Normal? Not normal? Who can say? I really enjoy spending time building museum quality wooden ship models (the current one is of the Constitution, after the Tripoli drydock rebuilds). It has taken 2 years so far, with maybe 2 to go (hand built all the way, and all knots are authentic!). Reading, keeping the home running, walking and training the dog, trying to train the kids (that is much harder), photography (love my Kodak Pro14n), programming, electronics of all kinds, community (president of Police Academy Alumni, member of Crime Prevention Council, director of Neighborhood Watch), mentor of FIRST (this one is highest on the list), and so forth. Normal? Who knows. As my dad once said, "Genius is borderline on madness. And you are borderline..."

Re: Hobbies, normal and unusual

For the most part, my biggest hobby is traveling and riding different roller coasters all throughout the country. I have, to date, ridden nearly 150 different roller coasters.

I have a soft spot for Disney theme parks, in particular, and love to spend as much time and money in them as I can manage. Often, I spend a lot more time (and thus, money) in them than I can manage.

I am immensely fascinated by the design and operation of airports and other public spaces like museums and parks.

I have several thousand dollars worth of N scale trains. Again, I am interested in developing efficient infrastructure for their operation, like above.

I draw.

I enjoy skiing.

I am involved in two quite different aspects of the hobby of model airplane flying.

1) I fly radio control airplanes, mostly non-competitively. I fly a few not-too-serious "fun fly" competitions which have local rules with such tasks as "bomb drop," (they don't explode), limbo, and spot landing.

2) I serve as a pit man/mechanic in control line combat contests at the world championship level. I was a member of the US team in 1984 and 1990, and have been a mechanic for fliers from New Zealand and Finland. This aspect of my hobby has taken me to various places around the world including Sweden, France, and China, and will take me to Spain in the summer of 2006.

I think my interest in the model airplane sport/hobby is what got me interested in FIRST. While model airplane competition is basically an individual or "team of two" sport and FIRST is a "team of many" sport, there is a lot of similarity, and excitement in both.

Science/Technology-That is my hobby. The question with me is always what books don't I have on a particular subject rather than what books do I have.

My favorite hobbies? Well, during the summer, it would have to be fishing, hands down. You can't beat surfcasting off Cape Cod for Bluefish and Stripers! Plus, while working at a bait shop over the summer, I have begun to learn how to build fishing rods. It's really quite an art!
During the Fall and Winter, I always enjoy getting out in the woods hunting. It's definately a break from the norm. And, I always look forward to volleyball season!
I also have also been very involved with Boy Scouts, but since college is a lot of work, I don't have as much time for that.

Besides that, ya gotta love those Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots! :)

My hobby is natural history-

Like KokoEd I am into herpetology and have been since I was 12.

I also worked for years in Cretaceous invertebrate paleontology and the culture of high altitude Andean orchids.

I have also been collecting fine mineral specimens for about 30 years and I am MSHA certified in mine safety. I work a claim with my buddies on weekends in the summer and we have a semi-professional organization that allows us access into quarries.

I also coach soccer with my kids teams and like to go on "expeditions" to distant wild places in the world and my camera is always around my neck.

I give lectures to various hobby clubs and groups to help support my hobbies.

I have a saintly tolerant wife.......

WC

Here is the cycle of my life........

1. During the summer, I become Bemis, Lord of the Band Geeks (my official title).

2. After that I get bored untill robotics season starts, so I play many many video games. I have a list of games that still remain unbeaten.......

3. After robotics ends, I go ride bikes and do other stuff when the weather is nice. This takes up the month or two before band starts again.

My little brother collects turtles, and every time the neighbor finds a snake, turtle or lizards my little bro is there in a flash.
