ScoutPro: Team 612's Scouting Application at Atlanta

Over the past month the Programming Team for 612 has produced a very in depth scouting program for scouting teams to use at nationals. We have put it together in an CD package for us to distribute to you or you to pick up from us.

This application contains everything your scouting team could possibly want to do with scouting. And the best part is that it is easy to use and affordable: Free!

Some features of the program include:
-Team Creation: Do you have information on teams that you want to store for next year to scout and view, well we have made interfaces where you can detail the design of the drive system, the arm, the autonomous mode, and about 8 other different areas of detail that are important about the robot.
-We know that some teams out there are Top Teams, and with the responsibility of being a Top Team you need to know how to manage your alliance selections. We considered this factor by making a whole section of the application dedicated to the describition of your alliance possibilities. Is team xxxx a Top Team, an average team, a weak team? How to they hellp you, how do you help them out. You can describe all of this in the alliance Organizer, and once you have stored it, you can view it on later to advise your team of possible selections.
-For those scouting teams that aren't so much interested in the details of each teams robot, but rather the match scouting to see how they rank. Our easy interface allows you create a match and classify it as one of 5 types including practice, ellimination, quarter-finals, etc. you can include notes on each alliance, notes on the match in general, and even mark if you are on one of the alliances. Since it can get quite hectic at FIRST we have a match scheduler which allows you to input the time of the match, and each time you use our application it lets you kow when each match is about to occur so you can prepare yourself.
-One of the primary purposes for scouting is to observe the strategies of other teams. One part of the application dedicates itself to this function. Once you see a strategy you like, name it whatever you want (i.e 612's amazing autonomous mode, or Team 333's good tic tac toe method), then describe that strategy below so that you don't have to rely purely on your memory to articulate this to your drivers and coaches later on.
-Lastly one of the most important features we have added is our own method of ranking the teams. We all know that win/loss record is not evident of how good a team truly is. If you have match scouts they can input the data of each team in the matches they partake in and our program will output a ranking of all of your teams in the database, so that you know who is truly the best.

We will post pictures of the application and the cd package tomorrow so that you can get a sneak peak of what is to come. Sorry for this, but we would like to come and meet you at Atlanta by giving you the CD package to install on your computer so that you can see how ScoutPro will help out your team.

Thanks for taking the time to learn about ScoutPro presented by Team 612 and we hope to give you a copy at Atlanta. If you choose to use ScoutPro in Atlanta, we hope you like it.

Thanks,
Team 612 Programming team.

this sounds like a really cool program. I know that you would like to meet the teams using it but i think it would be a good idea to let it be a download so teams can familiarize them selfs with it before Atlanta. this would also give you a chance to get it more widespread.

Is it going to be OpenSource? If so, what license? <insert blurb about how OpenSource projects are so much better> :D

I'll try to stop by the pit to pick it up, but if it doesn't work out, could you put it up on your website? I look foward to seeing this, Thanks!

To address a few of the questions about the program:
-We are not making it open source, sorry.
-We are not able to have you download it online due to the file size, it's over 300 mb large. We do not have enough server space to host this.

As I have promised I got a few screen shots for you to see what it will look like. Also to clarify how you can get the CD, you can either come and find us at 612 and we will also be going around to other teams to ask them if they would like it and pass them out.

Here are the links for the screen shots:

300MB??

Why is it so huge? Isn't it just a database with a fancy IO?

Re: ScoutPro: Team 612's Scouting Application at Atlanta

The size on the CD is 300 mb, the actual size of all the code is and database included is 2.9 mb with the bulk of it being the database size. That is all the stuff I had coded. The installation package and all that good stuff so that it will auto install on your computer and the install settings and whatever ravi and suchit (the other two programmers) made is what brought it up to over 300 mb as they told me.

Since at this present time (doesn't mean forever) we do not want to release the source, the only way you can get it is through the 300 mb installation dowloaded of which you would have to contact us through the email above, or when we are at atlanta and can pass it out.

If ScoutPro is successful and popular we will definately put the source online so that anyteam can get it, especially the teams that are not going to nationals.

We look forward to seeing you there, and if you have any questions, just email ScoutPro@gmail.com

Thanks again.

Wow that looks like a pretty good scouting program, we also have a fairly good scouring program, just curious what type of database is being used?

I was wondering if this would work on Apple's as well as PC.

Wow, looks like a lot of capabilities. If one were to pick up a copy, where would be the best place to do so, from your pit, from your team in the stands, or elsewhere? Also, I didn't notice this addressed any where, but will it be able to support pictures of teams robots?

ScoutPro CD's will be distributed through Team 612's Programming Team. We will try to cover as many teams as possible. If you are interested in ensuring a copy of this valuable resource for your team, email your name and your team number/name to ScoutPro@gmail.com.

An access database is used to store all the data in the current version of ScoutPro, there have been experiments with other kinds (MySQL..most notably) but we decided to go with access.

Apple computers will be supported as long as they have a Java Virtual Machine installed. I know OS X already has java runtime environment as a part of its preloaded package (don't ask me about the other versions of it since I can't remember). Overall, ScoutPro is currently able to support perfectly for Windows, Linux, and Apple. If JRE's are already installed, one can install ScoutPro for the following OS's :
  1. Microsoft Windows
  2. Sun Solaris SPARC
  3. Sun Solaris
  4. Linux
  5. HP-UX RISC I18N for HP-UX 10.20 for HP-UX 11
  6. AIX I18N
  7. Apple Mac's
  8. There are a few other ones that I won't note here

Now, for the picture/video storage capability, previous versions of ScoutPro (that haven't been officially released to the public) have had this support and we found that this feature was more trouble (especially video's) to get working for Java because it requires a few exterior installations for JRE that is installed by the installer. Future versions of ScoutPro can, and probably will, have this capability restored into the interface.

Hope I answered all of the questions that have been placed up to this point. We will see you all at nationals :)

Ravi
