6th Annual California Robot Games

We're trying to get Cal Games planning going, and we wanted to see what teams would be interested in coming, and if some potential dates we're looking at will work.

We're looking at pushing it back a ways so that teams have some time to actually work on their robots and attract new members/plan for the event. So we were thinking of October 22nd, October 29th, or November 12th. It will be held at Woodside High School again, for the third year.

If you could check with your teams and get back to us in the near future, that would be a great help to our planning. Thanks everyone!

I actaully plan on going to this. I would be careful about planning it around with other offseason comps though, I don't know if you usually get Michiganders, but October 22nd is right on Sweet Repeat time.

Also, you may consider taking a look at breaks. Thanksgiving falls on the 24-26 or so of November, and many colleges (where many mentors come from) have breaks in late October. Just some things to take into account. I'd like to attend Calgames personally :) Keep us updated.

Thanksgiving is a no go. None of the teams would show up.

The famous SCRRF Workshops are scheduled for Nov 12. So you probably want to avoid that date. I'll have to check on when the Fall Classic is planned. But I believe that is in October, possibly the 15th. Anyone from team 22 want to help me out here? I recall them being a month apart.

Since Southern California is probably your biggest potential source of out-of-area teams, I figured you should know our plans. (Sacramento isn't far enough from San Jose to be considered out-of-area by our measure) Besides the BeachBots would hate to miss due to a commitment closer to home.

Think about it, 254, 330, 980, and 22 all in one match. That would be one to see, no matter how they were matched up.

We definitely want to see the LA area teams up for Cal Games. if the Fall Classic is October 15th and the workshops are November 12th, it looks like October 29th would be the best for us, or else we'd have to look at the end of September/beginning of October like the last few years.

What I meant was, you need to plan around the fact that between October Break and Thanksgiving is a feasible timeline because after Thanksgiving colleges and highschools start loading in exams. ;) And some teachers aren't great about their students missing those for botics trips.

Sorry it wasn't clear.

My current team probably wouldn't be able to attend, but I will be up there for college at Berkeley, so I might be able to volunteer if needed pending my class schedule.

I might come out for Cal Games this year, what with missing IRI and all. :(

Cory, Bill,

I may not be involved with FIRST anymore, but I am definitely willing to help as much as I can to bridge the gap between the Cal Games we have the previous 2 years and the Cal Games coming this year. I am suddenly finding myself with a lot more time now that I don't have to think about robots anymore.

So, if there is anything I can do, any information and planning details I can provide, I will gladly do so. There is a tradition of all the years of Cal Games, and a collection of experiences built since 2000 that should not be lost. Overall Cal Games represents the community of the bay area FIRST teams. It would be a shame if everything have to start all over again.

So, let me know. I have every confidence that you guys and the bay area community have every talent and energy it takes to pull off another great event, because I have and always take pride in being a part of this wonderful community.

Good luck!

I think there'd be room in that matchup for 696 don't you? Hopefully we can make it up there. We'll see.

Is there a definite date set yet?

Well, I was planning on going to Disneyland in the Fall anway. This could be a fun diversion.

...wait, Disneyland is a fun diversion. This could be, uh, well, I guess it'd be nice to see people.

Not yet. We're going to meet with the admin soon to see what facilities we can get, and when.

We'll let everyone know when a decision is made.

If 254 would have come down to San Diego, that match would have probably happened. I remember seeing some pretty crazy matches in San Diego.

I would love to play with 254. We have never been on an alliance this year where the other bots can score strong enough to where we can play defense. We were always needed to score. I bet we can play really good defense, but we haven't ever had the chance too. If we get 254's crazy fast/strong arm on offense and our crazy fast/strong 6 motor two speed 6wd on defense, it would be total domination. Add 330 and 980 and 22 into the mix anywhere you want and it is sure to be one stellar match!

Sure there's two open slots! But I only included teams that have been competing on a national level for the recognition factor, as this is a nationwide forum. We could round it out with 698 (RAWC) or 634 (Van Nuys HS) among others.

(Hmm, why does this begin to sound like the final round at the LA regional, with a couple of locals switched in for the "foreigners"?)

You mean 968. I think 698 is the Microchip team. I bet they're good too but I doubt they'll be at Cal Games.

Bit of a trip, Cal Games are in northern California. Disneyland is in Southern California. Fun diversion down here: Fall Classic.

968 is gearing up to go. We are just waiting for dates. We need to get them pretty soon because the West Covina HS is very slow (as are many schools) with getting the OK for students to go on a local field trip let alone one thats 400 miles away. Keep up the good work guys and hope to see everyone there there.
