Have You Attended Multiple High Schools? Do They Have FIRST Teams?

I attended two high schools (many, many years ago), due to a move with my family in my junior year. I am delighted to say that both high schools now have FRC Teams - Baldwin Senior High School, Baldwin, NY, now has Team 1546, and Rockville High School, Vernon, CT, has Team 173.

Has anyone else attended more than one high school and they all have FRC Teams?

My friend is moving at the end of this year to Milford, home of Hot team. So yes, there are FRC teams at both the schools he's been to. It's too bad, though...we're losing our battery changer :yikes:

Unfortunately, not both of mine. Sherrard (my old school) has been with team 648 since its inception. Moline was in 1999-2001 and I have been trying vigorously to get them to join in again.

The school our team represents is actually made up of students from multiple highschools in the area.

There are many teams that are made up of students from multiple high schools (see this presentation given at the conference in Atlanta).

I'm just curious about people that have attended two (or more) high schools, both of which have teams.

My brother and I started out at Appleton East (#93) but our family had to move halfway through my senior (his freshman) year. I graduated at semester, to avoid having to attend and graduate from another high school (for only a semester) and he now attends Pewaukee HS, home of #1259, Paradigm Shift. When our family was looking for houses, it was kind of nice because there are so many FIRST teams in this area (269, 537, 706, 930, 1091, 1259, 1268, 1675) so anywhere we would have moved, there would have been a FIRST team nearby.

Time to age myself
7 years ago when I was a freshman at Lake High School in NW Ohio (South of Toledo, were team #279 is from) i tried, in vain, to get my highschool to start a first team. I found out about it from my uncle who was a professor at the Coast Guard Academy.

Whats kinda funny about all this is: My parents moved from Macon, GA, to North Royalton, Ohio, then moved to Toledo. I moved to Kent, OH For college and got involved with NRHS Robotics this year. So i actually went to a grade school who's highschool would have a first team eventually :D Does that count?

Heh, I had the same thing that you did. Went to a grade school in Norwell, Mass, moved to Florida, 9th grade school didn't have a FIRST team, 10th grade school (current one) did.

my freshman year I went to Mundelein high school out of Illinois and they did not have one there. Now I am at harrison who still does not have an official team yet( I am working on getting one started next year) but we feed into team 461 at west side. Hopefully someone from team 111 will read this post and try and get a team started over at Mundelein. It is only 40 minutes from schaumburg and rolling meadows. Than again the stevenson team would do just fine as well helping them get a team off the ground.

Re: Have You Attended Multiple High Schools? Do They Have FIRST Teams?

Well...I haven't actually attended multiple high schools...(i'm currently finishing my senior year at ETEP Technology High in São José dos Campos, Brazil...) but the high school i would've attended, had my family stayed in the U.S., started a FIRST team this year (Team 1505 Roybotics, if i'm not mistaken...). I just thought that it was bit peculiar...that out of ALL of the hundreds of High Schools in Utah, RHS was the only one to participate....and out of the thousands of schools in Brazil i was fortunate enough to end up going to one with a FIRST team...! So I guess it didn't matter whether i moved or not...it was my fate! lol...

Small world...

Re: Have You Attended Multiple High Schools? Do They Have FIRST Teams?

I have been to three high schools.

My Junior year, at Saint Cloud high School was my first year involved in FIRST. I heard an announcement that they were starting a new robotics team, so I hopped on what became team 1390 and then forced my friends to get involved as well. During my junior year there was a new school being reconstructed equal distance from my house in the new town of Harmony. My house, as well as my friends' houses, were all rezoned for Harmony High School, however the incoming seniors had a choice of where they could go to school.

After toiling with the choice for some time, I think my final decision maker was after the Championship last year, I could only stay for the first two days and then had to come back home to Florida at watched the rest over webcast. I knew where I had to go after hearing Dean's speech and his homework assignment was to "start new teams." My friends and I from 1390 that were zoned for Harmony (3 seniors) decided to go.

My freshman and Sophomore years I spent in Bartlesville Oklahoma. Currently there is no FIRST team there, however I have given speeches last summer and plan to do so again this summer. I am working with other FIRSTers in Oklahoma to get a team going in my old school. It is great that I have been given the opportunity to do all the things and meet all the people I have, but I feel it is important to bring back experiences and try to share with the people in one's hometown. After all, Dean's homework this year again is to "start new teams."

Re: Have You Attended Multiple High Schools? Do They Have FIRST Teams?

Hi - my son Tyler attended Highland High School in California and started team #1110 because they didn't have a FIRST team - we moved to Utah nearly two years ago and Tyler started team #1505 at Roy High School. Pretty cool huh - if the school doesn't have a team - just start one. :) The second team took much longer to get started though - I'm guessing because Utah didn't have any other teams and had never heard of it before. We're going to move again this summer back to California and I've found a FIRST team in Anaheim where we will be going - maybe my other two kids will go to that school.......

When I was in high school, i attended 2 high-schools simultaniouslly. Brandon High (formerly 1010) and OSMTech academy (27). WFA recipent Kyle Hughes was my math teacher for 4 years!

Oddly enough, I wasn't on either of these teams. I was recruited by Truck Town, team 68.

Waaaaaay easier said than done, but fantastic spirit nonetheless. And Pattie, just for the record, I did follow your advice. My high school had a team, my college, nor any area high schools didn't. That's a tough one to try but fantastic opportunity if you can pull it off

Hi Beth,

Yes it is very hard work to make it happen - and I'm sure luck and timing have a whole lot to do with it - but its SO WORTH IT! I don't think I'd be nearly as impressed with our efforts if it had come easy....... If you impress yourself you've done a good job!

Good luck to ya!

Pattie ;)

I've been to two different high schools. And my school last year didn't have a team. So I started one.

Next (school) year I'm transfering to the public high school in Nashua. They have a team (151), but I'm too loyal to 811 to join 151.. :)

Yeah, you'll still be in the same town, and they'd skin you (metaphorically speaking of course) if you defected to the cross-town rivals. 166, however, might be considered an even exchange. ;)

In my case, I moved an hour away and needed to find a closer team. I'd be loyal but driving to Nashua in the snow this year has convinced me that it's not quite a good idea. (That's why you saw me at Mayhem -- it was nice non-snowy weather.)

More on-topic, I only went to one high school (Locust Valley HS in Locust Valley, NY), and every year I look for their new FRC team only to be disappointed. I kinda wish they'd had FIRST when I was there, but then, when I graduated (1996), FIRST was only five years old and likely existed only in New England. What matters is I'm here now, I suppose. I would have liked to have been a student at some point rather than just a mentor, though.

Re: Have You Attended Multiple High Schools? Do They Have FIRST Teams?

Team 836 is made up of all the high schools in the county and is based in the technical center which students from 3 high schools attend. And I have attended 2 of the 3 high schools in the county and the technical center for 3 years. So all of the high schools are connected to the team, but each school doesn't have its own team.

Hey,
Norwell, Mass has a Robotics Team. If you are at Nationals go to the #348 pit and you might remember some of us.

I attended three high schools (military brat):
Bitburg American High School in Germany
Wyoming Valley West in PA
Rome Free Academy in NY

None of them have FIRST teams.
I'm working on changing that.

Well, I've attended 2 high schools as well. The first school didnt have a first team and still doesnt, and the second school didnt have a team either (mainly because this was the first year the school was open) so we started one. (Have you ever been student body president of a brand new school and started a FIRST team at the same time?)

Barry Bonzack 27-08-2006 02:52

Tri-County Tech in Bartlesville has announced they will have a robotics team this year! This news probably deserves its own thread, I may post some pictures later. As stated before, I gave two presentations in summer of 2004 to start the first sparks. Summer 2005 team 476 graciously brought their robot and some students to give a presentation. Earlier this week I stopped Tri-County Tech to meet the new teacher. (I'm in town visiting my parents). On the way to her room I passed by their welding shop and machine shop. My jaw hit the floor. I gave the teacher some whitepapers from NEMO and discussed other things with her. I had a radio interview earlier this week and yesterday I gave two speeches, which lead to a third for a school interested in FLL. This town is booming with potential, I can't wait to see them mature. I would like to send a BIG thanks to Tonya Scott, Ken York, and the entire 476 team for their continued support for helping this Bartlesville team. Also thanks goes to Jack and Jane Sellers for helping organize efforts.

The first high school I attended, Stonewall Jackson, was in the stone ages when it came to technology with only 1 accessable computer lab in the entire building running old Pentium 2 era machines. Nothing in the technology field was supported.

Battlefield HS is the only school in Prince William County with a robotics team.
