friends
i was wondering if most of your team were friends before you joined your team? I have made alot of friends on my team and i love robotics, but i can honestly say that i might (more like probably) :( made fun of people in this. But being in it has really changed my outlook.
anway, i know if you are all on one school this might be a dumb question but to those people whose teams were not started by a school. Did you join FIRST with a bunch of your friends or by yourself? |
Actually, I started out knowing no one last year, and now know everyone on the team, but beforehand, my fellow robotics people were just faces in the crowd, as it were.:(

haha...well not exactly...some of the kids i knew and i was friends with but traveling and this experience has only made those friendships about ten times better...and my friend dave is a lot better now...
Not just on my team...but ive met soo many new people its amazing...the off-team relationships are the things i treasure about FIRST |
Most of the people on my team I knew before FIRST - I had to to get them involved...lol
But there are definately more friendships now than before. I think anytime that a group of people undertake a project of this magnitude the people involved are bound to grow closer. Altho, I must say that having a successful team helps everyone 'like' each other...Simply cause there isnt finger pointing going on (which sadly can happen on teams that lose - esp rookie teams that lose). |
well, a few of the people i was friends with/knew before the team started. then, i became friends with other kids from my school, a couple of college kids, and a cool engineer from festo :D. i probably never would have met them otherwise, and i think we all get along pretty well. there are also some people who i'd rather have not ever met, but i wont go into that.
i've also made a few "online friends" who i hope to meet at nats, and i think i've started a new union as well. never would have done that without joining a FIRST team. :p |
Our whole team pretty much knew each other because our school is extremely small but First has given me the oppurtunity to get to know those I didn't know really well before better. We've all gotten to know each other better and have become a lot better friends.

You know how it is: your friend brings you in, you have a great time, and you bring more of your friends in. HUGE thanks to Lee Machado, Chris Flynn, and Scott Porto. (Does anyone know a way out? )

I joined because when I went to high school most of my friends were juniors, and they were all like you have to do it. I didnt really know what it was about, just heard about the trips :) and it ended up being lots of fun and a good experience. But I did make a few of my friends join with me.

I didn't know anyone on my team before I started, other than a freshman. However, by the end of the season, I am friends with most of the team.
Life is good.:D |
I only knew two people on my team before I was really on it..and everyone else I pretty much met through it..mainly b/c most of my team doesn't go to my school..perhaps i would have met some of them through band or quiz bowl, though..I'm not sure..

Actucally, when i joined, i knew no one. Now, you will know me, and i will know you all. I am the loud one that is the biggest dork and makes the wrong comments at the wrong time. Hey, what can i say, i want to be an engineer when i grow-up :D!!!

I have friends i knew before they joined our team....friends i met on our team....friends i met on other teams....even a couple friends i knew before they joined other teams.
Most i think are people i was friends with before we joined the team, but i think the most special are people that i meet from other teams because i know i wouldn't have met them any other way. |
We all go to a governor's shchool, so the people on my team come from 7 or so local schools. Plus, 99% of the people are either juniors or seniors. I started FIRST as a freshman, and consequently knew no one at all on our team. This year I'm a sophmore, but at the start I only knew the 3 or so returning students. But I've made friends with most of the people on our team, as one of the girls on our team put it "I spend more time with them then I do with my family" :)

I'll leave it up to each of you to decide whether or not it's a good thing...lol |
I have been friends with a lot of my teammates since elementary school! There are also a lot of families on our team ... a brother and sister... two sisters and a brother ... three sisters and (in a few years) a brother ... a brother (and soon) a sister ... two brothers (and soon a third) ... a brother and (soon) his brother) ... myself and (in a few years) my brother ... that's 7 families that I can think of! So if you know one sibling, you usually know the whole family too :) So yes, I was friends or I at least knew most of my teammates before joining the team!
