Pistons or Spurs?

The NBA finals are set. It's the defending champion Detroit Pistons against the San Antonio Spurs. The Pistons just got off a 7-game battle with the Miami Heat and the Spurs have been resting up after sweeping their previous opponent.

Thus, the only question that remains unanswered is: who will win?

But maybe that's just because I am a pacers fan and i don't particularly like the pistons.

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

I have to go with the hometown DETROIT PISTONS. In comparing position by position it is a interesting match up.

Guards Tony Parker/Brent Barry/Manu Ginobli
Chauncey Billups/Rip Hamilton/Lindsey Hunter
Detroit has the edge with arguably the best player that nobody knows in Billups, though Ginobli is a very close second. Hunter is the one of the best on ball players in the league and will cause major trouble for the spurs. I Will pick Detroit here

Forwards Tim Duncan/ Bruce bowen/ Nazr Mohammed
Ben Wallace/ Rasheed Wallace/Tayshaun Prince
San Antonio has the best player in the series with Duncan. Bruce Bowen is also one of the best on ball defenders so he is another plus. The thing is that both Wallace's and Prince combine to make arguably the most formidable front line so I am going to pick them and their length. (they are really tall)

Bench San Antonio
Detroit
Here is where both teams shine. They both have incredibly deep benches with every player on San Antonio playing in the playoffs. I will have to go with San Antonio for this one just because they all can play.

Coaching Greg Popovich
Larry Brown
This is the most interesting match up of all. The two coaches of the USA basketball team at the last Olympics. Larry has already lead Detroit to the championship last year and thereby solidifying his place on the list of greatest coaches of all time. In this battle you can't stop Larry Brown and the pistons.

So in conclusion i think the pistons will win in 6 games.

Man I have way to much free time

well for one they didn't sweep the suns they beat them in five.

I think that the Pistons will win in 6 or 7 depending if Ben decideds to show up or not. If he does then we win in 6. If not we win in 7. Yes the spurs have Duncan, Ginobli, and Parker. and yes they also have Horry and Barry, but we have Sheed, Prince, and, and Rip. They say that Bowen will shut down Rip.....now Wade is much faster then Bowen right? right... he couldn't even shut down Rip. What makes you think that some one not half as talented as Wade will shut down someone that Wade himself couldn't handle. Duncan is like Shaq...he is going to get his, and so is Ginobli. but, and this is a big but, you can stop them. they aren't 7'1" 380 lbs. yes Ginoblis fast and yes Duncan has a stroke and is wet from every were, but if they can shut down Shaq and Wade then they can shut them down.

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

It's not whether or not Ben will show up...he showed up against the heat, but he was blocking someone a foot taller and 100 lbs heavier than him. The fact that he did that and still had a game with 13 rebounds and another with 5 blocks shows a lot.

The Pistons match up much better with the Spurs than they did with the heat....the teams are pretty much playing themselves.

I'd like to see Pistons in 5 so they win it at home(when I'm there), but if that can't happen, Pistons in 6.

1 - Pistons
2 - Spurs
3 - Pistons
4 - Spurs
5 - Pistons
6 - Pistons

PS. Ron Artest couldn't stop Rip last year, and he was the DPOY....Bruce Bowen isn't going to this year.

Okay, the Suns are an amazing team with no playoff experienc. That was no biggy for the Spurs to win even in 5. Detroit beat th most dominant team in the NBA. I don't care if the Suns won more, the Heat were more dominant. Detroit will win.

Plus I hate Tim Duncan. Sorry guys.

Ouch :p

At any rate, 1st quarter of the 1st game's just finished. There's been some nice playing on each team's behalf. The Spurs appear to be having a bit of trouble passing because the Pistons have been keeping them on their toes... And statistically they've had more turnovers (4 in 4 minutes). Nonetheless, I think this game will be a close one, the Spurs are putting up a good fight.

I say Pistons in 7.

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

After game 1, it was obvious that the Pistons had lost a majority of the momentum they had in the first two quarters. I think much of this would be due to the fact that the Spurs have had quite a few more days off, not that I'm trying to make an excuse for the Pistons or anything, but they did. By second half, there was no energy left.

The Pistons still have the motivation. If they can pull off a defense like they had in the first half yesterday for the next game, they're good to go, because that defense is just about the best out there.

And I'm not going to say anything about officiating, lest I get sued $20,000 by the NBA :p

I still stand by Pistons in 7.

Ms.Demeanor 10-06-2005 20:59

Psh, Pistons all the way.

Both teams are good defensively, so it will be a close playoff series, that's for sure. The Pistons are gonna get it though.

Anywho, definitely watch the officiating, and critique it. That alone may help unravel why the series turns out the way it will. It may just have last time for the Pistons. You never know.

Hey now... *smacks upside head* :p

Yes, Pistons are getting outdone in every single area possible. Yes, the announcer called the Spurs a team and the Pistons a group of individuals. Yes, we're down by... uh... many points :ahh:

They've come back from this far a deficit before though, so we'll see...

santosh 13-06-2005 00:10

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

Are those ref's blind? That is one of the worst displays of officiating I have seen in a while. Not just this game but Game 1 too. Maybe it is just me, but I fl that it was horrendous.

xzvrw2 13-06-2005 08:36

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

The officiating has been bad both last series and this one.

The Pistons gave up before the series started. Obi-Wan Ginolbli is unstoppable, Duncan don't care any more so hes only scoreing 18, they are making Horry look like Jordan, Parker is looking like a god, They are making Bowen look like the best thing since sliced bread, and they played Arroyo when they brought the lead down to 8-that deffinatly means they don't want to win this year. When McDyess is our leading scorer then we know we are going to lose. When we take out our startes and put in Ham, Darko, Dupree, Arroyo, and McDyesse, all at the same time, then you know we gave up. It is over for the Pistons. Spurs in 6.

Lisa Perez 15-06-2005 10:55

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

Now last night's game was an example of the Pistons regaining their defensive strength (I knew they still had it in them! :p) - complete role reversal from game 2 in my opinion. In game 2, Pistons lost their momentum by the 2nd quarter; in game 3, Spurs lost their momentum by the 3rd quarter.

With who knows how many steals, the Pistons altered their strategy so as to keep the Spurs on their toes. And the Pistons actually worked as a team this time, passing was excellent, I couldn't find many places to complain... and I complain a lot.

As long as the Pistons keep doing this, I still think they take the series. They work extremely well under pressure, and best demonstrated that in last night's game.

DEEEEEEEEETROIT BASKETBALL!

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

In my opinion, Last nights game was the crucial game of the series. With Detroit having this much momentum (31 pts worth), it will be near impossible to beat them at home again. So, with Detroit on a possible 3 game winning streak going in to San Antonio, I don't think they will be be beaten. It happened to the Spurs last year against the Lakers, and it is happening again.

Personally I would have liked to see the finals as a 2,2,1,1,1 format.

Why is everyone hateing on the Pistons? Because they are good? Because they got to the finals with no kind of bench? Just get over the fact that they will win. And as for the honor of ron artest thing...he's the one that put it on hmself. He's the one that lost his temper. If he didn't rush into the stands the only thing that would have happened is that that guy would have gotten banned from the palace and artest could have got him on assult and battery, Artest would have never got suspended for the season. Get over the fact that your team isn't in there and holding a grudge against th Pistons because they put them out. the Pistons are a better team then the Pacers, 76ers, and the Heat. Get over it. Come back next year. I hate it when people in Detroit are hating on the Pistons. Yes I am guilty of doughting them, thats only because i thought that the spurs were a beter team. But now I realized that they are not, I hold the pistons with the most respect. So get over the fact that the pistons beat your team or some of you players took it upon themselves to start a fight with a fan. Thank you

Wow. Amazing win last night. I'm not gonna lie, by the end of the 1st quarter I thought the Spurs had the Pistons beat in pretty much every way (I had to leave the room with the TV, too much anxiety :p). But the Pistons came back as they've done plenty a-time in the past, again proving how good they are when behind in a series. From what I saw after the game (yes, I finally went back and watched), they made plenty of huge shots where it counted.

It'll definitely be crazy to see what Game 7 brings, I'm looking forward to it.

I think that the Spurs were thinking that they thought that they had game six in the bag, so when the Pistons won they got all discombobulated and are going to be wondering why they lost. They are going to be so discombobulated that they will lose game seven. Thats my theroy.

I agree 100% with that theory. Considering that the folks down in San Antonio were 'planning' to have a parade on Thursday, I think the loss was well deserved.

Game 7: Pistons will win by a landslide victory like that on Game 4 of this series and Game 5 of last year's NBA finals when Detroit obliterated the Lakers in the Championship winning game. It's just in their nature. Heh heh heh :D

xzvrw2 22-06-2005 12:35

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

I was just talking to my dad and he brought up the point about the shock of the Pistons winning game three. The Spurs were discombobulated and they went and lost game 4. But they came back and won game 5. But then i told him that after the initial shock of the Pistons winning game three it took the Spurs 2 games to counteract what the Pistons changed. Well the Pistons shocked the Spurs again. The spurs will need a game to counteract the Pistons change. Therefore the Pistons winning game seven. The Pistons win the 'ship.

Then again, the Spurs have lost 6 times all season in that building (3 in the regular season, and 3 in the playoffs) -- once to the Nuggets (4/24), Suns (5/30), and Detroit (6/21), ....Detroit winning once there was pretty amazing, and its going to take a heck of a lot to do it again since San Antonio is 3-0 in playoff games (and 5-0 overall) in a home game after losing at home. If you want to play the statistics game, San Antonio *should* come out on top.

Re: Pistons or Spurs?

With Larry Brown, anything is possible. and adding to xzvrw2's post, the point about being shocked. They must be evn more shocked that they lost at home. But there are 2 sides to every story. I don't think the Spurs played their hardest. They looke at it like "We have 2 games to win just 1". But that is just what I think. all in all, Pistons win by a range of 6-12

There is four reasons why they lost last night and i put them all for 25% of the blame:
1. they forced almost every one of their shots
2. They didnt rebound nearly enough
3. The left them wide open all day from any where on the court
4. They were playing against two teams...The Spurs and the refs

Now you can't tell me that the refs were crap last night. When Duncan pushed Ben down when he Duncan gets the ball and they call a foul on Ben. Thats just bad. Or when Barry tripped over himself and they called it on Billups, you can't tell me that those refs need to learn how to ref again.

Each point is sort of on. The first half they played amazing with foul trouble. But when tthe second half started they were a different team. Those four things really were apparent in the fourth as the game was ending. The Spurs got three wide open threes. Billups had one of his blocked and the spurs just attacked with more hunger. The refs did a horrible job they let San Antonio play but Detroit couldn't sneeze without a foul. I have a theroy on why they came out differently, Larry Brown told them this is his last game! That crushed them and they couldn't play as a result of it.

1. True
2. True
3. [Edit] True [/Edit]
4. Very True

However, most of this came in the latter portion of the 4th quarter. Up till then, it was a neck to neck battle, waiting for someone to fall apart. Unfortunately, it was a Pistons.
