It would take 148.45 cans of Mountain Dew to kill you.

So drinking a 12 pack of MD in one night is fine. . . :D

Re: caffeine calculator

Brad- I think that you'll be fine.

So- is that the amount of soda that you have to drink before you explode or something? Or is it the weight of that much soda’s that would crush you?

I know it says that it is the caffeine that would kill you, but I doubt that caffeine would really kill a person.

sure it will, your heart will just beat so fast it burns itself out (think fp motor.... only w/o the smell :p)

Re: caffeine calculator

I know i have drank more than 150 cans of md in the build season alone, so im guessing that you would have to slam 150 cans one after the other? You would get sick and or pass out long before you reach 150 cans.

it says i need 210.76 sunkist to die im glad i was only at 210 when i saw this post! :ahh:

Re: caffeine calculator

The LD50 (average lethal dose) of caffeine is 192mg/kg. Anywhere between 1 and 4 grams of pure caffeine can kill a human, so your pretty safe when drinking caffeine drinks but when you start getting into caffeine pills and stuff to keep you awake... then it gets dangerous.

sanddrag 30-07-2005 22:57

Re: caffeine calculator

I'm glad to hear it would take 480 cans of Coca Cola Classic to kill me. So, I pretty much never have to worry because it would probably take me over 3 months to drink that many.

I do assume that the "cans to kill" number is referring to a relatively short period right? (like <48 hrs)

Also, I saw one thing where this guy drank like 4 gallons of water in like 1hr and he went into a coma. Even too much of the ingredient that is essential for life can easily end your life.

EDIT: Hrrm, according to the calculator Pepsi is more "lethal" than Coke. Interesting.

It would take 235.65 cans of Dr Pepper to kill you.

*Phew* Guess I'm safe.

I wish they had Bawls on that list, though. I'd like to know how much of that I can safely take, considering that I'm pretty sure my friends and I have approached dangerous levels once or twice... (4 bottles at one day-long LAN party)

Re: caffeine calculator

For everyone's basic reference, and since I have way way way too much time on my hands...here's a lethality scale, based on a 150 lb. person and ranked from least lethal to most lethal. The number indicated is the number of cans it would take to kill you

The letters in parenthesis afterwards are as follows:

(CC) = Coca-Cola Company
(D7) = Doctor Pepper & 7 UP
(M) = Mistic
(P) = Pepsi-Cola
(RC) = Royal Crown
(S) = Snapple

Least Lethal --> Most Lethal
  • Decaffeinated Lemon Tea Snapple (S) 2268
  • Tea Snapple (Ginseng, Sun, Diet Sun) (S) 1360.8
  • Lipton Brisk (P) 1134
  • Diet Nestea Cool (CC) 927.82
  • Sweet Tea Snapple (S) 850.5
  • Lemonade Iced Tea Snapple (S) 756
  • Nestea Iced Tea (Lemon, Diet Lemon, Raspberry, Peach) (CC) 637.88
  • Nestea Cool (CC) 637.88
  • Mistic Tea (Lemon, Diet Lemon, Peach) 567
  • Moon (Green Tea) Snapple (S) 567
  • Lightning (Black Tea) Snapple (S) 486
  • Barq's Root Beer (CC) 463.91
  • Diet A&W Creme Soda (D7) 463.91
  • IBC Cherry Cola (D7) 443.74

  • A&W Creme Soda (D7) 351.93
  • Tea Snapple (Lemon, Diet Lemon, Peach, Diet Peach, Mint, Raspberry, Diet Raspberry) (S) 324
  • Coca-Cola (Cherry, Diet, Classic) (CC) 300.18

  • Mr. Pibb (Regular, Diet) (CC) 255.15
  • Dr. Pepper (Regular, Diet) (D7) 248.93
  • Sunkist Orange Soda (D7) 248.93
  • Diet Sunkist Orange Soda (D7) 243
  • Dr. Nehi (RC) 243
  • Royal Crown Cola (Cherry, Regular) (RC) 236.25

My Anatomy and Physiology Final is tomorrow...

Some effects of caffeine : increased mental alertness, restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, dilation of the bronchioles, increased blood pressure, and increased renal function. Increased renal function means you pee more.

Mike, caffeine causes cardiac arrhythmias, which cause quivering. If the heart was able to coordinate the rhythm, it could beat at that speed and not explode.

At about 2mg/kg load, caffeine will induce nausea, vomiting, and muscle spasms.

Amp has 77mg/8oz. If DJ drank 6 cans, that would be 50.4oz of Amp, 3,881mg of caffeine. I don't think DJ weighs 887 lbs, so that would induce "BAD THINGS" in him, if ingested at the same time. The liver will have processed most of the caffeine out of the blood about 3 hours after ingestion.

Amp also happens to be my drink of choice to stay awake on the road. Works rather well. Should have used it when I pulled a 54 hour day before the VCU regional in 2002, then tried to drive the 2.5 hours there. :ahh:

I did'nt think sunkist or root beer were cafffinated! Either I have been living a lie, or they take sugar into account. Wonder how much sugar it would take to kill someone?

thank the stars that sprite doesnt have caffiene! though my drink of choice during build season is mountain dew...all i have to say is, caffeine isn't the only thing all u guys should be worrying about with mountain dew, because there's also the whole 'yellow 6' thing.... :D

Heh, I had made some cool caffeine shirts for me and some of my friends.

If you guys are interested, let me know (via PM, preferably) and I'll set up a coupon so you can get them for just the base price.

Mountain Dew is, though, the beverage of choice for our team during build season. Bawls are just too expensive.

I don't think that the whole 'Yellow 6' thing is all that its cracked up to be. After all, if it really had serious 'side effects' as the myths say, the FDA would probably ban its sales here in the U.S. And, if you are curious, look at all the food you eat. You will see that Yellow 6 is in a lot more food than you think. I've seen it on the ingredients list on various sports drinks, microwave popcorn, chips, Doritos, various snack food products, and some ice cream.

Anyway, if it would take 149 cans of Mountain Dew to kill me (which the caffeine calculator says), I think that I would have more pressing issues on my mind, other than a caffeine overdose. After all, 149 cans x 12 ounces/can = 1,788 ounces = 111.75 gallons of Mountain Dew. You would probably die from your cells exploding from a massive overdose of water before the caffeine would kill you.

When I was in school it was Red 5.

Myth. You can find a page on it at snopes, listed under Yellow 5.
