A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
OK, my major e-mail address is now my gmail address. Now I was sitting back and thinking: "Man, this gmail thing is sweet, 2gbs of storage, any @gmail.com that you want ..." (and he did speak at nationals :D )
And then it hit me! Have you ever been sitting back and said: "Man I want to get in touch with team xxxx, but I just don't know what e-mail to use, which person I need to talk to, and their website is down or doesn't have a contact list!" Well I have a solution! Say you want to get in contact with the FIRST team 447 (my team, lol) 447.FIRST@gmail.com every team, simply takes 5 minutes and makes a (team number)(period)FIRST@gmail.com and it goes on for FLL and VEX too xxxx.FLL@gmail.com xxxx.VEX@gmail.com team leaders can use the AMAZING gmail notifier http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-help...x?promo=gdl-en (I had already made 447.FIRST, thats why i said that and not 447.FRC) IF ANYONE WANTS AN INVITE, SO THEY CAN MAKE THEIR TEAM A GMAIL ACCOUNT, just post here (to move this up, so more people can see it) and send me an e-mail at 447.FIRST@gmail.com |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
That's a really cool idea!
And you easily have it forward to the leader's email address too ~Stephanie Team 1351 ps- i <3 google and gmail rocks! smschmit@gmail.com & any other ones i feel like making with my 90 invites. need one? [edit] THAT WAS MY 100TH POST!!! [/edit] |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
yeah I guess I'll help with the invite thing
xiagox@gmail.com by the way already got 1597.FIRST@gmail.com and 039.VEX@gmail.com for my team :D * While making the account for my vex team I noticed the user name (i.e. 39.vex@gmail.com) cant be less than 6 characters long (they might not count the period (.) ) So I made it 039.vex@gmail.com and I think (for simplicity) all VEX or FLL teams that have less than 3 digits should follow the same format, so anyone can remember how to contact you ;) * |

I'll help out with the GMail invites, as well. Each account only has 50 invites, so if you or your team would like an invitation to create a GMail account, e-mail me at: lindsay.quyle@gmail.com
Great idea, Rufus! :D |

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
Excellent Idea. Gmail is a great tool.
We also use a gmail account for a workspace for the mentors on our team. We have discussions by reading and replying to the threaded emails. We save and share documents this way also. Good Stuff  |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
Interesting idea.
If you happen to be the team leader, but already have Gmail, don't forget you can have emails forwarded! See my sig if you need an invite. |

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
well i was thinking, we may have a great format. But we don't have anyway of archiving them on one easy to use page. So I created....
First Gmail Network-A Google Group Now any team that has one can join the group. When you feel like it you can browse the member list and you got a contact on a bunch of teams. The more teams we have, the easier it will be to find that team you've been trying to contact, so if you haven't yet, Make one! |

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
It's funny this comes up. Next season I am having all of my students create & use g-mail as their robotics team e-mail. Each student will have an e-mail of student340@gmail.com, maybe I will change it to student.340.FIRST@gmail.com. Many of the students have already gotten on board so I probably won't. Oddly I still need to create one like that myself. I have been using g-mail for the better part of 6 months & I have found it better than any other public e-mail system out there.
To continue on with this thread I will create 340.FIRST@gmail.com right now. This really is a great idea as long as somebody checks the team e-mail. Nice thinking ... 340.FIRST@gmail.com is now created & so is jrees340@gmail.com. both are linked so there is no need to send to both. Again great idea, now it's time to look into a google group account for the team. I will have to compare it to our team's yahoo group account. |

I'll have to talk to our student leader when she comes back before i make one of these, but it sounds like a really good idea if you want other teams to be able to get ahold of you. And i have noticed that Gmail is a good Email service, though i use msn the most personally.

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
As much as we'd like to think it, every FIRST team doesn't read Chief Delphi. If the logic behind this Gmail system is sound (and I think it is), perhaps someone "in the know" could contact FIRST and ask them to send out an email blast to all teams suggesting they set up an address using this new format? As previously suggested by many, each team leader could then simply set up a mail forward to their preferred email address through the Gmail settings. Those who did not want to open themselves up to contact from other teams could simply choose not to participate, although I hope there wouldn't be too many people who picked this option.
I only suggest this because access to the Team Contact database through TIMS was removed this past season, I believe due to privacy reasons - some people didn't want their private emails shared with others. Instituting the Gmail solution provides a nice, safe buffer to protect their true email addys from any malicious evildoers, and it makes it much easier and faster for people to contact representatives on other teams (a very important aspect of organizing something like a pre-ship scrimmage, an event we stage every year in February). Please FIRST, spread the word so inter-team communication can be improved. In an era where FIRST is decentralizing their administrative duties and spreading them to a regional level, having a tool like this could only help the regional staffs improve communication to their local teams. Perhaps this will help improve awareness and attendance at events like the team forums, which many teams did not even know about? |

Of course Google and FIRST are now good buddies so I'm sure a Gmail-based communications system would be a positive-PR bonanza for both. :) |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
Quote:
The other problem I see with this Gmail setup is that you don't really know who's on the other end. Is it the team admin and/or someone who can "speak" for the team? Nothing against any of you who have created the accounts here, but if I had something important to communicate to a team I don't think I'd trust this method to work. How do you even know that if you contact "2175.FIRST@gmail.com" and it goes through that it really is someone from team 2175, and not someone else trying to cause trouble (just because you wouldn't do this doesn't mean someone else won't). Expanding on Brandon's idea, I think it'd be neat to have a URL redirector, so that http://team111.frc.usfirst.org would redirect to 111's web page. That would make it easy to find any team's website (as long as they registered it with FIRST), AND you could use it for the email forwarder (admin@team111.frc.usfirst.org). This way, the service could also "fail gracefully" when the information isn't available. Team 2175 hasn't registered their website? Then http://team2175.frc.usfirst.org displays a nice "We're sorry, but this team has not registered their website." message. Same thing for email: anything sent to admin@team2175.frc.usfirst.org would be returned, perhaps with any other relevant information "This team has not registered an admin email address, but they have provided a website available at http://team2175.frc.usfirst.org." |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
Well based on Dave and Brandon's comments, having FIRST set up their own team email solution would be ideal, but it would require FIRST to take further action on their own. Who can find out if this is something they'd be willing to do for the community? I think this is a badly-needed service. I think if FIRST came through for us, you'd see everyone unquestionably adopt their new system, but without such a system in place, you're going to continue to see these "home-grown" ideas appear on Chief Delphi. Lacking any other viable alternative, it's great to see people suggesting their ideas for improving communication within the community.
|
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
While having FIRST come in and hold our hands for us sounds great, the GMAIL solution I have proposed leaves it up for the teams to create this network for themselves. A "home grown" solution such as this happens in every facet of industry, and with a little nudge, takes off and becomes a standard.
This method of communication would be for general contact between teams, such as getting a head engineers contact information, asking general questions, or getting in contact with other students you meet during competition. You wouldn't be sending super secret encoded robot schematics. I know there is a chance for "e-mail stealing" but its a necessary risk, in my opinion, to overcome this "contact gap" that we have now. I would love it if someone with "high up" connections in FIRST could get them to send an e-mail blast urging teams to join this network to stream-line team to team communication. I don't know what the "TIMS" system was, but it didn't seem to work, considering its gone now. I would really like to know more about it so we don't make the same mistake that it did. And this is what FIRST is all about as well: High school students coming up with ideas that help out entire groups of people, while not relying on adults or engineers to come up with the ideas for them. |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
Quote:
TIMS stands for "Team Information Management System". This is the primary interface team leaders use when creating new teams, registering for regionals and the championship, updating team contact information, etc. TIMS used to have a feature which allowed team leaders to look up the contact information of other team leaders, but that feature has been discontinued. An email system like the one you are suggesting would go a long way toward restoring that capability, and then some. |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL

Someone posted earlier, I believe, that that section was taken down because of privacy issues. The Gmail system wouldn't have that problem and like you said earlier: "Instituting the Gmail solution provides a nice, safe buffer to protect their true email addys from any malicious evildoers, and it makes it much easier and faster for people to contact representatives on other teams." Gmail Will Prevail! |

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
I have a gmail account but I rarely use it (the point being that I wanted some easy way to check my e-mail at work, but gmail seems to barf on UNIX browsers). How does one give out invites? I'd be willing to provide some.
As for my team joining in, I'd be more than happy to create the account, but I'd like to clear it with the student leads or faculty advisor first. This is a great idea, whether FIRST does it or it is done through GMail. A while ago we wanted to contact team 348 but didn't have any contacts. It would have been much easier if we'd just been able to send to a central e-mail address that we automatically knew was theirs? |

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
This seems like a good place to post something like this...
I have a Gmail account and my invites are languishing un-used, so I whipped up this little page: http://www.davedelong.com/php/gmail.php Basically, you type in your email address, and you automatically get a GMail invitation. I keep a basic log of IP addresses and emails to prevent people from taking all of the invitations, but that won't stop some of the more determined people. So yeah.... free invitations, either for yourself or for this nifty FIRST networking idea.... Enjoy! Dave |

If you don't want to have the whole "blacklist" stuff, well then hopefully you know enough PHP to comment that out. I apologize for the coding style... I wanted to get the page up quickly and so my coding style may be a bit shoddy. Enjoy! Dave |

Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
The gmail notifier is good, and forwarding is a great idea, too.
Another useful thing that Ximian Evolution or Thunderbird (or Outlook >shudder<) aficionados can put to good use is the POP capability. To use, log in to gmail, go to settings, and then the Forwarding and POP tab. And just as the name demonstrates, this is also how to set up forwarding. The instructions from Google make setting up your POP/SMTP client setup a breeze! |
Re: A networking idea for FIRST teams through GMAIL
I think that its great but I was thinking once everyone has a gmail account for they team, we put a list of all the teams that have one on one post or when can separate it from each state, so we contact teams in our areas.

This is my idea Team Name and State or Country, and your team's Gmail I will start the list. ERV, NJ: 204.FIRST@gmail.com Then the next team will put they team name and what country or state your from and then your team's gmail contact so that way we could have a continuous list. |
