Re: VEX Tournament at IRI!

I don't know if it was clarified but teams of adults and teams of students are BOTH allowed to register. This is a chance for kids to beat up on their mentors or for mentors to get revenge on the kids.

Having only ONE Vex kit to build a robot will even the playing field for the average high school kid to competitively compete against even the most veteran engineer.

Re: VEX Tournament at IRI!

Vex at IRI is gonna be sweet.

We've got a game that has already been tested, and you can compete with only 1 Vex kit. There will be teams of crusty FIRST veterans and teams who don't know what FIRST is. Students and adults will be competing... anyone can sign up! (pssst... it is a fairly simple game, not as complex as FIRST's Vex Challenge in Atlanta)

For those of you who have attended the IRI at Lawrence North HS (in Indy), the Vex field and pits will be held in the auxilliary gym. 50 FIRST team pits will be around the perimeter of the gym, on the rubber flooring, while the Vex field and pits will be located on the basketball court in the middle of the gym. So, if you have one of these 50 FIRST pits, you could see your Vex team competing about 50 feet away.

It is great to see Team Roboto step up and create this game. Rufus and Scotty have put in a load of work to develop and test the game, organize the event, and get it ready for IRI.

So, students, parents, mentors, teachers... get your team together, check out the VEX information, and sign up your team!

See ya in July!

Andy B.

I'll give a special something (I'm not sure what yet, maybe rep points) to anyone who makes a shifting two speed (two ratio) drive system on their vex bot for this competition. Raising and lowering or engaging and disngaging different wheel sets may be used as an alternative to actually switching gears.

I want to see it done, so I'll offer a little incentive for it.

Re: VEX Tournament at IRI!

Is there an actual photograph of a real field available?

rufu5 11-07-2005 01:16

Re: VEX Tournament at IRI!

No, I don't have a pic of the real field yet, I will get one up soon though.

Also, I have been getting many e-mails about rules and clarifications, so I will use this thread to post the Q&A:

vex q&a

What is the playing field surface? : carpet

Is loctite allowed? : yes, this will be the ONLY out of kit part allowed (this means no lubricants or ANY other fasteners)

Are you allowed to climb/scale/attach to the wall?
: the only set of rules on the wall say you cant force the doors open, the rest is up to you

Is the field perimeter grating (like the two divider walls)? : no, it will be a 2 inch high piece of wood

Is intentional tipping or damaging of an opponent's robot disallowed? : yes

Is intentionally or unintentionally removing an opponent's balls from the playing field illegal? : Yes, but removing a ball from a scoring conic is not illegal

Are Ni-cad batteries allowed? : Ni-cad batteries in the vex battery harness or vex batter packs are both allowed

Remember everyone, REGISTRATION IS STILL OPEN!! get in while you still can!

rufu5 19-07-2005 06:34

Re: VEX Tournament at IRI!

here is the second part of the Q&A:

What materials are being used for the scoring conics? : The scoring conics will be made of fiber glass, with a rough surface texture.

Is there a lip where the conic meets the floor, or will the slop of the conic directly take off from the floor? : The bottom of the conics will directly take off from the floor, there will be no lip.

Are wires ties being used on the top of the conic to hold the outer shell to the internal cyllinder? : No. The entire conic will be one piece.

What things on the playing field do you foresee the robots getting stuck on? : There is a potential for robots to get stuck anywhere the flat playing surface is elevated (ie goals, balls, etc).

Will the balls drop into the hole at the top of the conic, or is there a flat surface or depression for the balls to set upon? : The hole in all the conics continues all the way to the floor.

If the balls drop into the hole, is the hole as deep as the conic is tall? : yes

Can a team bring more than one robot to cempete? : Yes, but it needs to be registared as a seperate team.

Does the "coach" have to be an adult, or can two students go into the control area during the competition? : The driver and coach can be students, adults, or a mix of both.

Will hte VEX competition occur on Friday or Saturday? What time?
: The competition will be both days. Attached below is a schedule for the IRI and VEX.

Is there a schedule for IRI? : Attached below is a schedule for the IRI and VEX.

Does the playing field have any obstructions on the lower edge of the gate opening, or is the gate opening level with the playing field? Looking at the jpg, it appears that either the whole surface is elevated (like on a 2x6 platform), or there is a small wall the robots must go over. : The lower edgge of the gate opening is level with the playing field, there is no obstical inside of the gate door.

IRI/VEX Schedule
