Most memorable moment at a first competition

What is your favorite memory of a FIRST event?

Harrison 21-04-2002 00:03

Gotta be strolling up the screen with the standings on it....Couldn't find my team....Then When it started going again I noticed that we were in 1st place...

Ended up 4th...But we were 1st/2nd for a while.

Only lost 2 matches in all the Q Rounds...thats pretty good.

i remember a match in the 2000 competition at the MMR where team 249 was blocking us from getting to the gaol, so we backed up and ramed them. they moved back, and cliped the bar under the goal and fell forward and were stuck. we lost the round (i think), but it was very exciting to see. those were the good old days.

it would either be last year at the MMR when we were the champions (i cried  ) or when we got the Delphi Driving Tomorrow's Technology Award at Nats. You can find Courtney and i gettng the award on the last page of the Competition books for this year!!!

2000 MMR

Probably the 2000 MMR Finals

It was 47, 111, and 45 all on the same alliance :D

Since 2000 was my first year this was pretty cool and it had a pretty big impact on my future in FIRST....

My favorite memory of a FIRST comp is the 2000 MMR when we won the regional with our partners Chief Delphi (47) and Wildstang (111)

Many.. but here is one

Man... it's tough to pick one. Here is one of my most proudest moments, along being very memorable.

It was 1999 at the Great Lakes Regional. One thing good about going to the Great Lakes Regional is that our corporate executives often show up to show support.

Well, we just finished one of our last qualification matches and our robot's elbow broke (on the TKO arm). We brought the robot back to the pit and it got crowded quickly. Before we know it, people were starting fixing the arm very quickly. It turns out that two of our lead mechanical students are the ones who are fixing the robot.

So, I'm standing there, simply holding parts (a couple of washers, a master link, and some chain) while these two students are doing the dirty work of fixing the elbow.

While these guys are working on the 'bot, I get tapped on the shoulder by our division president (a Delphi executive) and he says... "that match was pretty exciting, but this is even better!" So I say "what do you mean?" He replies... "you're the engineer, and it's your students who are doing the repair... that's pretty cool!"

Needless to say, I was very proud of our guys. This brief scene was much better than winning a match.

Checking one of the tall ball bots over the rail in 2000 and right onto the judges table, enough said.

AND getting to call my ex-boyfriend and tell him I now have 2 sportsmanship awards (2000 lone star and 2002 st louis)

AND having our engineer admit that another member of our team and I have more mechanical ability than he does

This is my first year being part of FIRST and I am on a rookie team so there many parts I liked alot. My favorite moment, if I had to pick one, in FIRST was being at the SPBLI Long Island Reginal. This was the first FIRST compotition that my team and I had ever gone to. I did scouting for my team and went to look at all the other robots. WOW, that was some experence to see all those different robots at my first compotition and I'm sure that the other scouts felt the same way.

well, one of my most memorable moments was during a match. we were losing, our robot was on the other side of the field, and perfectly lined up to come back. there also just happened to be a goal directly in the way, in scoring position for our opponents. so, me being the driver, and the only one in the player station who knew how the game played (yes, it's pretty sad), i gunned it full reverse, smashnig through the goal, and right into the player station. the entire player station shook, and i just smiled, cause i knew we had won (we got +10 points, they got -10 points). then, for some reason i do not know, and probably never will know, the human players on my alliance started throwing balls into the goal that i had knocked out of scoring position. because of that, we lost by a few points, and i'm still mad to this day. this is also why anyone going into the player station must be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and most importantly, know the rules of the game.

the coolest part about that round though, it left a lasting impression on our robot. literally. fropm smashing into the goal, i created a huge dent in an aluminum post on our robot. we left it in for good luck. :D

another memorable moment is the breaking of the lexan. yes, you can break lexan. :p if i hadn't smashed the robot into the goal, shearing off a bit of lexan, our robot would have been over weight (this happened during practice). the piece of lexan weighed about .2 lbs. our robot was 130.0 lbs, on the mark. we got very lucky i hit the goal with the lexan. :D

I'll have to say that the entire 1999 season was my favorite FIRST competition. Being a senior in high school and a driver for all 4 years, it was my point to go out with a bang, and make sure that the team did the best it possibly could. It was great in Florida, our first match we were paired with the CheesyPoofs and we were not getting any recognition for our bot, and we went out and had a nearly perfect match. From that point on, we stayed in the top 16 (top 3 slots for most of it) until the last match of the day. I'll never forget being in the pits next to the Technokats, and dreaming about how great it would be if we were paired up with them in elminiations. We never got our wish, but we still played against them in one match and were able to take a technotread and the bot almost completely off the puck. In the end...the match was 7 to 6, and probably the most intense match I'd ever seen up until that point. My last competiton as driver was also the last for Rumble at the Rock, one of the best offseason comps ever!

last year, about this time, in fact i believe on this day a year ago(April 21st, maybe teh14th 2001) When i rushed onto einstein and grab a piece of the playing field (one of the small barsright by the bridge) after we won nationals.

life couldnt be better.................

Justin 188 23-04-2002 01:37

April 6th 2002, at the inaugural Canadian Regional when my team won the Chairman's Award.

I jumped right out of my seat and over the boards :D

Another older memorable moment was in 1999 at the GLR, when we (team 188) were paired with Wildstang (111). We went crazy cheering, and even after that match we cheered madly during each others' matches. FURY-WILDSTANG!! FURY-WILDSTANG!! :D

Dave Hurt 23-04-2002 14:07

In '99 watching the match where Chiefdelphi and Wildstang went up against each other (Can't remember where it was at... I though it was at GLR but I don't think Wildstang was at GLR that year.) Both rushed out to grab a pole on the puck, and it just went from there. I don't remember what happened to the other 2 bots, but I'm pretty sure they just cleared out as the puck went flying around the floor. For those of you who wern't around them, both teams had swerve drive, and the puck just spun around going from end to end of the field. It was pretty darn cool :D

But as for a memory from my team... it would have to be playing against the Husky Brigade at the semi-finals at GLR in 2000. We both set our sights on the black ball from their side. The match started and we both shot out to get it, us having to go over the ramp at full speed and they went under the goal. We ended up getting there about the same time and had a massive crash. We snapped an axle in the process, and they bent thier frame... but I don't remember who came away with the ball... but I remember Ken coming by after the match and laughed as we shook hands, telling us about how they had to beat their frame back into shape.
