[OCCRA]: 2005 OCCRA Game

So, I know there is always speculation on what the game is going to be for FIRST next year. This had me thinking, what are other peoples ideas or speculations for OCCRA's game next year?

Well I hope it is nothing like last years game.

Last year's game was great! I hope OCCRA (and FIRST) stays away from balls and continues with the odd objects. However, I hope they make something that requires more engineering than a stick, like tubies and tetras (whose names I got mixed up for about the first 3 weeks of FIRST  ). Maybe something solid?

Re: [OCCRA]: 2005 OCCRA Game

I agree with both of you guys. I hated last years game. It wasn't all to exciting, but I loved it that they strayed away from balls. Something solid would be a good idea, depending on what the object is, it could inspire teams to strive to have creative and interesting designs.

I say we have something like Stack Attack. That would be straying away from balls tetras and tubies.

Anyone else have ideas?

I do hope that the game creators see this thread and come up with a game that has playing pieces that are solid, kinda like plastics bins or something like that.

What about big wooden blocks that spell out "OCCRA". The robot would have to get them and take them them back to the home row and spell "OCCRA" out. That's all I can think of at the moment.....

Re: [OCCRA]: 2005 OCCRA Game

The game should allow for creative strategy in the actual use of the objects themselves. This year's FIRST game was one of the most boring to watch: robot pick up tetra, robot put tetra on goal. Repeat steps one and two for two minutes. All you could do with the tetra was put it on top of a goal or underneath- sure, where you put it mattered, but rarely did the audience se something amazing (Here I'll put in my good word for 67's awesome drive system). In short it got boring. Personally the tubie game was interesting because there were plenty of variations on how to use the tubies, such as the methods of collecting, grabbing, and scoring- placement in a hole or on tope of a revolving arrow.

Another critical element of the game is to have reasonably sized game pieces. The size of the tetras was plain ridiculous: the hazard posed by the games reached new heights in this year. I can deal with a playground ball to my head. 9 pounds of PVC is absolutely outrageous in the manner FIRST used it. To summarize before I go off on a tangent on the lack of safety this year, game pieces must be manageable and kept as far away from the humans as possible.

However, I would like the occasional use of balls: these items are economical ($~10 for a 13", as compared to just $15 for tetra connectors alone) and easy to find. They are also ready-made items that require no assembly. Personally, an item I would like to use some day is the plastic grate crate. Cheap, stackable, and full of holes and ways to pick it up. Even the return of the orange jugs (CDI two-thousand-something) would be plenty interesting.

Three keys I would love to see are:
-Safety (proper field protection and inherent in the game design)
-Creativity (items, field set up, competition style)
-Funity for all (designers, builders, drivers, judges, and audience)

Re: [OCCRA]: 2005 OCCRA Game

AS one of the game designers for OCCRA I do read these messages.

The game/kit design committee have met and have a great start to the game in the fall.

We have a formulas that involves many aspects that get out of hand with FIRST due to the advanced kit. Since we are 100% student built and designed we need to keep it real and keep the game as CLEAR as possible.

We have decided the following as goals for the fall season:

1. The game must not be decided by a referee with many rules to enforce. We will have only common sense rules such as not going into the stands to scare the people watching.

2. The scoring of the match must be able to be completed by the refs in less than 15 seconds. The teams should know the score as it must be clear what is a score and what is not.

3. The game should be explainable to a person from the street in less than 3 min. - This can be by example (during the match) and as scoring is going on as well as setup and tear down.

There are several more we have but I will stop here.

Game Hint #1 5/9/05

During the ____ min match, ___ teams will score _____ on the _____ that is located on the field. The match will be decided by the team that has the highest score. NO you will not get the losers score at any time.

Size of robots Hint #2 5/9/05

The robots will be big enough not be considered small and will fit thru the average door to a field house or gym. They will weigh the same as last year 120 lbs. and be _____ in height at the start of the match.

You fill in the blanks

I think each team should fill out Mr. Martus's riddle like a mad lib, and the most hilarious result will become the new game. All you need is three numbers and two nouns:

During the pi (3.1415...) min match, seven teams will score safety glasses on the tree that is located on the field. The match will be decided by the team that has the highest score. NO you will not get the losers score at any time.

The robots will be big enough not be considered small and will fit thru the average door to a field house or gym. They will weigh the same as last year 120 lbs. and be 42 and three-quarters in height at the start of the match.

During the 3 min match, 6 teams will score floppys on the opst that is located on the field. The match will be decided by the team that has the highest score. NO you will not get the losers score at any time.

The robots will be big enough not be considered small and will fit thru the average door to a field house or gym. They will weigh the same as last year 120 lbs. and be 65 inches in height at the start of the match.

I really liked the tubies, but i agree that we need an object without holes that requires a gripper to pick up.

wow i find it hard to believe they used balls... again
but this will be fun anyway

anyways, an extra drill motor.... hmmmm....
btw as a team who has never used any motors except the drills and the seat motor, how do we go around connecting a sprocket or anything to a motor such as the window motors or the new tailgate motor?
