Re: hurricane season 05
All I know is I've heard some crazy stories about what those college kids do during hurricanes......
the weather always does funny things to people, like when it snows, all these engineers take kids, lock themselves in machine shops & build robots......weird |

fortunately for me (and anyone else in the tampa bay area), tampa bay seems to be in a hurricane "slump" (i.e., we never get hit), though forecasters are saying that this season is going to be worse than last... |

Re: hurricane season 05
Ok well this is a pretty intresting hurricane, definetly a result of El Nino Here's Cnn's Take on it.
And on the hurrican season, they already have announced they expect at least 5 ones to hit the east coast this year..eek, wait yay! No school possibilities! (my house doesn't flood do to the fact we had to get it sealed because of radon levels) Well anyway this is what Reuters typed And while i'm at it, lets take a look at the Hurricane Names for this year. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Well somebody let me know, because I've got an awesome Florida visit trip planned (probably summer or winter break) and I need to be prepared for that sort of thing.
|
Re: hurricane season 05
if it's winter lol don't worry about it...season is over in november...
lol...L is lee...that's my last name :D a house on my block already is all boarded up lol..guess they went away for the summer... |
Re: hurricane season 05
yay! or grr - i can't decide.
my dad and i put up the shutters last time -- several times. so whatever let's see how this goes. i hope i don't end up staying up all night studying by candle again -- specially since my room is the hottest in the house. but i love rain so.... bring it on ^_^ |
Re: hurricane season 05
This evening, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in South Florida.
To all who are affected by this storm - you are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everyone is safe. Story from weather.com - http://www.weather.com/newscenter/tr...=wxcenter_news -- Jaine |
Re: hurricane season 05
from what i know everyone that we know is safe. it wasn't that bad. i've delt with worse. it hit the southern counties. their power is being restored so they all should be online and all.
:) just gotta love these hurricanes.... flights will be back up and running soon so some kids can go off to college |
Re: hurricane season 05
Stay safe, guys! We're keeping you in our prayers.
|
Re: hurricane season 05
well it's out of south Florida hairs but it may hit up in the panhandle, go through Georgia or Alabama perhaps..we shall see. it's up to category 2 w/ the warm temperatures in the gulf of Mexico.
any teams that in the projected path and every family too.. i pray you all keep safe... these storms are no joke.. 4 people died down south i read b/c they were out and about. stay inside it may be a low category but does a lot of damaged.. over 1 million people out of power still.... :( just a quickie update for anyone who isn't paying attention to this storm... |

Re: hurricane season 05
wow, has anyone else noticed how the whole earth is having weird weather. I mean its not only places like US, but Durham region, and Markham (next to toronto) had floods, and heavy winds...(it's pretty uncommon here, I dont think that we've had floods here)
also, while I was in Mumbai (aka Bombay, India), it was monsoon season. that means that there is the occational small flood....this time it poured about 1 metre in a day! that set a new world record. Luckily for me, my friends and family didn't get affected much in that flood, except my cousin, who decided to walk through that for about 5 hours(getting home from college) but he's safe...but, LOT of people died though, and now there's lots of water-bourne diseases getting people, and killing people too. It's really sad if you think about all the helpless people dying from drowning, and diseases. These are just a couple of examples of the odd weather going on around the globe, theres probably a lot more going on that I don't know about. |
Re: hurricane season 05
I talked to my parents on friday afternoon, eye went right over our house. He said that no one in the neighborhood was prepared becuase all the tv/paper/hurricane center said that it wouldnt be much of a storm. The power was still out and had been since 4pm on thursday. We fared well but friends further south lost thier roof and have a foot of water in thier house.

Re: hurricane season 05
new update: 7 people are dead now
and one person is suffering due to lack of power and hence he is not on cd -- please send your prayers to arefin bari. quote: "i need my powerrrrrrrrr backkkkkkkkkkk and i miss chiefdelphiiiiiiii" i actually got power back 2 hours ago, finally. and there are still people who don't have power =( |
Re: hurricane season 05
Next time... I am going to take a gun and go out there after the hurricane. I have been sweating way too much since thursday night. :)
... but... I am back. :D I missed Chiefdelphi. :( As far as I know everyone around is safe. |
Re: hurricane season 05
175 mph winds with dropping pressure. :ahh: I believe that speaks for itself. For those in the New Orleans area and/or others in the path of this storm, stay safe and get out before its too late. Good luck. -Joe |
Re: hurricane season 05
Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends to the south.
|
Re: hurricane season 05
Just a headup to everyone.... please be prepared forehand. You are not going to like it when you don't have any supplies after the hurricane makes all it's damages. I am a victim and I know how it feels like. Put shutters up now, if possible get a backup generator for your house. It really helps.
Our prayers are with you. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Yes this hurricane is huge. Hurricane Andrew (which i was in when i was 4) was only 140 mph -- and this is 175 mph -- no joke. we have damage all over our complex due to the tropical storm winds ... about 1/9 of what it is now. well maybe a bit stronger.
Please everyone take care and prepare. Batteries, generators, WATER, radios, edible food, charge your phones -- don't overlook anything. i'm wondering what New Orleans is going to do -- the city's below sea level as it is. Our prayers ARE with you -- |
Re: hurricane season 05
I totally second Neha's comments. Though I have never been in a hurricane myself, I know the damage and devastation that they can cause. President Bush called the Governor of Louisiana this morning and requested that everyone be evacuated from at least the New Orleans area.
This one is huge and there is nothing stopping it. |

But seriously...everyone take care. I do have one question for all of you though. Why do people continue to live in a place that consistantly has disasters like this? I live in California and we have earthquakes every so often, but it doesn't happen every year... There's only been one massive one in my lifetime and a bunch of medium to small ones. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Well think of it this way. I live in fort lauderdale and we haven't been hit with a major hurricane since andrew -- in 1992 -- 13 years ago and to this day we haven't been hit. this year we were touched by two minor hurricanes/storms: dennis and katrina and barely touched by three last year but never hit head on.
Now, we have great weather and opportunities and we didn't necessarily CHOOSE to live here. So no, the disasters are not consistent, we get storms just like michigan and new mexico do. It's like a mini-rain season that happens to take our power away every now and then (mini because the hurricane's affects spanned thursday-saturday... that's not long compared to what could happen...). Yes, people have died but it's nothing compared to what COULD happen. And for those who are to be affected/have been affected by the hurricane, if there is anything we can do for you, please let us know, we are more than glad to do so. don't know if i'm making sense... by the way, this is all my opinion... no facts were stated (except that andrew really did hit in 1992...and that WAS 13 years ago...give or take...) |
Re: hurricane season 05
There is no part of the world that is without peril in some form or another. The coast worries about hurricanes, the plains about tornados and the west about earthquakes. I live in the shadow of a big, scary volcano.
It just so happens that these weather and geographical features that endanger our lives are most often the same forces the ensure our livelihood. It's not a coincidence that the best farming lands are often flood plains. That said, I noticed today there are a handful of FIRST teams from New Orleans and they're relatively new to our community. I wanted to take a moment to remind them, if any are reading this, that the graciousness extends beyond the competition. If there's anything y'all need as a team, as people -- as family -- please let us know. |
Re: hurricane season 05
My mom and my little brother and sister live in Biloxi, Mississippi. They have decided to ride it out and stay at home. All of the windows are boarded up anything and everything outside is tied down. I have been through some of the worst hurricanes including hugo, andrew, emily, and many many more i know what everyone in the south is going through.
My thoughts and prayers are with my friends family and everyone one back home. Good luck guys. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Just an update. To put things in a perspective. . . In 1969 when Camille hit there was no flooding in the city of D'Iberville. (where my mom lives), I just heard a report that there is 6ft of water in the city of D'Iberville. I still havn't been able to contact them.
The bridge from Ocean Springs to Biloxi is gone. Many of the casinos, Treasure Bay, Grand Casino, The Copa and some other ones are on the wrong side of Hwy 90. Complete and unimaginable destruction. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Yes this hurricane is much worse than Camille. I am from Gulfport, on the MS Gulf Coast. My family evacuated thankfully and they are ok, but unfortunately that is not the case for everyone down there. Everything down there is gone, just completely wiped out. Go to www.wlox.com and www.sunherald.com for videos and pictures. We got the NE corner of the storm, which is usually the worst part. This hurricane shattered high water mark records from Camille. I think some of the surges reached at least 26 feet. Death toll currently 80, expected to reach over 200. Gulfport, Biloxi, the whole area is basically gone. Infrastructure totally wiped out. No phones, electricity, anything. Even some of the roads are destroyed. New Orleans is now a giant lake. The levee was breached in a few places and the water level is still rising there. There are alot of people down there who have been severly hurt by this hurricane, it will be a long time before everything is back to normal there.

Re: hurricane season 05
I just talked to my mom diriectly and they are ok. but the damage is worse than we thought.
I just got word that my family in D'Iberville mississippi are alive and well. Their house still stands with roof intact with about 5 ft of flood water inside they lost everything they are currently staying in a camper with friends in the neighborhood with a generator. they managed to save a BBQ grill and are using it to cook and boil water. My moms neighbors house is in the middle of the road. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this storm. |
Re: hurricane season 05
How scary! My thoughts are with you and your family! Good luck!

Re: hurricane season 05
well hurricane wilma is now a cat. 5..it is suppose to weaken but it will be affecting the state of florida this weekend.. i pray everyone is safe and gets prepared...remember hurricanes are no joke..even a cat. 1 will do some damage...
hopefully by tomorrow nite we'll know more where it is hitting so many can evacute in time... |
Re: hurricane season 05
I have half of my shutters closed. We will close the other half tomorrow. The weather is expected to be really bad in about 24 hours from now. (between about midnight and 8 AM) We are looking at a category 1 for my area. The west coast of Florida should get it worse. My friend's house is still being rebuilt from last year. His roof blew off in Hurricane Frances and the house blew down in Hurricane Jeanne.

Re: hurricane season 05
To everyone in South Florida -
I am thinking about you and holding you in my thoughts constantly. Please stay safe. You are in my prayers. -- Jaine |
Re: hurricane season 05
everyone's put up shutters down here. we'll be getting hurricane winds but who knows what that means. it's all good until the power goes out x_x
![]() yes. boarded up (i did those myself!). i don't even know when it got dark outside because it was dark inside from like 5pm on. good luck to everyone else. i hope you guys are safe and not doing anything crazy. |
Re: hurricane season 05
well the only thing i hate about shutters if i don't look at the clock i don't know what time it is. i sleep in waaaaaaaaaay to late b/c the sun doesn't shine in...
i went home but back to school... Jupiter and Hobe Sound (that's in Palm Beach-Martin County area) is suppose to get the eye passing over... Broward and Miami and many other counties will be affected with mass rain and flooding. well that the east coast of Florida...where it enters on the West... and those counties will experience bad conditions. Well many parts of Florida will from the major hurricane force winds to the tropical storm winds. and the storm many be affecting the northeast us too. I hope everyone will be safe..and power restored quickly. It is a huge pain without power. Please be careful with down powerlines and walking outside. We all love to go outside and see the damage and all but be cautious. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Being amateur radio operators, my family leaves right after the hurricane to help at shelters or where ever help is needed. It is now illegal to listen to police bands on a radio or scanner while driving, but today we did that. We are allowed to because of the our licenses. All day we were listening to the Martin County Emergency Operations Center and emergency communications. I don't know where I will be deployed in the next ten hours or so, but I plan to help many people, possibly saving lives. I better go get some sleep soon, it will be kind of hard with that hurricane.
Remember, don't step in puddles. Don't touch metal fences. Don't do anything stupid like that because there will be down powerlines everywhere. Barely anyone is killed in a hurricane; many people are killed afterwards from doing stupid things. Never run your generator unless it is in a very well ventillated area and let it cool down before refueling. Do not go out driving Monday unless absolutely needed. Leave the roads open for emergency vehicles. School in Martin County is canceled Monday and Tuesday so far. Good luck everyone and stay safe. |
Re: hurricane season 05
*Sounding like a news reporter:*
The wind outside is really strong. The shutters are raddling and were raddling all through the night from about 3:00 AM on. it is still really bad at about 10:30 and the power here went out for awhile. Power is still out all over the area except right where I am because I am right next to the hospital and since the winds just died down below 60 miles per hour, FP&L crews were out here trying to restore power to the hospital. The eye of the storm is currently passing just south of us. The wind is ocming from the east. We tried opening the side door and couldn't because of the pressure of the air outside and wind, two of us couldn't push it open. We could see through a very small crack in our shutters and a car went driving by and blew sideways off the road. The guy kept going. Another guy was just killed because he went outside during the storm to check damage to his house. He was hit by flying debris. I guess that's all for now. I can't imagine what it is like further south near West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami. |
Re: hurricane season 05
well my rents have power again in palm city... and some parts of martin county..
it will be a while for Broward and Miami counties on the east coast of Florida I've talked to Arefin..he is fine.. he hates of course no power.. so no cd... thank goodness for the cold front.. Florida is in 50s 60s for a while.. I'm not sure what's up in the Naples area... i hope everyone gets back power soon. i know it's something we all rely on and want.. this has been an interesting hurricane season..breaking many records.. I've started this thread about the first and hopefully tropical storm alpha is the last for the year... the season ends soon thankfully enough... my thoughts are with all the victims of the 05 storms... |
Re: hurricane season 05
Up here in the northeast we are getting a nor'easter today which is being fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Wilma with heavy rains and winds in many areas. They are comparing it to the conditions that were dramatized in the movie "Perfect Storm" based on the storm of 1991. Although our damage nowhere near compares to that of our friends to the south who have been experiencing hurricane after hurricane, we have received more than 13 inches more rain than usual for the month, and many are experiencing power outages, flooding in basements, roofs leaking (that would be me), and raw sewage backing into basements by storm drains overfilling. They are predicting up to 7 inches of heavy wet snow for the Berkshire mountains of MA tonight. I'm dreading the coming winter. :(

Re: hurricane season 05
Well Living in miami... well so many trees down and some power has been restored (my home isn't so i'm stealing electricity off a reletive's house 10 streets down :D ) eventually school's canceled for the week in my area (Florida interntional university) and other schools. eh, hope everyone else has power back soon in the region
pictures coming soon..... |
Re: hurricane season 05
many of us broward-ers still don't have power...or phone...
but great news! as of 1-2 days ago, I can officially flush the toilet (which is a big thing, trust me). There's a major water/ice shortage (not to mention gas) here but thankfully, we have all three. I still don't have power but I got to sneak on at a friend's house. We are fine, the majority of the people i've spoken to are fine. We are very lucky actually, the majority of us have only lost trees, shingles, and maybe a few dents here or there. I know some people that lost their whole roof. It's funny, after being without power for 4 1/2 days you don't really care any more. I've made some friends with neighbors, walked around a lot and read a bunch for my SAT2s. School-wise, 25% of the schools have power as of now and they're working 'round the clock to get it to the rest of the schools for monday. We don't know whether that will happen or not. I have some really sweet footage during the hurricane (we thought the eye came and went outside...it turned out to be right before the hardest part of the hurricane). I walked outside and filmed a bit but I got yelled at to come back inside. I'll post it up asap. But the bottom line: we're okay! Just...no power for a while. Considering that I live in an area that didn't get power after Katrina because they DIDN'T KNOW OUR COMPLEX EXISTED... it may be a while. Updates later, wishes go out to all the people who were affected in wilma. |
Re: hurricane season 05
Oh yea…. I am back … again. I am sitting in Amanda’s dorm at FIT before I head to Orlando for the weekend. I do have power back at my house but still don’t have the phone line. Tytus and Amanda also says they are fine (Tytus: I got the BEST WAI PICTURE EVER). Anywho, as far as I know, everyone here in Broward County is safe. There were a lot of damage from Wilma, but we are recovering. Wilma has shown me what a hurricane can do, roof and shutters flying around, fences on the ground, big trees in the streets and backyard. If there was one thing I learned from this it is... NEVER play with the power of wind and water.
