I thought you were dating some "robotics hottie" wetzel... anywho shouldn't you be worrying about your robot, not all the girls around anyway? maybe that's just me ... but if you do try and pick someone up, be friendly, but not serial killer friendly, don't try and touch the girl, don't pull the "can i take my picture with you" and if you make some dumb pick up line that involves the word robot then just tuck your tail and run, really 95% of cases you should just hit yourself and turn around before the girls boyfriend on the team walks up and pummels you, but hey maybe that's your style...

Team238-aholic 15-04-2002 12:17

Hmmm picking up girls...i'm assuming at the FIRST Competition...lol....well...from my experience of being a cute girl at the competitions...hahahaha (well at least I think I am)...one year the hotel we stayed at...another team (one from arizona that will remain nameless :) ) , was staying the floor above us, and our rooms had like balconys, and as soon as we arrived, the boys tried to pick up me and my friend Melissa...lol...they were just being cute, and asking what team we were from and stuff..."Can we trade pins" type of deal....

So if your looking to pick up girls...maybe go up to them, and ask them if they want to trade pins, and make small talk...hey, i know it worked for those boys...lol! Just be yourself...girls like that....yep....good plan....

Dave_222 15-04-2002 13:17

Hey what about... No never mind. Well maybee... No forget that too. Hey just forget I said anything. Because you know I really didnt say anything.

Pamela 15-04-2002 14:20

Don't use trading pins to pick up girls!!!! its bad realll bad, my team will laugh at you b/c it happens so often to girls on my team it's funny now! Offer the girl food... always catches my attention.... actually if I didn't know you I'd find it weird... hmmm.... I guess the best way is to make a comment about something to strike up a conversation then stop by and talk agian randomly during the day then when you're about to hit the parks ask if the girl has gone on a ride, if she says no, say you have to try it, you want to go with me? or if she says yes, say, wasn't it really cool? you want to ride it agian? groups equal good for going around parks so bring some friends along and have her bring friends along so its not weird b/c you don't really knwo eachother!

Um treat the girls with respect, that could help.
Also don't come up and be all touchy-feelie, that is the worst thing a guy could do...

drats! There goes plan A!
*throws rose onto ground, smashes it with foot*

Onto Plan B...
*runs around corner, sound of car door slamming, tires screech in the background*

I always try and act relaxed, and try to ease into the situation. Walk up to her, and act natural.

letting your hormones/emotions take control of your mouth/body isnt the way to go. I'm a guy (trust me;) ) So gals, correct me if Im wrong, but acting macho as well as too "touchie feelie" is definitly a negative. Coming straight outta nowhere, reciting love poetry may also be a little weird, but may that be a good thing, perhaps, if done properly (plz someone help me out w/ an answer here)

Try to become friends before anything else. That way, even if she does have a boyfriend, the relationship is'nt built on nothing, anf you still gain a friend in the end:D It's always nice to have friends, even if the romance does'nt come out the way you expected (darn, i just bought a golden retreiver and painted the whtie picket fence!)

just my 2 cents, correct me if im wrong though, (or say so if I'm right .

Of course, if its poetry you want...not a problem

Ok, guys. Speaking from what really annoys me...

What NOT to do:

 Don't do everything for us, we probably aren't on FIRST if we can't carry the control board or cut a wire

 Don't act macho, we don't care how "incredible" you think you are.

 Don't stereotype us girls. Most of us robotics girls, aren't the typical flakes (not insulting flakes!)

What to DO:

:) Be polite.

:) Offer to help, but don't insist if we refuse.

:) If you know us well enough (not first time meeting), talk about something we both enjoy.

Hope this helps!:D

A question for the ladies out there: Guys holding doors open for you: Good, bad, or indifferent? Is me being chivalrous a waste of time, or a good thing?

--Ben Mitchell

A. Snodgrass 16-04-2002 19:25

I always thought of it as a sign of respect but then again I have friends who find it offensive and belittling...simple answer: it depends totally on the girl. It never hurts to be kind though, guy or girl, and holding open a door for somebody is just common courtesy in my opinion. Now pulling out the chair for the lady...ive heard more debate over THAT then the door. And no Ben...its not a waste of time.
If you treat the lady with respect...you are doing just fine.
