Hairline Fractures
For those who chat with me online on a regualr basis, you know I have had serious issues with my right foot recently. I don't have a doctor's appointment til tomorrow, so in the meantime, I'd like to ask those who have been injured as such (athletic injuries, not sprains) share their stories. Particularly how you could tell it was a fracture.
I commend you for yoru bravery. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
I had a very small fracture of my left middle finger once, while playing basketball.
I didn't know it was fractured until they took multiple X-rays. It hurt like heck when it wasn't all taped up, that's for sure. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
I was rock climbing and fell about 10 feet-15 feet and landed between two rocks and then lost balance and fell over. I chipped my bone in my ankle, hyper extended the ligament, tore it half way through and then fractured my ankle an inch higher then where I chipped the bone. I knew It was hurt when i herd the POP sound, but I dint know how bad until I had to walk the long long distance back to the car on my ankle.
I hope u get better soon. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
I broke my arm on a trampoline in 2002. I knew it was broken when I heard the loud SNAP!

Re: Hairline Fractures
Wow, you guys are in some major pain. Mine is more of an ongoing pain, and has major bruising and a major limp attached to it. Now, I could pull a Wetzel (with all due respect) and be on crutches, or I could hope nothing is wrong and it'll go away. I'm just very concerned that it will stay that way and cause problems, especially with the amount of walking I'll have to do in ATL. It gets worse the more stress I put on it, so I've been steering clear of heavy work.

Re: Hairline Fractures
When I was much younger I was playing catch with a few buddies on the street. I tripped over the curb and hurt my foot. Against my wishes my buddies dad took me to the hospital. Broken foot. They applied a big cast to almost my knee and sent me home. Problem was I had a first date that night with a girl I really liked. I sent my dad to pick her up and then he drove me to the concert. After we walked down Yonge street and I nearly froze my toes off. Had to call dad again to pick us up. Slightly embarrassing but well worth it.
BTW she did go out with me again, without my dad. Take care of it now cause I still feel all of my old aches at my advanced age. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
I fractured my thumb (actually, one of my friends fractured my thumb, I still occasionaly give him a hard time about it) at the senior all night party two years ago. I didn't notice anything was wrong until I went to zip up my backpack about four hours later and I couldn't use my thumb. And then the next day it was hugely swollen, but I didn't have time to go to the doctor for two days after that. I couldn't move it at all, but it didn't really hurt except for when I applied force. It took forever to be able to shuffle cards again though.

Re: Hairline Fractures
I have had two hairline fractures on my right wrist on separate occasions, both from snowboarding, for some reason I don't think that I should snowboard anymore.

Re: Hairline Fractures
Not sports related, but I broke my left arm when I was in kindergarten. I was at the playground down the street from my house when I thought it was be smart to go down the slide head first. Well, for one reason or another (I can't really remember) I got about half way down the slide and then i "rolled" off the edge and landed on my stomach with my left arm underneath me. I do remember hearing a snapping noise and then realizing that I couldn't feel or move my left arm at all from it's position resting across my body. I managed to get back home and off to the hospital I went. I dont really remember anything about the hospital visit but I was in a cast for awhile with my arm in the same position as it had been when I landed on it. Due to multiple breaks my arm never did regain it's full length after it healed. To this day I still can not touch my shoulder with my left arm (it's about an inch off). I guess the only downside is when I played "Simon Says" because I could never touch my shoulder.

Re: Hairline Fractures
In my younger years, while swinging on a swing; I was being stupid...
I was trying to jump off the swing and I had released my hands from the chains, in preparation for the jump. Once the swing was at the peak of its back swing, I immediately fell face first into the ground. While skydiving to the ground probably 6+ feet to the ground, I immediately put my hands at full extension to prevent my face from becoming injured and in return I got injured wrists. Lucky or not so luckily, my chin barely hit the ground and I got up in the worst pain I have ever felt. I knew something was broken or severely sprained. After wards I went in the house barely able to open the door knob, plopped on the couch, and hardly moved an inch because of the pain. One single movement of both of my hands added a sharp pain to the corresponding hand and of course this pain added onto the pain without the movement. So, I sat around the house for a while in severe pain, when my mom saw me she could tell something was not right. So I told her what I had done and she eventually took me to the ER. (I am not a person that complains much, and it took my days to go the the hospital after one previous foot injury) To end the story short after waiting in the Emergency Room for many many painful hours, I finally got in the X-Ray room and ended up getting a cast on one arm and a wrist brace on the other. They were both broken (ouch). :ahh: Moral of the story: (1) Don't jump off swings. (2) The worst pain you probably ever have in a limb/limb's or other extremity's probably means it is broken... --------- My Other Broken Bone This broken bone is more like your injuries. Once while playing four-square, with boots on, don't ask why because I do not know; I landed toes first on my right foot. It hurt, but not all that bad. Eventually after four days in pain, I finally said to my mom that I need to get my foot checked out. I found out after those four days that two of my toes were fractured. The hospital ended up giving me a toe/foot boot to wear around for several weeks or so. How did I know something was broken? Waiting four days in pain to realize that it was not a sprain or something that was not going to heal on its own. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
Seriously, I instantly thought of this once I read 'hairline' fractures.
I have been lucky enough to never break anything, but my brother had one in his wrist when he was tackled by a huge kid while playing little league baseball. Sigh. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
One day I got the brilliant idea to ride a scooter down a wet driveway. Well, it slipped and the handlebars went into my ribs. I was only a little bruised, or so I thought. A few days the small bruise type pain was still there, but the bruising was gone. Also, now every time I took a deep breath, it hurt a lot. So I went to the doctor. They took an X ray but said everthing was fine and the pain should go away in a few days. Well, a few days came and went. Then it really started hurting to take any sort of deep breath whatsoever. So then like two weeks after I went to the doctor I get a letter in the mail saying they reviewed the X-rays again and I have a cracked rib (hariline fracture). No wonder I couldn't take deep breaths without hurting myself. There was nothing to do to fix it except relax and wait. So, I couldn't participate in PE for like 3 weeks and I got an F on my report card, the only one ever. But I brought it back up to an A by writing five 2 page reports on different sports. :)

Re: Hairline Fractures
Fractures:
Left wrist: roller-skating in jr. high Right hand: football in 9th grade Left hand: football in 11th grade Right thumb: wrestling in 11th grade, same day that the cast from "left hand" came off - doc hit me over the head with clipboard for this one Muscle tear: Right pectoral: 80% tear, lifting weights, about 10 years ago. It sounded like a burlap bag ripping. Ouch. This was the final move that made me switch from jockdom to geekdom. AB |

By their nature, hairline fractures are really hard to dx. Unless you get the right xrays, it is easy to miss. This is really the only way to say one way or another about a hairline fracture. As for my toe, nothing broke. I've never broken any bone at anytime, but this is my first dislocation. I'm going to link to a picture, but be warned: You can see the middle phalange of toe III sticking out of the skin. It was interesting, the ortho docs had to talk for a minute to figure out the name of the joint, because it is apparently an oddball one. The distal interphalangeal joint on phalange III, DIP-III. Dislocated toe. Blood and bone. Of course, Brandon may remove it. I guess spell check dosn't like those words cause it gave me an error. Wetzel |
Re: Hairline Fractures
In the operator's manual that came with my body...Sec.1, par.1. "If it hurts, it is your body telling you not to do it anymore!"
Do what the Doc says... |
Re: Hairline Fractures
Well... Right now my back is fractered. It is called spondylolysis of the 5th Lumbar [if you want to get technical]. It is actually what got me involved in robotics. In January I was having back pain in track - thought it was a pulled muscle [might have been] So, I pole-vaulted at a meet, but one of my attempts a landed on the bar. It hurt pretty bad but I ignored it and went again... qualified sectionals and made the height [6'] in trying for 6'6 I did not make the height and laned on the bar a second time. I was done. I didnt think anything of the pain. I laid down on the floor because I was tired and resting before the 4x400. I tried to sit up.. and the worst pain went through my back. I started crying right away, and for the rest of the time it hurt so bad, I sobbed the rest of the meet and the bus ride home. [I also love running so I was upset that the one thing I had in my life was torn away from me] So I went to the docs etc.. said it was fractured. Gave it some time to heal, went to one physical therapy appointment.. and then had to go to the docs. They did nuclear imaging... and its not healing. :( So.. now after nationals I have a ton of lovely appointments.. like an MRI and a few visits to the orthopedic.... But I am not too upset because I dont think I would have known about FIRST if this didnt happen. Everything happens for a reason. I just wish it would get better now :( .

Re: Hairline Fractures
Fainted once and as I went down my pinkie toe got caught underneath the door I was standing next to! Ouch! Broke it.
Jammed my pinkie finger back in November and it still hurts -probably broke it, now I probably have arthritis in it. Get your crutches and bring them to Atlanta - you can meet my daughter who will be on hers there and she can tell you about all the weird orthopedic things she's had going on... |
Re: Hairline Fractures
fell once when i was really little and jammed a rock through my upper lip. it tore a little hole just above my lip. looked way worse than it was.
sprained my wrist really bad doing a tailwhip on my bmx bike. went to the hospital and waited in the emergency room for about 8 hours before we decided to just leave. dont get me wrong, i got an x-ray, but the radiologist said it didnt look bad enough to stay. still not sure what happened internally. one of the doctors said it was probably internal swelling. luckily thats all that has happened to me really. i bmx, some snowboarding, motocross, and i used to skateboard. i just love to dodge bullets. :D |
Re: Hairline Fractures
yeah, i haven't broken or fractured or had any bone out of place at all in my life (except teeth but they don't count) but I've had my share of injuries, like a Bottle Rocket up my...yeah shorts. Funny story i think i have the thing on video.
However the worst bone related injury I've had were some really bad reoccurring shin splints (as a matter of fact i have them now) Its not the biggest problem in the world but i guess you can compare it to arthritis in teenagers, at some points when i've had it i've needed to take a break from cross country or even drop out of a race, there were a couple times I had to get a golf cart when i'm out on the course because of it. But its not the most deabilitating condition and i'll grow out of it, quite literally. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
Well, some good news if it ends up being a fracture, it heals a whole lot faster and a lot less painful then a sprain or strain.
I've never broken a bone, but knowing this fact I wish I had given my list of injuries! (I just had my 3rd knee surgery and I'm only 21 years old!) If you need any cheering on to get better, or just want a story or two about how someone else got hurt so you don't feel so bad, let me know! I'm the queen of being sick and injured :( |
Re: Hairline Fractures
broke finger because brother threw log onto it when i was really young. broke my fibula and my growth plate in my ankle during a football practice. also dislocated my hip 13 degrees and i now have a pin in my hip. i am not allowed to play any contact sports for awhile. i asked the Doctor if i could play rugby last year and he thought i was crazy, he just sat there and stared at me for a few minutes then said what's wrong with the youth today?

Re: Hairline Fractures
Heh..
I've got ya' all beat... I've broken my right big toe (Don't rember which bone) while playing - Volleyball!! Walked w/ a limp for about 2-3 months - and than good as new! :D |
Re: Hairline Fractures
Good news Y'all!
I am not part broken, but the bone/foot is so bruisified that I will be limping like mad but I do have an ace bandage. Since crutches would make scouting impossible, I'm glad I don't have em. Nothing comes between me and scouting. |
Re: Hairline Fractures
Feel better, Genia!
I've never broken any limbs....but I have broken my front tooth. I was pushed (accidentally, but still pushed) into a metal door frame while running into a girl's bathroom in 4th Grade at a Girl Scout meeting. My front tooth broke diagonally, and I followed what the old PSAs that told you to put your broken part of your tooth in milk while bringing it to the dentist. Long story short, after a root canal, temporary material in the shape of a tooth, temporary caps, and some interesting class pictures, I now have a permanent cap on (my right) front tooth. It's a slight different shade than the rest of them, but that's from all the coffee I drink. |

Re: Hairline Fractures
i Had a random hairline fracture on my left leg once.
other than that, i broke my right leg in 2 places and my right arm (if ur going to championships, you can see the scar where the bone stuck out :yikes: :yikes: ) while riding my bike down Blue Ridge. Messed up L1 and L2 on my spine at a wrestling tournament. The guy picked me straight up, lost his balance and ended up dropping my back on his knee. Also broke my sternum wrestling. got a hairline fracture on my skull after a car accident. and finally, i broke 2 ribs playing football. dove for the ball, didn't see the pole, and BAM. yup, besides all that, i think I'm a healthy kid |
