Calm before the Storm
Early to late Aug is the FIRST calm before the storm. Many summer events are now complete, students are preparing for fall classes and the CD Forums are quite empty as vacations are diverting our attentions.
With this said......... Any clue to when FIRST will be releasing basic information for the 2006 season? Dates, locations and new registration processes are of interest to all FIRST Teams. We have the dates for the Championship April 27, 28 and 29 but this is all. Of interest also is the result of the location for the Championship 07,08,09 as the bid process was to be complete early this fall. We all need to enjoy the calm for it is such a short time, but the anticipation of a new season is in the back of our minds with questions, ideas and the excitement of the coming Robotics season. Anyone heard any 2006 information? |
Re: Calm before the Storm
Not to start a huge debate, but I had a thought (that I'm sure someone else has thought of)...
But, wouldn't it be nice to have the kick-off before the winter/Christmas/holiday break to allow people to use the normal time off from work/school to get a really good start on the game? Sure, maybe it should be a time of relaxation before the 4 months of FIRST, but it is an idea... Anyway...I'm anxious for 2006... |
Re: Calm before the Storm
I feel the loomings of a new season...
The signs are here already... most ominous is The All-Knowing, but often Less Then Helpful, Dave Lavery has taken his webcam down. He's hiding something! Something cool! |

The word is that FIRST is supposed to release the location of the 07,08,09 Championships no later than Aug 15, which would be this coming Monday. It's down to two cities so we shall find out very soon! :] |
Re: Calm before the Storm
Some little bird told me event info will be up on 9/1, with pre-registration and FRC event registration not too far past that.
I bet you wish you could see the file on my desktop named "FIRST '06 Dates", don't ya? |

Many dates can be guestimated by looking at where the events are going to be held. The 2 possible regionals for us (Rochester & maybe Cleveland) both have their spring schedule posted. & since the events are held on school property I can guess that FIRST will schedule the events during a school break. As for anything else who knows. & as for the holiday break idea ... My wife would KILL me. Just use it to relax ... like that could really happen. |

Just...no. |
Re: Calm before the Storm
I think if they don't keep the event in Atlanta, they may move it to a college campus. But then again they need a place with a large amount of hotels. But I can't wait for more info to come out. And the sooner the date for kickoff comes out, the sooner we all start counting.
This Will be the Greatest Season Ever! |
Re: Calm before the Storm
Hmm.. Midwest or South... Midwest or South.... That is the question.... :D
Indiana sure is smack dab in the center of the Midwest... |

There was a "rumor" a while back in this post about 4 cities in the running. Could one of these cities the the destination of the FIRST World Championships? |
Re: Calm before the Storm
What is the other city being considered besides Atlanta?
|
Re: Calm before the Storm
I think a bigger question for right now is "when do we get info about the Vex Pilot Season?" Because that is scheduled to kickoff in October. Right around the corner. I have received some preliminary information about regional locations (none in California :( ) but that is it.

Re: Calm before the Storm
I'm sure most of us are very eager to see what the 2005-2006 FIRST robotics season has in store for us. Personally, I don't mind the wait because it gives us time to prepare and train the new members.
I really don't see the point in speculation. But that's just my opinion. I don't want to say anything to offend people, so sorry if I did. Please don't flame me! |

I hope its in Atlanta! They have the origional Longhorn Steakhouse (really good) and its the only way we can afford to go. Personally everyone here is saying what their birdies say but i want to hear it from the birds beak.

Re: Calm before the Storm
A bunch of my friends work at Longhorn. Longhorn is great. I haven't really heard anything but I can't see why it wont be in ATL. Don't fix something that isn't broken.

Re: Calm before the Storm
1. As stated, the three cities that made major presentations for the FRC Championship are Atlanta, Indy, and Detroit. Decision to be finalized in August.
2. FRC game development is well underway. Despite what many may believe, this isn't all done at the last minute. Your input in the CD threads is taken into consideration as well as the feedback given at the official team forums. If you participated, thank you. The kickoff will remain in January as always and the calendar for registration, etc. will be similar to last year. 3. The FIRST Vex Challenge (FVC) pilot season will include six regional competitions. Two of these will run in conjunction with FLL competitions, two with FRC regionals, and two will stand alone. There will again be an FVC tournament at the Championship as well. Since this is still a pilot, FIRST and Radio Shack want to explore all of the possibilities. Five of the six sites have been finalized and an announcement will come from FIRST as soon as the sixth site is nailed down. The FVC pilot now has it's own management team at FIRST and things are in great hands. 4. FVC game development is 95% complete. Registration is set to begin in September, with kickoff in October. Look for something that is accessible and affordable as both FIRST and Radio Shack are interested in bringing as many "newbies" in as possible. However, it is anticipated that current programs will also be involved and will field some of the teams. 5. FLL registration has been open and will remain so through September. The Ocean Oddyssey challenge (along with the JFLL pilot that is continuing to phase II) will be released on September 12. 6. Dave still likes Krispy Kremes (right Amanda?), JVN now lives in Texas and builds cool stuff for a living, Andy B. is still cooler than any of us will admit, Brandon continues to do way too much for this site and we all appreciate it, and FIRST is sure to involve a record number of students in its programs again in 2006. :) All is well. Have fun this year. As I've said in the past, there is no guarantee you'll ever get to do this again, so enjoy it! |

Re: Calm before the Storm
I live within an hour of Indianapolis.
I love Atlanta. But you know something? It doesn't matter to me which one is chosen. Both are excellent cities as far as entertainment, hotels, etc go, and the locations are both good. Championships are championships, and I have no problem to fly the extra few hundred miles to experience that all over again. |
Re: Calm before the Storm
So does this mean that my dream of FIRST's triumphant return to Disney is DEAD ????!!!
Please somebody.........Say it ain't so!!! :( |
Re: Calm before the Storm
Disney while great, was a major drain on a teams budget.
The events at Disney were great, many fond memories, however given the economic climate, the growth of FIRST I really do not see it in the future. |

But I doubt this is the chief concern of FIRST teams about competing in Atlanta! |
Re: Calm before the Storm
Finally it's out to the public :)
http://www.usfirst.org/about/news/2007CMPsite.htm A lot of people put a lot of effort into not only the bid for Atlanta but into the bid for all the other competing sites. I was pretty happy when I heard the results but who knows, maybe we'll be in Indy or some other city in 2010 :) . |
