The long stretch between seasons.....
What do you guys do to keep busy over the "offseason". I find myself drawing up new ideas for what would have been cool in the last year's game. I also watch some soap vid's and do some team related stuff. Am I the only one?

In no order of importance
Just ya know... some things off the top of my head. |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
we're doing fundraisers planning for next year, and compiling some good video clips onto one dvd to archive the year. We'll have to find some more things, though (which I know won't be hard) 'cause its a looong time until January!

Wow, thats mostly what I plan to do, I guess great minds think alike. |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Well I am going to take a few months off to travel after graduation, then in the summer my team and I are mentoring a small robotics summer camp. Then do some more traveling. Then when grade school starts up again I will help out in training new members and do some research and development to introduce new concepts to the team. Last year we R&D arm systems and programming. This year we will R&D drive systems and manufacturing. The R&D will take us pretty much through January in which the whole process starts over.

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
The best thing you can do in terms of robot is to get every member of your team to learn inventor. And not just the tutorials. I would do a summer Inventor project of building a new robot to play Triple Play now that you actually know how it is played. I'm talking every detail. Also, you should make inventor models of different chassis, transmission, and arm ideas that you might be able to use no matter what the game is. Even if you end up not using them, the expertise you gain puts you far ahead.
This year, we would not have been able to do a 6 motor 2 speed transmission if we had not started thinking about it and drawing it up in the pre-season. |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Gaaah, the list of things my team wants to get done before next year is overwhelming and relieving at the same time...I won't have to wait until next season to be around it, but I'm afraid my mom might take away my computer and lock me in my room so I'll go to sleep and stop thinking about robotics for a while...
(I'd probably come up with something robotics-related to occupy the time...) |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
During the 8 months in between the end of this season and the next, i plan to get more sleep. Other then that, we have a lot of fundraising that needs to be done which can be a pain in the butt. During the summer, im hoping we attend the IRI but nothing is set in stone yet. Also after summer is over i want to start a rough outline of a scouting plan. I wanted to do one this year but didnt have enough time.

1. Catch up with schoolwork >.< 2. Off Season Competitions 3. Teach team members all my old jobs 4. Organize VEX League competition 5. Call up my new college about FIRST |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
.. SLEEP.. WORK (yay i acually have TIME for a job wihtout robotics), :P, catch up on school.. < no matter how hard you try, robotics will affect your first term marks. . eek... i personally am making a team DVD with ALL the pictures and videos, then burning 50 copies to give out to each member.. eek... its 3gb wihtout the championship stuff.. eek..
our team plans on starting a few FLL teams and maybe a Vex team, do a bunch of fundraising a head of time.. . and .. having fun.. we plan a big celebration dealy.. |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
acually our team is planning on building a R2D2 for local rotary club :d

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Get ready for the BEST robotics competition in the fall :) It is a smaller scale event compared to FIRST but it is a great way to get new students experience in robotic competitions.

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Lets see:
1. Fudraising 2. Helping Lego Teams 3. OCCRA!!!!! YAY!!! More robot building!!!! :D There's more, but I can't think of them at the time |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
hmmm SLEEP!!
i plan on doing that after the IB exams...lol also actually hanging w/ my friends...wow i can have sorta a life besides just school work.. most of those things mentioned on the list i will be doing too....and working on things for the Southern Florida Chapter of the RCU i'll be keeping myself busy that's for sure.... |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
I also wouldn't mind catching up on my sleep. No more late night scouting work, or late night driver panic attacks

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Offseason? Yes... unfortunately there is. My team is definately not overwhelmed. We do have several projects lined up. Some fundraising. Carwash, Bridies for Charity, Adopt-A-Highway, Learning programming using Robovation robot, Making a totally new game and seperating team into 2 groups and use Robovation bots to totally design and program 2 robots to compete in said game. Unfortunately my team does not want to start new teams. I do, on the other hand, want to start a couple of Vex teams. We are also helping out the local FLL teams that we did not know were he in the QCA. We formed a Quad Cities FIRST Alliance w/ FLL teams. Form new FLL teams. I would like to get a new FRC team in Dubuque, IA. Planned on having a class using Robovation (my idea) but realized it was unrealistic at this point (not my idea of course). Recruit new schools and students. New sponsors. Get existing sponsors to stay.
Personal goals; Graduate, enroll in local community college, go to IRI (?), purchase Vex kit, start Vex team, get more schools involved in FIRST (especially Moline), catch up on sleep, fix laptop (again), teach 3DSMax to rookies, I'll think of more. |
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Long..... Stretch.... I'm already feeling slight effects (urges to build crazy tetra grabbers). However, the main drive traing uy on our team is leading a group over the summer to build a prototype drive base. This will allow the many freshman (i am one) to learn the design phase of building a drive base, as well as the actual practicality of certain stages of the process. As well as preperation/learning for next year, our team is going to do far too many demos for all of our sponsors, and the local junior high schools that feed into our high school.

Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
Hmm, in order of preference: Sleep, play tennis, go outdoors (woo!), fundraise fundraise fundraise, do homework, re-organize tiny pieces of hardware in robotics room...
|
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
i do anything of whatever we are doing in robotics. and other than robotics i will keep myself occupied with sports and gymnastics
|
Re: The long stretch between seasons.....
As our Mentor/Teacher David Fava would say. "There is no offseason in FIRST. We have already finished the 05 season, now we start the 06 season."
