Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
1139 is losing the heads of almost every group - four seniors - and two or three other members, cutting our size down by about a third. We tried to do a sort of seniors-training-newbies thing this year, which may or may not have worked..

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
Let's see.. we are losing 4 people on the animation team (out of 5), me (only programmer), main student that does electrical, webmaster, and probably a bunch more.
Next year is going to be interesting for them. |
Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
heh. team 1712, which is a rookie team, is loosing 3 seniors. the problem is though that I, being one of them, am the only one who knows all the tools and building techniques, one of the other ones is increadible with design and programming, and the last one has built robots for the show Battle Bots, so knows how to make the entire robot system. so my team will really be loosing everyone who knows what theyre doing. it kind of sucks.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
Oh yes, I was going to comment on this as well. Moojoe pretty much has cut all the necessary peices for our chassis himself and is the go to guy when we need something cut, drilled, screwed, ect.; Our lead programmer is the best we have and has pretty much studied all the aspects of programming and pretty much begs to have the programming laptop with him at all times; lastly, our head robot designer and driver has been on battlebots and has quite a bit of experience with robots already. And all three of these guys are leaving after this year... fun.
But luckily, we always have somebody around that is watching these guys and going out and learning this stuff for themselves, so we are trying to transfer that knowledge from them to other members of the team. It will be tough for next year, but we have a bunch of great mentors and college students helping us out so I think it will be fine. Will just cause everybody else to work harder and show off their true potential. |
Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
As a graduating class we want to win at everything this year (at least everything we can). We are aiming for the Chairman's Award at Nationals and we want to win the the AZ Regional. We also want to win the MATE ROV Competition and hopefully come back and mentor the team....

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
Our team is usually an all senior team so we loose basically all our team members every year. However, because of the way the class is set up, most of us on the team have taken multiple technology/manufacturing classes. So we aren't completely lost.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
I've been on my team for a couple of years now, and I've experienced those moments where a third of our awesome seniors leave. Each year, students would always talk about how the team will be like after all the seniors are gone. Who would do this, or how the group will function without them. But over it all, some way, some how, and magically, the younger students have always stepped up to the plate when a filling was needed.
From my perspective, seniors are role models there to show the rookies or younger veterans how FIRST is like. Moreover, they teach the younger members how to make FIRST all worth it and exciting. They're like older brothers and sisters showing us what to do. As they leave, their legacy stays behind and the rookies along with the younger veterans carry on the team. :D |
Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
Only two freshmens made the team this year so im always reminding them that i am their future :D

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
We lost half of our team to graduating seniors at the end of last season. Only 4 of us went to college close enough to be able to mentor the team on a regular basis. We thought that we had a lot more new members to replace the old ones, but as it turned out, when build season rolled around, most of them stopped coming because of the time commitment. But the ones who did stay, are learning very quickly. Some of them have already started to take on the leadership roles left by the graduating seniors. If I sounded overly worried at the end of last season, I'm not any more. This team is still in good hands no matter how many seniors the team loses each year.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
OooOOo nice thread! well, O goshies, losing seniors. i dislike losing the seniors. they mean so much to me. Even when or for the people we just meet when we just got on the team. Gosh, but like my coach says to us. we have to give e/other respect and treat each other like family cause really you spend almost half of your school year with them. So yes, it's like your second family. Thats why they are like family to me. This is my 3rd year, and losing a member on the team gosh it's so heart breaking. you won't get to spend time with them no more. (unless they come back and mentor) but yeah, anyways. I'm always gonna miss the seniors every year. But every year it is going to be better then the next sOOoo yeap! Always keep your hopes up! ....
talking about seniors, there is alot that is going to leave after this year! Ooo goshers, ...let me think...: 1,2,3,4,5....uhm..(*thinking...)[(Chris,lee,Brian,BO,jerry, who else??? whats that only four!) i'll need to go check on that too! heheh |
Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
 Cyber Blue's losing 12 of their 37 members next year. We have quiet a few good juniors and underclassmen, but 12 is a large number of people when several of them are good team leaders.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
People ask every year, "How will the team replace such great seniors next year?" But luckily, it always seems to work itself out. Just make sure to promote the team to younger students so that they will be interesting in joining the team, and let the freshman get involved so that they carry on the soon-leaving team members' knowledge.

Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
graduation or not they can't get rid of me that easy, I came back this year to mentor and hope to do the same for many years to come
|
Re: Teams losing lots of seniors
We are only losing one student to the scourge of graduation this year, despite the programs best efforts at preventing it.
Me. |
