Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
I automatically volunteer myself and my team to attend this off-season event. I am pretty sure it is alright with the rest of the team, only if we can get more pink people to go; which is not very difficult to do (especially during the summer). Plus it is fairly local. :D

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
now I have to choose between this and IRI? Come on! ::wonders how I can swing going to both::
|
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Wow thats great to hear they finally got that up and running I remember we were talking about that last year and I'm glad that The Museum brought it all together.
Count Me in to help out and hopefully I can rally the rest of the Florida FIRST guys to come out and help. Who can we contact to let us know how we can help. Dan |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Have you guys established hotel plans with any of the local-area hotels for this event? Often times some motels/hotels will offer a special rate towards teams. I think if we found out about the hotel situation teams could better plan and assess whether or not we can attend.

i missed the bots @ the museum last year cause i was on a plane to chicago..this year i should be home then... can't wait to have fun w/ my favorite florida teams and ppl... |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
BTW, if anyone can remember some of the old fun challenges we used to do at Mayhem In Miami, please send me a PM or IM. I'm trying to think of all of them. So far I've got:
"You think you can do it better???" for the mentors "All girl drive team" "Capture the hill" - not so useful for this year's game, but maybe I can modify it a tad... |

Well the one Good thing about Ft. Lauderdale is there is quite a pluthera of Hotels, and this museum is about a 7-10 minute drive to the beach and all the resorts there. It could be quite a vacation for some people :-) I'm excited to see a competition in my home town.

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Wow this is so incredibly awesome. I remember last summer one of the coordinators of the robot demo there wanted to do an event. Even better its two days before my bday! Pete, us alums are driving some of these matches.....with hopefully an improved 710 bot...

1604 does not look like we will be showing up, but I'll just put in a little rumor that I am pushing 1390 to attend... we are working on the logistic and discussing our funds. I'll make them more aware of the June 15th deadline. Arefin, I'll let you know as soon as I find out what the mentors decide.

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
warning: excitement spoiler!
Someone posted this on the S.P.A.M. Forums. http://www.spamrobotics.com/forums/i...opic=213&st=30 That last post in that thread mentions Tropical Storm Dennis. It is somewhat headed towards Ft. Lauderdale and one of our team members plans to cancel because of it. Will anything be cancelled, such as the event on the beach? |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
As of right now, no. But I would like to discuss it with the committee members. I will post back here at night letting you know if everything is still the way it has been planned.
|
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Note that the link posted on their forums is 120 hours, much after the event is over.
|
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Alright here is the update, Doesn't look like that the storm will get here before Sunday night. Yes, we may have rain but we are inside the museum, under the roof. The Mayhem is on.
... Now that I am thinking, the teams at the Mayhem will show off exactly how the Florida teams play, Through storms, with all the energy and spirt. :) |

Heck Yesss!!! Arefin said it go Florida FIRST, so proud to see this happening hopefully Dennis will not mess things up but if he does were ready for everything. -Drew :) |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
i don't think this storm will hurt us...what's a little drops of rain??? it's just rain we aren't going to melt ya know...
the party is still rocking on down in south florida so tis all good :) |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
That tropical storm warning line is a little close. I think I'll bring something to cover our robot, in case we have to carry it in the rain. lol Is the drop off area covered? Also, if the beach party has to be canceled, is there an indoor, backup location?

Mayhem begins today in 4 hours. I hope we won't be under any hurricane watch. I just checked the hurricane Dennis's path, doesn't look like it is going to hit us. The most we might get is some rain. Fellow Cders, Please pray that the hurricane Dennis won't get here, so we can run this offseason smoothly. Thank you. Time to head out...

Congratulations Arefin on your dream come true

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Great off season event! Props to Arefin for getting it off the ground today, even though the weather (hurricane) was threatening it. Great job Arefin!
Thanks to 233 for the pick and 1083 for trying to hold on in the final round while our arm got locked and Pink's gear switcher broke. Also thanks to 108 SigmaC@T for their backup battery so that we could play in the final rounds. Much appreciated all! :D Congrats to 1523 (M.A.R.S.), 1251 (Techtigers), and 1390 (Weletthedogsout) on their win! Maybe our alliances might have a rematch sometime... |

so s.p.a.m. had fun and myself and my team give big congrats to the winners and all the teams. we had all new drivers and operators handling the bot so it wasn't the usual s.p.a.m. team but it was all good. we had a lot of fun, cheering, dancing and well yeah...
great job again to the crew! |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Well, I'll add to Tiff's post. I know most, if not all, drivers and operators were either first time driving, first time driving that robot, or just do not have much experience. The most important part is that we had fun. I know I did. I got to operate S.P.A.M.'s beast for several matches. I even managed to stack a few. I am very suprised I could do any of that because I am partially blind and I could barely see the goals.
Good job all teams and thanks to everyone for making it fun. This was the most fun FIRST-related event ever for me because I got to drive the bot so much and we weren't under so much presure to win. |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Thanks to everyone who helped for making such an event possible. I had a very good time and it was great to experience some more FIRST. Thanks to 1523 and 1390 for a great alliance.

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Well, I am very upset that i missed this event. I was suppose to be off the cruise ship by 10 am and i was going to head over there. But, do to the hurricane the port was closed for awhile and i didn't get off the boat till about 130 pm. Congrats Arefin and all the hard work you did. You did something that me and Dan tried about 2 years ago, but you actually succeed and i tip my hat to you.

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
::Gets on Stage::
Mayhem @ the Museum, a dream that became reality, an off-season competition that took place on July 8th and 9th at the Museum of Discovery and Science, downtown Ft. Lauderdale. First of all, I would like to thank all the sponsors, Skanska, Museum of Discovery and Science, Broward County Public Schools, and South Florida FIRST. Thank you to all the teams who came down and joined us at the Mayhem. Team 108 – SigmaC@T Team 179 – Swampthing Team 180 – S.P.A.M. Team 233 – Pink Team 710 – Paw Team 1029 – Wolvcats Team 1251 – TechTigers Team 1341 – Knights who say NEE Team 1345 – Platinum Dragons Team 1390 – Weletthedogsout Team 1523 – M.A.R.S. Team 1592 – Bionic Tigers It was really a Mayhem. Friday we set up the field while teams were showing off their true spirit of FIRST. Once we had the field ready (around 12 p.m.) we started practice matches. Caught a lot of attention from public, they were very interested in FIRST. We also had a lot of local TV channels; newspapers come in and interview teams as well as mentors from FIRST. Then it was the social where (I assume) the teams had a good time. We had BBQ. Friday night few of us stayed at the Museum (since it was an open space) with the field. 4 a.m. Saturday morning, it started raining very badly with a lot of wind (Broward was smashed with the ban from Hurricane Dennis). The field carpet was wet (3/4 of it). Everything was flying around. About 6 in the morning, the storm calm down. We had few shop vacuums. The committee was probably up for calling this off. But I didn’t want to say “I quit.” Volunteers joined me to start cleaning up the field. We had the carpet dried by 9 a.m. We waited till 12 p.m. since we were supposed to get another ban from Hurricane Dennis. At 12 we put the field back together. We started at 1. The competition included 20 qualifying matches, Elimination round, Human triple play, Autonomous competition, Mentors obstacle course driving. It was fun. It was amazing to see how the crew pulled it off. The name of the competition totally merges with the way it went. I hope the teams enjoyed it. I would like to thank a few here. I would like thank John Burke (magnet coordinator), who was up for all these work, David Ellich (1251 mentor), for being there all the time and help planning everything out, Rosemary Petrill (1251 mentor), for taking care of all the judging criteria. Comes down to College students… Andrew Rudolph, yup he did it again, he made 17 trophies, and they look very professional. Mike Walker, who came down from Orlando and took care of the field and scoring. Dan Richardson, who did DJ for both days, he kept it going. Thanks to Steve Shade, Anne Bergeron, Bill Brown, Peter Smeryage, James Martz, Abraham D. for being referees at the Mayhem. Thanks to the 1251 crew (Drew, Kevin, Sebs, Dave) for being there and helping me all the time, without you guys it would have been so hard to pull this off. Thanks to Tytus Gerrish, Tiffany Lee, Amanda Makintosh, Barry bonzack for staying with me and support me with whatever I needed help with. Thanks to Jaine perotti for coming up with that nice logo for the Mayhem. The shirt looked Awesome. I would also like to thank Dan Richardson and Ryan Albright who tried to do the same thing 2 years ago. I was inspired by them and I told them that I would make it happen. Sorry that it too me 2 years but I pulled it off. And ofcourse I would like to thank FIRST because if there was no FIRST, I wouldn’t be the Arefin that I am now. Ok… I am done. =) ::steps off the stage:: |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
To everyone who was involved with Mayhem @ the Museum --
I want to congratulate you all for doing such a fantastic job organizing and pulling off this event. Starting and running an offseason, especially for the first time, must be an incredible challenge. It sounds like everything went smoothly for the most part, even with the threat of Hurricane Dennis. I am glad that everyone remained safe, and that Mayhem did not have to be canceled. Thank you to everyone who pitched in. To Arefin especially -- I must say that I admire you for your strength of will and your determination. Running this offseason put you through way too much stress, and I am glad that it is over for the sake of your health. However, reaching for one's dreams is what makes people happy - without anything to struggle for, people would never gain the satisfaction of surmounting a challenge. It makes me so happy to see your dream come true, after all of the sleepless nights you had to endure, and the seemingly endless volumes of work that you had to do. Not everyone can deal with the large amounts of stress that you had to bear - let alone have it go as smoothly as it did. You are one incredibly strong person, and I congratulate you for your perseverance. Thank you to everyone who helped this young man's dream come true. I appreciate and value you all. FIRST has the power to change lives, inspire, and make dreams come true - as is evidenced by the outcome of this offseason event. -- Jaine |
Mayhem and Thanks

I could not be more impressed with a human being like Arefin on Saturday morning as I watched him on the field with a vacuum trying everything he can to get it dry, refusing to give up. I have no clue the stress it takes to get something like this organized, then to have the dream threatened by an unforeseeable act of God the night before after months of planning and consecutive sleepless days. That in itself was enough motivation for me to keep helping. Arefin- Mission successfully complete, returning to homebase for a nap. Thanks to everyone to help make this event possible, what an awesome event it turned out to be! ::Switches to 1390 hat:: I would like to represent 1390 in thanking Mars and Tech Tigers for an awesome alliance and our first championship win. Heck, it was the first time we have gotten an award...or even first time to move on from qualifying rounds to the finals. I am thrilled we have something to return home with, show our administration, and display in the front office of the school. Watching 1251, 1523, and 1390 ending the day with three triple plays is one memory that will stick for a long time, lets remember each other when alliance picking comes around at UCF 2006 ;) I truly believe this will help improve the team, it could not have been possible without these two teams. Thanks. |
Re: Mayhem and Thanks
Thank you first off to Mr.Arefin Bari and John Burke for coordinaing this event. Thanks to all the sponsors who made a dream a reality you have done your jobs with that. The whole setup and tear down crew thanks for your patience and great willingness to help out. To the night crew u guys rocked we need to do that again sometime lol.To all our volunteers who helped out, excellent work keeping things neat and organized you guys are the best. The refs were wonderful thank you for comming and bearing with us as we were preparing the field still on Saturday morning. The teams that came thank you so much I hope you all had a great time despite the weather and changes of schedule. Thank you M.A.R.S for selecting 1251 The TECH TIGERS and thanks weletthedogsout for being a great allience partner as well. Everyone who had anything to do with the event that you so much for support and help.

Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Does anyone have a list of the scores from each match? If so, I oculd use them so if they could be PMed to me or something, or posted here publicly. Thanks. Otherwise, odn't worry about it.
|
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
This competition was great. A good dose of fun, excitement, and weather. On behalf of my team, I would like to thank Arefin, Mr. Burke, and all of the volunteers that made this event possible. This is the best way to end a robotics season, worry-free of school, having a great time playing the best FIRST game (since I have been in robotics at least) ever.
I am all ready for next year already. How many more days until we get the 2006 game?  :ahh: Too many |
Re: Florida Off-season, Mayhem @ The Museum
Great job mr. burke, arefin and crew competition went of well even with the rain and delays.
Mad props to andrew with his awesome trophies Kudos to Mike T. Walker for getting the scoring system and competition field working ( I believe thats the first time a florida competition actually got the stuff to work lol ) "Mad Love " for my team who wasn't there but apparently helped out in the final round, confusing but amasing none the less. woohoo go 1083 EmotiCons Ohh and gotta give it up for that hot dj crew, they should like dj every FIRST competition in Florida after amasing performance. And lastly thanks to Tytus for stealing all my jokes and thinking he's funny and being like " Ohh I'm tytus and this is my joke " hehe :-) Great Job to everyone, it takes a ton of people to have a great competition and think teams did a great job maintaining a high energy and exciting atmosphere, even in just missing a hurricane. I'd love to see the other off season competitions stack tetras with 35 mph gusts of wind. :-) heh |

It seems that many of the people I wanted to thank have already been thanked... it was amazing how many people got together in the end. I do want to send a double-thanks out to two teams in particular, Teams 1251 and 1029. Especially with all of the putting up and taking down of the fields, no way we could've gotten it done without your help. I was amazed how many students and mentors both teams had over there whenever we worked on something. Thanks a bunch guys!
