I think the point of the story was to illustrate just how powerless humans were against these things and just how lucky we were that something so simple as the common cold could bring the entire thing to a halt when the combined power of the earth's military forces could do nothing. The only reason we were spared was we were lucky enough to have inhabited this world for thousands of years and had therefore "earned" the right to live here (although the armed fight over the minivan makes you wonder - naturalistic survival tendencies aside, humans like to revel in violent arguments over such petty things on a daily basis - can't we all just get along?).

You'd certainly think, however, that a technologically-advanced Martian (or whatever) species would have taken indigenous pathogens and diseases into account during their lengthy study of the earth and its people prior to the attack. I'm sure they had to deal with their own strains of sicknesses back on their homeworld. But that's not the way H.G. Wells laid it out.

Yeah but that's how the story ended in the original. The aliens die of the common cold. The end.Another part of the story. I need to read the whole story again but the family does survive intact their too.

I thought the movie was an example of fantastic sound effects.

But that was about it.

Oh, and it really made me want to play half life 2 through again.

I saw the first showing at my movie theatre (though it was rather inadvertant) and I thought the movie was great. However annoying Racheal was, the acting was really superb. I really enjoyed the grenade scene because it showed how something so small could bring down something so big.

I loved the movie. Now it wasn't the scariest movie I have ever seen, but there was some times were I did jump a little bit. As for the ending, I was confuzed a little bit but then i realized how they were able to kill them. I thought that was awesome. And for those that think that this movie only has good sound effects....go watch Barney because this movie had it all. I give it two thumbs way up.

I love the everyman perspective of the movie and the intensity is great but the ending feels tacked on. My wife complained bitterly about it.

I just got back from seeing the movie, it was ok i guess. As previously stated there are some questions to be answered from the movie like robbies survival and such. Honestly i think i could have waited until it came out on HBO or something to see it. Oh well. . .

I thought it was good. Some scenes were a bit unrealistic, like when Ray and his kids seemed to be the only ones to escape from the attack in the water. Unfortunatly, I had already read some of the spoilers, so I knew how it was going to end. I was surprised that Robbie made it back home, I thought that he got blown up in the attack where he and his father seperated. It was cool, but like Brad said, we would have done better to wait till it was on tv for free.

It was a good movie inderpendantly but it doesn't follow the original to anything.... i dont remember bazookas and modern cars in the 1920s :o

The ending was a bit disappointing, although I do understand that that was not up to spielberg... but being a fan of tom cruise :D i thoroughly enjoyed the movie!!! (although i don't think i'll be watching it again for a while) lol...i would recommend it to any sci-fi lover!

I enjoyed this movie very much. I saw this about a month ago with some of my family (me being the only chick...Oye) The parts that needed to be suspenseful were suspenseful to the max, and the way it was put together was great.

Sure, some parts were unrealistic, like when Ray and his family got away from the water attack without being noticed, and how Robbie survived. But it was extremely well done. One of the most action- and suspense-filled movies I've seen.

I saw it with by friends a while ago and it was pretty thought provoking, like, what was the deal with those blood-root things? were they trying to terraform the earth? But I can see how the aliens could overlook the microbes etc, We humans can only see them with the help of microscopes and the like ourselves, If they're observing us from space, it'd be even harder for them to see 'em, on account of how far away they are. but anyway, The movie was awesome, and I can't wait to see it again...
