What is your summer project?

Being energetic FIRST students I am sure most of you just don't spend your summer doing nothing related to FIRST. I am trying to understand navigation systems better(programming aspect) for robots of our size and commercial vehicles. I am also working on a new website for my team. What are you upto?

Re: What is your summer project?

Hrrm. Not much actually. I wanted to build something but I just don't know what. The team was supposed to be designing robots to play the 2000 game but I don't think they are going to follow through with it.

I got a free lawnmower and I've been trying to get it to run well but without much success. Maybe I'll tear it down one day when it is cool enough outside.

I recently joined the Rose Float club at Cal Poly Pomona which meets every Saturday. I'm learning to weld (only arc/stick, ugg) and some other fun stuff. :)

I'm designing a navigation system for our '06 bot... and being lazy in general.

My summer project was Mayhem @ the Museum, an offseason event for Florida. It was a success.

...Next project, design cool things. :)

Re: What is your summer project?

Fun one-day project: replace the faucet in your bathroom sink. Just be sure to wear your safety glasses; you don't want that crud landing in your eyes!

Do it while family members are away, so they get a surprise. :D

Be sure to leak-test it before putting your tools away, or YOU might get the surprise.

Extras: Let the plumbing salesman show you the $84,000 bathtub.

Well, there's always the FIRST Contact Database. :)

I'm also working on my group's SI2005 project.

openFIRST - Mainly administrivia, some documentation updates, etc.

FIRST Blogs - I've got a few ideas left to implement for this one :-)

...and many other non-FIRST-related projects (mostly involving/with student governments at Queen's).

Building a powered cart with a fridge and a computer on it. Working with GT to prototype a crab drive. Working with GT to help design and possibly build a very large arm with a camera at the end of it.

I'm just milling out ideas for heatwave this coming season and writing them down and working them out. I've also been learning about some of the aspects of the robot as well as C and C# to start helping with programing this season.

Re: What is your summer project?

I am also working on a new cart for our robot, with seats that fold out so our team can relax while queuing ;). I am also working on a control box that can be integrated into the cart, so that doesn't take up space in our pit. overall, I am also trying to think of things that my whole team can do once we get back together that will keep our pit area cleaner and running smoother.

Me and 2 others took it into our hands to design and build a team cart, now that is a fun summer project.

as for the fridge and computer cart, what are you gonna run that thing on, the fridge would drain a robot (or even car battery) way too fast.

I am not to sure exactly all about the lectronics, but they are powering it up with a back up battery.
The fridge actually gets charged up by that and then runs for about 4 hours.

I never thought about seats that could slide out so that we can chill out on it. Do you have a pic of that?

How ar you doing that? Could you email me a drawing of the seats folding out and the controls integration?

my seats will basically be parts of my base box that fold up and then have legs that attach to them. I wanted to construct a fancy slide out seat that has a back rest but time and materials prevented me. I will send you some pictures as soon as I am finished with the cart.

oh, and the holder for the controls will be a shelf on the handle so we can place near the robot and use them to tether to the robot

Re: What is(are) your summer project(s)?

Probably have way too many summer projects, but oh well.

Here's my list:
1. Complete biosensor control of 2005 robot (for biorobotics class at RIT)
2. Heading up This
3. Writing "How to build power rookie teams"
4. Professional World of Business Series
5. Helping add more content to our website
6. Recruiting
7. Our Team Handbook

If only I had 48 hours in a day... I could sleep for 8(instead of 4), work for 8-10(plus commuting for 2), do FIRST for 18-20 hours and still have time for 10 hours of real life :)

Re: What is your summer project?

SUMMER = vacation away from FIRST so I don't burn-out during the build/competition seasons:

- I had my first 20 minute flight ridge soaring a 500ft hill in a hang glider (now that takes skill!)
- swimming/boating with family
- hiking
- remembering a good friend who had lost his life two weeks ago :(
(life is short, live it well, luckily he did)
- rock climbing
- playing pinball and ski ball at lake beaches that haven't changed since the 50's
- telling my grandpa's wife's friend's son (who's 14) that he should join FIRST and gave him contact info of neighboring teams (he won a K'NEX design contest a few months ago, brilliant kid and really want's to do FIRST)
- appreciating friends
- appreciating family
- appreciating this wonderful life that has been awarded to me and making sure that, if I were to go, I don't regret not having done anything yet.
- Oh yea, taking two courses at NU (its Summester here) in these seven weeks.

I guess what I'm trying to say... its easy to get caught up in doing what will give you success, a high paying job, and a secure future. If you like technology, great, do it, but make sure there's a balance with any other interests you may have. That's what I use my summers for.

Weekend Warrior!!!!

Mwahaha... summer? Hm... playing DODGEBALL! Get a job... head of a program to teach our team programming. That's about it... and my g/f takes up a ton of my time too... so yeah... summer is almost done and I'll be waiting a year to go to college. Icky!

Re: What is your summer project?

well i dont know if i can compete with what erin just said, but heres my projects.....

1. hurry up and get ready to launch "...un named, inc". a joint venture between arefin bari and myself to make available drive trains to first teams that accept AndyMark transmissions, as well as Stock FIRST gearboxes. this may not launch till next summer, but dont give up faith!!

2. as quickly as possible, finish up my billion designs i have for mecanisms. *oh yea, the CVT that nobody has seen before ;) *

3. get my 1965 mustang, and start on that!!

although college starts again soon, i hope to accomplish at least one of these before i go back!

Re: What is your summer project?

My List is as follows:

1. Eagle Scout Project... sadly FIRST can't always be first.

2. phpMaid - an open source project I started last yr and will probably release later this yr.

3. I am going to be moving data from the rules I colleted by making FIRSTsearch into an archive on a mysql db

4. I will probably set it up so that other teams will be able to have FIRSTsearch on their team websites... Like how I allowed my team this year.

Re: What is your summer project?

Most of team 647's resources have been dedicated to Lego's this summer.
We started a class at our local Boys and Girls Club teaching Lego Mindstorms and in about 2 weeks we are holding a camp at our school for elementary and middle school students that attend our feeder schools who will have Lego league teams next year. Also the camp is one of our members eagle scout project.

I also have been doing some research about some new sensor's and programming.

Re: What is your summer project?

I myself have nothing FIRST-related planned for this summer. However, one of my friends and teammates is designing probably one of the coolest drive system ideas I have ever heard of. He is trying to make it possible for a robot to switch from crab steering to 2 wheel steering to 4 wheel steering to skid steering just by using something similar to a shifter on a car. Also, he wants to be able to use 2 or 4 wheel drive in skid, 2 wheel, and 4 wheel steering. If he pulls this thing off, I am sure we will want to have it on our robot this coming year. Unless... walking robots, anyone? Anyways, it would be one of the coolest drive systems I have ever seen since there would be 7 different drive and steering combinations one could use. Even if it does not make it onto a robot anytime soon, can you imagine a better training device for drivers to use year after year? I give many kudos to my friend for his awesome idea and dedication.

My project is to get at least ten hours of good music, released under a Creative Commons license, for The Capital Clash, which I'll be DJing for.

Currently, I'm at 39.8 minutes. This'll be a long two weeks.

A few people from my team (myself included) may design a crab drive or shifting tank... Otherwise, not too much FIRST related.
