if you were allowed to keep one part..

if you were allowed to keep one part of your robot. one part as in a single piece, to take home, what would you take?
i would probably take the rear right tire. (why rear right? because it supported the weight of our robot more than any other part.)

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

I actually did take home our "sideways wheels" which were supposed to help us move sideways (with the help of the omni wheels); they weren't perfectly round (the bottom was flat, so when we didn't need them, they wouldn't be touching the ground), so people kept asking about them. It's kind of hard to explain them - maybe I'll post a picture of them when they were on the robot. Even though we couldn't get them to work just right (which is why I have them!), they are still a good reminder of this year's ideas!

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

After thinking about it for a while, I would want one of the smaller pieces of the robot, but one that I have spent many hours with. The take up spool covers that keep the wire from unwrapping were very important to us when we were competing. They let our drivers worry less about being careful with the lift, and focus on scoring. I would take the left spool cover because of my effort that went into it, our lift almost(ok, one match the plexiglass adhesive sorta glued the spool and the guard together, disabling our lift, but we went and won that regional anyways, so its pretty much water under the bridge.) never suffereded any limiting malfunctions during a match at any of our competitions.

EL JORGE! what else would I want...considering I created the beast. :p Sadly, I didn't get him....

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

Ockham, for reference

Personally, I'd either take the end of the arm or one of the covers that hid all that extrusion and belting from the world. Simply because they're the sexiest parts 1293's put on a robot. Close second and third goes to the aluminum we used to mount electronics and the pulley housing, which takes the place of the kitbot top plate in that picture.

(Yes, I just called a couple of parts off our robot sexy. Yes, I am a geek.)

I have a wheel for TOBOR 6, signed by team 93, for me, when I had to move in the middle of my seniore year. It's sitting on a shelf in my closet, with my signed (by everyone at Midwest in 2002) soccer ball on top of it. :)

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

I don't have to pick a single part because right now I have the whole robot at my house for the JPL open house tomorrow. But if I had to pick one part, I would probably say a wheel It is very cool because it was machined from one solid piece of aluminum. Second pick would probably be a shifting dog.

I would have to pick the part on our robot that broke. :( , it cost us to get replaced, but hey, thats not the worst that coulda happened

I'd take the robot controller :)

I'd take the Mechanism that drove our arm up and down, such fine engineering. And I'd probably find a use for it.

the skins from are 2003 robot, i designed them. I just that they looked awesome

We actually did hand out robot parts once at regionals instead of buttons...they were broken "baby feet" or pieces of our treads that we had eaten though. They had nice little holes in them to bolt to the tabbed chain so you could wear them quite easily...I have a few of them in my room...and our robotics room is still full of them...

I'd take one of the omni wheels. I'd have no use for it outside of robotics, but I think it would still be cool to have.

That's easy.
Everybody I talked to said it was their favorite part of our robot.

The camera =)

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

Well, I already took home the original "thumb" for our robot. This original one was mangled when I cut it the wrong way on Ship Date, and it ended up taking a very tiny chunk out of my finger, so I have kept it as a memento.

Another thing that my team has done over the past two years is take off one of the "license plates" from our robot and given it to our most treasured team mentor, and I would really like to get one before I leave the team this year. (Hint to my teammates. ;))

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

For me, its camera and the SCME
SCME stands for "Sweetest Camera Mount Ever", it was dubbed that by the rest of the team. It essentially looked like an erector set attached to the side of our robot :D i was $@#$@#$@#$@# proud of my handy work :D

it was based on the stock camera mount, modified for 2 axis rotation. Problem, since it was my rookie year, i heavily underestimated how much abuse it would have to take. It broke our second time out due to auto code error and some rough driving.

for this year's bot i would probably the back bent bars...boy did we have lots of memories connected to them...for the match w/ 179 in south carolina, pre-season scrimmage in 179's pit when the winch stalled...the beating they took at UCF....so i had to replace the bars but that's okay...

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

From this years robot I would probably keep, the right front angle aluminum gaurd. Just because I fabricated the gaurd, broke it in competition and fixed it again. Alot of time and effort went into those gaurds, and it was the only thing protecting the air tanks and release valve, that never got damaged.

I would for sure keep a wing. Not only are they pretty and unique, they were the part of the robot that I worked most on.

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

i would totally take a castor...i formed this weird attachment to the castors, dunno why...i even had a pair of them in my carry on luggage on the way to championships and i had to call airport cargo and security to make sure that my having them wouldnt cause problems. and the bag-checker looked at me funny but i explained and then he laughed and waved me on so it was all good. but the castors were awesome, they made us a little too pushable but then again we were fast and fast is good. we were able to avoid confrontation and i liked that...

Re: if you were allowed to keep one part..

I did get to keep one part of the robot this year...a wheelchair wheel. We had some trouble with our omnis at UTC, as they were burning holes in the carpet, so we had to put the wheelchair ones on as replacements. At Philly, we managed to shatter the center out of two of them. At the end of competition, I was instructed to throw them out. Instead, I made a necklace out of one using the beads my team was giving out. It's hanging in my room as we speak.

If I were allowed to take any part home, I'd take the Bobcat 2004's basket mechanism for small balls. Think of the storage possibilities!

Robot Controller because I spend hours programming on that thing.
