I think that the original Star Wars trilogy bests the Lord of the Rings anyday, simply because it was so innovative, and it has changed the way that we see movies to day. Lord of the Rings wouldn't have been possible without the techniques pioneered by George Lucas in the Star Wars Trilogy.

I'm in the class of too close to decide.

As movies go:

Episodes IV - VI > LOTR > Episode III

Episodes I-II count as bloopers -_-.

As literature goes, you guys have to realize that you won't understand LOTR movies until you read LOTR books, including the ultra-long Silmarillion. There is so much there that you can't get from a film.

So with books, LOTR tops Star Wars with immense ease.

Even though I haven't seen all of the movies in completion, Star Wars beats Lord of the Rings just due to the fact that it spawned one of the greatest cultural revolutions that America has ever seen. No movie that I know of has ever cause so many people dress up in $100+ costumes, fight with light sabers, and wait days, even months in line for its release in theatres. No contest whatsoever.

Let's see... Anakin, Luke, or Legolas? :ahh: I have to go with Star Wars for a better plot, but LotR has more hot guys (>.> My feminism is showing) + more sword fighting headlopping off... Good battle scenes. Plus I'm a history geek and LotR is pretty acurate for Midieval Fantasy. -nodnod-

LOTR is far far superior due to a better script and acting. Star Wars by comparison is childish.

The LOTR series are definetly way to long to watch. It makes me cry at night.

LOTR is better than Star Wars becuase of the quality in the script and plot. It was much more thought out. The acting was better too. Just my opinion.

You don't need to read the books to get the movies, but it sure does help.

I've read 2/3 of the trilogy, and The Hobbit, and surprisingly, I actually like the movies more. Probably because I saw them first though.

The books were much too descriptive. It doesn't take 5 pages to describe a man coming over a hill and singing.

But anyways, I liked LOTR better than Star Wars. So maybe Star Wars was the first to use the technology.. but out of the recent films, LOTR utilized it way better.

Can I just say that both are pretty good?

The Lightsaber duels are wicked (especially in the prequels) but I also go head over heals for the chivalry and Medieval culture in LotR.

LOTR is so totally defnitely better. really. i mean, dont get me wrong, i do love star wars (i havent watched revenge of the sith yet! aaaaa! i am watching it next thursday, after my last final exam, at the 7:20 showing :D ) but LOTR beats it out totally. i still remember, when FOTR came out i was like 'meh' cuz i had seen the animated version and i hated it because it sucked, and i didnt really want to go watch it (my dad was really enthu though), but my mom was like 'anj clean your room' so it came down to clean my room with mom or go to FOTR with dad and i obviously took FOTR and i took a friend and we were both wowed. and i have been a die-hard fan ever since. it also helps that my sixth grade self had a crush on orlando bloom :D

crap, do you know how HARD it is to decide betwwen those series?!!?!?!?! okay, star wars has what, 6 movies out, LOTR has 3, (comngi out with another!) so, come on, they are so hard to choose between! i mean, come on, have you ever read the books!?!?!? and the comics?!?!?!? crazy, insane, sicks, sexxi plots, characters, and stories!!!!
