Google chat

It's been speculated about before, but a recent Slashdot article has brought it back up: will there be a Google IM client soon?

Out of curiosity, I tried a couple of "experiments" (ok, they're boring, but hey)
  1. Check if the rumored talk.google.com exists - Well, Google doesn't appear to find it, does it? But, what happens if you go to something which you know doesn't exist? You get a different error...
  2. Also, if you try connecting to talk.google.com using a Jabber client, you get an authentication error not the "couldn't connect to host" error you get if you try to connect to say, blar.google.com.
Hm... I'm starting to believe the rumors. ;)

What do you think? Will Google attempt to take over our chatting as well?

P.S. On the attempt to connect to talk.google.com with the Jabber plugin for Gaim, I used my Google account info.
P.P.S. I support a hostile Google takeover. The link was provided to me by another loyal Gmail user. :D
P.P.P.S. Oh heck, let's make it a poll.

Yeah, but worlddomination.google.com isn't a registered domain name... talk.google.com is. It just happens to redirect to something which doesn't exist yet. :)

Re: Google chat

If you telnet talk.google.com on port 5222 it used to come up with

Code:

telnet talk.google.com 5222
Trying 64.233.167.125...
Connected to talk.l.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<stream:stream
to="talk.google.com"
xmlns="j abber:client"
xmlns:stream="http://etherx.jabber.org/streams">
<stream:stream from="talk.google.com" id="C12F7326" xmlns:stream="http://etherx.jabber.org/streams" xmlns="jabber:client">

But it doesn't anymore... hmmm

Re: Google chat

From what i've read on various sources is:
  • it could be made public as early as this Wednesday
  • It'd be like Gaim and Trillian supporting AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and Jabber mediums
  • It'll probably have something to do with Google Toolbar too

now the next thing I ask is Google Operating System?

I'll still stick with Trillian only because I'd rather my system resources not be monopolized upon by one company's applications...

a google operating system would probably not be too far off and would probably seriousely rival Microsoft.

Eh, I don't think so. There is a major leap between an OS and an AIM client.

Plus, if people arn't switching to OSX and Linux in droves, why Google OS?
