You know who I am?!
Just because I'm bored and curious :)
Have you ever found out somebody in FIRST knew who you were that you didn't expect to know you? Or someone who knew who you were but you didn't expect them to recognize you? I had a few interesting experiences in Atlanta this year with that. First off, I went to the webhug and I found Brandon Martus and JVN standing together talking, my jaw nearly hit the grass when John greeted me with "Hey it's Matt Krass!", John can attest to me stuttering "Y-you know who I am?". Just wondering if anyone else had an experience like that. Oh, Andy Baker also recognized me, but he saw me briefly in 2003, so I'm not sure if it counts. Next on my list, get Dave Lavery to recognize me ;-) *runs off to spam Dave with photos of me in anticipation of next season*. Me? Goofy?....yep! So? P.S. How many people on these forums see my posts and go "Oh I know him.." ? |
Re: You know who I am?!
At New Hampshire this year Greg Perkins stops by my team's pit to say hi, it took me a second to realize who it was.

Re: You know who I am?!
yeah... i was on tv because of an interview @ Palmetto...so ppl were like i know you..you were the S.P.A.M. girl on tv... i didn't know it was aired..so i was at first a bit freaked out...then someone explained it to me
a few ppl on cd have regonized me too and friends on chats that i never met... it's a crazy but cool world we live in and FIRST just makes it better because of the people we met!! :D |
Re: You know who I am?!
I recognized Kristina Doan a couple years back at either the LA regional or the SCRRF scrimmage, I can't remember which, nonetheless she was quite surprised. And I also recognized Bill Gold and Cory at the SVR regional this past year and said hi.
On a few occassions I've had people come by the pit asking for "sanddrag" because they really wanted to find out who the heck I was. |
Re: You know who I am?!
I was surprised at the number of people who recognized me in the pits this year. It was probably about 7 people. Forgive me, I can't remember a single one. :p

Re: You know who I am?!
At the web hug i was stading next to Ken Patton and JVN was like so this is The Stevie.

Re: You know who I am?!
Yeah I was very surprised when Andy Baker came to my team's pit and stopped to say hi at the Las Vegas Regional.
And sanddrag, you need to post a WAI pic sometime, you're probably the most well-known person on here without one. |
Re: You know who I am?!
My freshman year (2001) I was very surprised when, at Nationals, Joe Ross knew who I was. I'd only been posting on Chief Delphi for 5 months (and not very often, either!)
To this day, I still feel bad not knowing who he was!! :o |
Re: You know who I am?!
I would like to share this one story even though there are many more.
... 2005 championship, 3 days passed by and came to the night of social. I was hanging out with my friends (neha, barry, genia, dori, jess, bharat, vishal, team 25, 237, 217, 173 crew). A guy just came up to me and said hi. I was totally confuse. I was carrying on the conversation as well as thinking who this might be. Infact, he wasn't the first one to come up to me and say hi even though I didn't know him. Anyways, we were having a very good conversation about robots in general. and now to this day that guy has been talking to me here and there, giving me ideas and became a good friend of mine. Thank you Ryan Foley. You can only gain friends in FIRST. :) |

After ~6.5 years in the FIRST community I still find it strange when people say hi to me or recognize me at a competition. I don't think I'm a memorable or meeting-worthy person. |
Re: You know who I am?!
I was introduced to Dave Lavery and I explained who I was, and he said 'I know who you are.' I was like O_O really?! It was so cool, 'cause I love Dave Lavery. It was too awesome to bear.
My buddy Franchesca on here (aka Nadia) came to my pit in Atlanta, and I had no idea who she was since I never saw a picture. She had to tell me who she was. I was so embarrassed. But yeah at first I thought she was just another CDer coming up to me that I didn't know. It was so horrid, I felt so bad. |

Re: You know who I am?!
Although there were tons of people this year in Atlanta that introduced themselves (I was amazed at the sheer volume of Snickers that were passed out), there's one story that sticks out in my FIRST career.
At the 2004 IRI, I was helping out with the Talent Show. I had asked a crew of wise guys, plus the very sweet Kyle Hughes, to serve as judges... but I got an email back saying that Kyle had to decline, because they weren't attending. I tried to think of another person whom I could get to serve on my panel, someone who would be a crowd favorite. As I was standing there trying to figure it out, I saw Ken Patton, and knew I had found my judge. I had never spoken to him before, just knew him through WFA and 65 fame, and I was pretty intimidated. I came up and said, 'Hi, Mr. Patton?' to which he said, 'Hey Amanda, what's up?' Holy knocked off my feet, Batman. Ken Patton knew who I was, and knew my name! (He also jumped up and down, giddy when I told him he could be a judge!) That was probably one of the coolest WOW! moments of mine in FIRST. |
Re: You know who I am?!
i was suprised at nyc when about 4 people came over and said hi... mostly on the first day lol I think i scared them away because i was stupidly tired still from the jetlag lol...

Re: You know who I am?!
I haven't had too many people surprise me like that, but I did have something happen that was kinda the opposite, at Atlanta last year (2004). I was standing outside the door to the Hard Rock Cafe, downtown, where I was going to meet a bunch of other CD members, and Cory walked right by me without recognizing me, though I recognized him. He was walking in the door, obviously looking for me, and I said "Are you looking for someone?"
Other than that, I don't have too many stories. Usually when I meet someone at a FIRST event, it's someone I've talked to online, and I'm just meeting them in person. I was mildly surprised when Andy Baker knew who I was at Cleveland in 2002, but I had posted asking for a Chiapua gear on here, so he had a bit of a tip-off that it was me, when I came asking for one ;) |

Re: You know who I am?!
At SVR in '04 my team had allied with 258 for the finals. Being "Safety Captain" I was allowed to hang with the drive team...
I forget what the conversation was, but one of the Sea Dawgs said my name to get my attention. This really surprised me since I hadn't introduced myself yet...turns out it was Bill Gold... |
Re: You know who I am?!
I remember this night. Oh the good times....
here is the picture from it...Picture Well...a few people knew me here, but honestly, I don't remember who they were, but I think I can name everyone in that picture now. |
Re: You know who I am?!
A few years ago I met Paul Copiolli at Cal games, back when I didnt know anything (as in was really young). I had no idea who he was, but I was introduced to him. He looked young, so I thought he was some college student that used to be on a local team. It was wierd and cool, we talked for drive train stuff for like 5 minutes, and then we both went our ways. A few days later I decided to look him up on CD. Wow did I feel dumb afterwards... :P
And I still have not met Andy Baker. At least I saw Dr. Joe at Silicon Valley regional last year... he was cool. Heck, all of team 47 was cool. |
Re: You know who I am?!
I've had TONS of people say stuff to me and I would be like....uh ok who are you? and they would tell me and I would be like HOLY COW!!!!! But I would say I am pretty notorious for doing this to people...so if your going to IRI and you post here...watch out!

Re: You know who I am?!
At SoCal this year, I was volunteering as real time scorekeeper. I saw Bill Gold being a ref (that is why volunteer badges are so cool), so I said hi. I told him I was DanielBCR and he said "I know you". That made me happy, because I don't consider myself very well known. We ended up seing each other again at championships.
