Re: Google chat

To the Linux folk:

I just tried to run the Google Talk client with wine-20050725 and it didn't work. It installs and even runs, but has issues. For some reason I can't get focus of the window to type anything in. Anything I type goes to whatever other window was just in focus. I can click the buttons though...

I guess we're stuck with gaim.

Got further than I did... didn't even install for me. (Well, it was a fixable error, but I didn't care enough at the time.) :)

It will be called GooOS.
Tip: If you haven't invested in Google yet, do so NOW!!!

I highly doubt that. First off, designing applications (especially web applications) is entirely different from designing a functional OS. There would also be the legal problem. You can't really have a monopoly on search engines, all you need to do to switch is go to a new address. Switching OS' is very different, and much more difficult (at least to the not as technically inept). I predict if this happens (which I doubt it will), Google will get slapped with the same monopolistic lawsuits that Microsoft got.

Not necessarily. If it's Linux based, they don't actually have to design much. They'd only have to hammer out the interface (to Googlify it and to make it work with whatever web based features they want). Linux is already designed for remote logins. Supposedly, you can actually have a graphical remote login, but I haven't been able to get that to work yet. There was also an article awhile back about Google's entire server backbone running on Linux already.

As I recall, the issue with Microsoft was that they gained an allegedly unfair advantage in the browser wars by bundling IE with Windows and making it hard to use any other browsers. (Try uninstalling IE...you won't be able to)

Re: Google chat

I'm finding this confusing.

How do you chat? Yeah, I know you pick someone on your contact list, etc. But when I do that, the dialog that pops up talks about inviting the person to download Google Talk. The message is the same, even when I'm trying to chat with one of you guys who have advertised that you have it. When I invite one of you guys, am I really just asking you if it's OK for Gtalk to add you to my friends list?

Also, I'm guessing you are supposed to be able to access your Gmail inbox from Gtalk, since there is an "Inbox" link at the top of the Gtalk window. When I click on the link, nothing happens. I know there is a message there, because I sent myself a message. And the Gtalk client even tells me there is a message by popping up a message from the notification area -- just like the Gmail Notifier did. Has anyone figured this one out yet?

I'm noticing the same thing - I'm guessing that it's broken for now, since this is a beta.

My google chat address is patfair@ (etc...)

I just installed on my laptop here at home. The Inbox link works now! Maybe it's the proxy server at work?

I'm using Gaim on a Linux computer, so I'm not sure. I do know that I got an authorization request from you (and other people) to be added to your buddy list, so yeah, I think so. I also get an email to download Gtalk for each person who adds me, which is kind of annoying... :)

If I add someone to my buddy list on Gaim, it says "not authorized" and doesn't display a status. Has anyone gotten an authorization request from me? I'm not sure if Gaim handles that or not...

I think the email thing is a Gtalk promotion only thing.

Good, glad you got it.

I see you accepted my invitation (as did Daniel), but I haven't received a request from you. (Maybe it's not necessary because I sent the request to you.) But I still haven't been able to raise either one of you on chat yet. I'm starting to believe Gtalk won't work for me here at work behind the firewall.

[UPDATE]
I was able to chat with Ryan today. It does indeed work across the firewall.
[/UPDATE]

I saw you online last night, but I was too tired to try anything (something about 8 hours of work and 4 hours of band camp). I'll try you tonight (I am at work now and can't have any IM services). I don't think a return request is necessary, either.
