Party @ Epcot

What did everyone think of the shindig @ Epcot? I thought it was nice but it was too short. The speeches lasted for a long time, and then Mandy Moore came out... (shes a better blonde) so a lot of people showed up late and rushed the food.... I just wish there was a techno floor, there definitely wasn't. Hah.. the "hhheeeyyyyyyy" 's were pretty %%%% funny too... everyone was yellin and such all together. We're one big team, thats it... hah... I definitely didn't expect Mandy Moore to be there tho.... O, and the fireworks were decent...

-O, and the word of the day is "donk"..... inside joke...

fast frank 28-04-2002 17:26

i thought it was funny how everyone left when mandy moore came out. the party at epcot was pretty good, lots of free food and music. they just need to have more things open.

Todd Derbyshire 28-04-2002 17:47

I thought the party was pretty horrible for multiple reasons
1) way too overcrowded
2) everything was closed by the time Mandy's concert was over:D
3) Dancing at the party just didn't exist oh yeah by the way what was up with all the rap music it was the only music I heard where there was a dance floor but that was too excessive. Worse yet they were stretching soo much that they were playing music that a lot of people have never heard of before. Hopefully the party will get better but next year I'm not planning on going.

Joe Matt 28-04-2002 19:23

It needed lots of work. We were there 1 hour, and by the time your done eating, half had gone by. They never opened the Living Seas (VIP Party) and The Land closed almost immeaditly. Honey was the only one open. Next year, do it on the other side and open Mission: Space and Test Track.

Melissa Nute 28-04-2002 19:28

I thought the party was lame this year, last year was a lot better. The dances were all rap or teeniebopper pop which annoyed me

volleygrrl234 28-04-2002 20:40

I personally left after 2 of Mandy Moore's songs becuase I didn't enjoy the music that much. Personal opinion, but i though that a lot of people shared it by the mass migration away from the stadium. Also, the HHHEEEEYYY thing was REALLY annoying and even parents noticed that it was. But the food was good and you could see everyone together. It wasn't terrible, but work on it would be good. I think we were all just hyper after sitting 3+ hours.

dk5sm5luigi 28-04-2002 21:31

Epcot party

I thought the party was a lot of fun. I always forget how much fun it is to go on Honey I shrunk the Audience with FIRST people. It is a totally different experience. Granted I would like it if it lasted longer.
What i didn't like was the closing ceremonies. In past years they usually have something good. I would have liked it better if they repeated a closing ceremony from the past instead of have mandy.

Joe Matt 28-04-2002 21:45

You were at the last showing too! I WAS ALSO! That was awsome, up there with riding the Segway and Tapestry of Dreams. I also missed that singer to see Tapestry.

KellyT180 28-04-2002 22:26

Party

Personally, I thought the Party this year was very horrible. Everyone was to meet up at the Living Seas for Techno, and that was closed down because of the "VIP Party" and then I found out that it was near Honey, I shrunk the audience... and then the people at Disney were telling everyone to go here and we couldn't go there and this is closed and all that.. The Mandy Moore concert should have been like an opening ceremony concert type thing... so that everyone is pumped.. Giving a concert on the final day of competition where everyone is tired and hungry, really isn't a good thing. The Speeches were nice, and yeah, "Everyone's a winner" inside joke, they should have kept it short. It was too long. They went til 8:30, which meant that, that would only give us about 2 hours, if that, to eat and dance and have fun and then go back.. how about making the party longer next time. Last year was much better, and I hope the music is more diverse next time, and not just all Rap.. Don't get me wrong, I love rap, but there are other things out there, like techno, alternative, Pop, Ska/punk, and Latin. I mean just mix it up.. That's all that I have to say.. I just hope that next year it will be better, and they open up all the rides for us!!:)

Ydnar 28-04-2002 23:14

awards cearamony, too long, party too short... need more time to do stuff, the fireworks could of been alot longer, i felt really sorry for those teams that that paid 75$ per person... i wouldn't of paid 5$ for that... need more stuff open to allow us to sprad, to be honest the best part of the pary was when we were leaving and peoiple were shouting and we were all singing on the bus, one of the funniest part was when me and two other members on my team started a "hey-ho" chant while waiting for the bus to the all-star music resort. that's opinion on the whole party

also, mandy moore, what were they thinking?!?!?!?!?!?!

Amy Beth 28-04-2002 23:35

The poll needs an option that conveys more emotion than "needs work" but is not quite so rude as to say "horrible".
I thought it was far too crowded, the food was bad, the music too loud, and there seriously was nothing to do.

I think it would be really cool if next year they just ran the park as usual except for you are only allowed in with a wristband. Personally, i would rather have payed for real food than eaten that...stuff. Also, my team did not have disney passes, so that was the only time we ever got to go into epcot at all...and nothing was even open.

The "hey" thing was pretty annoying...although i thought it was supposed to be "A" as in "eh"...so whenever we heard it, my team responded with "B", to which someone invariably said "C".

Did anyone else feel bad for Mandy? Did anyone at all stay until the end of her concert?

Michael Murphy 29-04-2002 00:01

I stuck around until the end of the concert- nothing special. We only stayed until the line at the entrance to Epcot went down. And the party was a tremendous waste of time. The music was bad, the food was subpar, and there was nothing to do. AmyBeth330 had a good point. Just give us the park.

JDesRosier 29-04-2002 01:27

Worst Team Party Ever

Without a doubt, that was the worst team party that we've had yet. I personally was looking forward to a Disney finale at the end of the 2 days of competition, but instead some pre-teen idol was brought out to sing a bunch of pop songs. It was funny watching most of the people completely ignore her and enter into Epcot. The whole bags check thing was completely horrible too; little effort was put into actually checking the bags, and was more just going through the motions, and it held up entrance, and clogged the front of Epcot with people waiting for their friends. We found most food at the beginning to be completely gone, until we got into the Lands building. After we ate (food was good, and the lemonade was a real nice touch this year) a group of us made our normal trip to the hydroponics ride, to be told by a few Disney employees that the ride was now "closed" and only those currently in line were allowed to ride. We left Lands to find everyone being ushered into one general area to watch the fireworks show. The layout was poorly done by Disney, the crowd wasn't handled well in my opinion, and some of their employees just waved wands without actually caring which way they directed people (a couple of our people were directed the wrong way.) The fireworks were decent, and the flaming FIRST sign was awesome, but the show would've been 10x better at Einstein with the lasers, pyrotechnics, and men with stilts like in previous years. -- Just my $.02

Marc P. 29-04-2002 06:33

I didnt' even get to the party. Right when Mandy came out a bunch of friends and I made our way out as part of the mass migreation. We got the the entrance of Epcot and determined we were all soaked and wanted to get some dry clothes on before getting to the party. We hop a bus to our hotel, get some dry clothes on, and wait at the bus station. First bus comes by, with "special" in the marquee. A bunch of FIRST people come off, we attempt to board, only to recieve "I'm sorry, I can't bring you to Epcot, it's closed" to which we reply "but we're part of the reason it's closed." They say "Well, I can't bring you there" after which closing the door and driving away. Next bus comes by, same deal. "Umm... you'll have to wait for the "Epcot" bus, they'll bring you there." Next bus says Epcot: "Nope. (with a very corny smile) "I'm not going back to Epcot *click*(turns off the marquee, drives away.)" Next bus comes by, "We're not providing transportation TO the FIRST or Grad events, you're on your own for that. We only bring you back." And so forth, this goes on for about half an hour, until one bus driver tells us to pay for a taxi to bring us down. At this point it's 9:45, and we said nuts to it and swam in the hotel pool for the rest of the night. Long story short, Disney Bus services suck.

Quain 29-04-2002 06:59

Marc dood, thats sucks hardcore. The only thing you may have missed was a lot more walking. Nothing really exciting went on...

What happened? I heard some people were throwing stuff @ her... (which is so ignorant.) Did anything happen that was like... super horrible? I hope everyone represented FIRST and us better than that. Throwing stuff @ someone who is giving time to put on a show for us, even if you don't like it, is so rude.

If one thing was good, it was the wait in line/bus ride back to the resort. I was headin back to the All Star Movies resort, and the people in line were very talkative and funny, and were the same on the bus. The transportatation rush was handled very well though, i was surprised.

Team238-aholic 29-04-2002 09:30

MANDY MOORE WAS THERE????????

Quain 29-04-2002 09:42

yea.. she sang @ the closing ceremonies. It wasn't that good... i don't think theres many teenie boppers that partake in robotics.. well.. atleast not enough to justify having her... but shes still hot... a better blonde

KellyT180 29-04-2002 09:52

I think the concert at the end was a bad choice.. Everyone was tired and hungry or just tired.. I know that I was.. the heat just took my energy away.. The Party this year was horrible.. the only good thing was the "A" chant at Honey, I shrunk the Audience.. that was funny.. it kept everyone amused or annoyed... hehe.. anyways.. I just hope that next year, they keep the ceremony shorter and the party longer... so if you missed the party this year, don't worry, you didn't really miss much.. just food and people walking around, and was told that everything was closed... and that's just my $.02.

DaveyPotter144 29-04-2002 10:30

Well....I must say, My team went around saying "Hey"and it was mostly due to the fact that...there wasn't very much of anything...and I mean anything to do!

Some of you's might have thought it was annoying but we were doing something that raised many spirits at the party. We had a lot of fun and from the sounds of it some of you people didn't and I'm sorry to hear that.

By the way "HEEEEEEEEEY!!!!!!!"

Joe Matt 29-04-2002 10:51

From what I hear from somebody in the front, they were throwing, in true FIRST tradition, buttons and other team memorabelia to wear!:D

Here is what they need to do next year....
-Make awards shorter
-No concert
You then go to:
-Enstine open for dancing
-Epcot, ushered to Mexico-Germany to see parade, then fireworks, then back to....
-Epcot Test Track side open to only bands
-Can buy food or eat the stuff provided.

I really think FIRST was decieved about what was open. The handout they were giving out seemed like they thought that Imagination, The Land, and The Living Seas was open. Only Honey was open, The Land closed at regular time, and The Living Seas was given to the stuck up VIPs.

But Honey was the best ever with all teams.

Just an FYI...that handout was something that Disney put together and dropped on the team tables after the pits were closed on Friday night...

AlexM 29-04-2002 11:26

Heh, Mandy Moore? (sp?) I don't think that's what this crowd REALLY listens to, but nice try, Disney... we watched for a few and then headed to Epcot. The party was OK, not good, not bad. Kinda retarded that there was only one entrance to the food area, and a little bigger selection of food and I would have been happy.

Scottie2Hottie 29-04-2002 12:02

Amy's right, it started as "AAAAA!" our teams official cheer which sounds much like "Heeeeeey" which most people thought we were screaming.

As for the party, I think the mandy moore thing, though not very thought out in regards to their target audience, was a start in the right direction. I, along with what seems to be the majority of robotics members, would like see a punk or ska band. Hey the chemical brothers were in florida the night before, i think many more people would have stayed for them than for mandy. Anything live is much better than something spun.

As for Disney, I am somewhat angry with them because they took away my glow staff along with my other staff before epcot. They also completely eliminated the techno party that was held last year in the living seas and replaced it with a rap party outside the living seas. All the raver kids were then directed to future world by the dj of the rap party for the "techno party". From reports of kids that went there (I myself was unable to leave because i was waiting for someone(who i never found(i love parenthesis inside parenthesis(they remind me of programming)))) the dj played two techno songs and then started playing rap. After i ate one plate of sub-par pasta, danced a little, and watched a fireworks display the party was over. I then went on a goose chase to get my staffs back after which I waited in line for 30 minutes (No complaints there) to get on the bus and go back to my hotel. Disney (or FIRST, i dont know who organized everything), in my opinion, did handle the buses to the hotels well. In my opinon, the best part of the entire debacle was the bus ride home in which we got down to 30 bottles of beer (the song, not actual beer).

just my perturbed $.02

Sean_330 29-04-2002 12:11

You really have to give FIRST credit for trying.

Most people do not fully realize the huge amount of work that goes into planning a FIRST event. The same people planning the parties have to run the whole event for 3 days and not just do tha party. The purpose of the event is to compete. The party is just icing on the cake so to speak. The party can be whatever you make it. If you are there with a person you like (like i was) it does not matter what is open or not, you can find ways to have fun. As for Mandy Moore, i am not her biggest fan by any means, but i still think it was nice for FIRST to make an effort to get us someone that they felt was good/famous to give us a concert. As part of crew for the nat's i attended the crew meting the night before. Be assured that FIRST had your best interests in mind for the party and really did want to make it a fun experience. It just did not work out for some people and teams. But you have to give them credit for trying and some people like myself did have fun.

Ian W. 29-04-2002 14:48

being a rookie, and therefore, my first year at nats, i thought the competition was awesome. step forward t othe party, well, it didn't hold up as well. way too much rap (as i say, you can't spell crap without rap), and there was way too many people in an area that was too small. for the food, well, it was better than McDonald's (not saying much) but compared to the disney food, it kinda sucked. plus, the fact that everything seemed to close early, well, it made the crowds even bigger. the fireworks at the end were pretty cool, but that seemed to be the only cool part. i didn't see the concert, and i could care less because i dispise all pop music. i like the fact that FIRST tried, but next year, try harder. i think there's many more FIRSTers who are into punk/ska/rock/etc. maybe next year...

katie86 29-04-2002 15:16

Well, I thought the "heeey" or "aaaa" thing was funny. I don't know why so many people had an issue with it, but those are probably the people that were on my bus back to the hotel that were screaming "SHUT UP!!!!!!" while everyone else was singing.

Guess they never stopped to think that "Shut up" is a lot more annoying in a Linkin Park sort of way.

So I ran to the party because I wanted my free food. The breadsticks tasted like glue, yuck. But it wasn't all that bad. I ate in the Living Seas and the found one of my friends from combbat (the team that I was "stuck" next to in the pits AGAIN!) and hung out with him for a while. Then my friends and I went back to our hotel and changed clothes. We went back to the party (our bus driver didn't really speak english and we probably could have asked him to take us to upstate NY and it wouldn't have phased him) to say good bye to some other teams.... and then we went back to the hotel. We didn't do much of the whole team party thing because it just seemed pretty lame from the onset. No big deal, my friends and I can have fun anywhere. :D

I am not cool with Mandy Moore but I like the idea that they tried to do something "cool" like that. Throwing stuff at a pop icon... call me rude, but I think it's sort of funny. I'm used to going to shows where throwing things is pretty much a staple event. Maybe the popstar is going counterculture?

Last year the party seemed so much longer, too.

As for getting stuff taken away... I walked into the party with our team flag on it's fancy weapon-like metal pole and the guy who supposedly checked stuff said "oh, an umbrella, ok." as I walked on by. Too bad it didn't look like an umbrella at all. Best security ever. I could have been hiding a rifle wrapped in cloth and it would have looked the same way.

The party wasn't that great, but... well... HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY.

Team238-aholic 29-04-2002 15:34

I like mandy moore....I'm probably the only FIRST person that enjoys pop music....if i was there...i would of been totally psyched....but people threw stuff at her??? thats completely rude and un-necessary.....if you don't like her, leave...don't throw stuff at the girl...

The Paco 29-04-2002 16:06

The party was very bad. it was such a let down. i am only a freshman and i had heard many good things about the prevoius year's parties and i was so pumped up but when i got there all i did was eat and go on honey i shrunk the audience before i had to go back to the hotel. the awards ceremony was too long and i agree that the mandy moore concert shouldve come in the beginniung when we were all not tired and hungry. more areas of the park shouldve been open as well. the food was subpar. and all there was to drink was lemonade. it was pretty lame. i had more fun in the 10 minutes riding back to the hotel with my teammates than i had the hour and a half at the party.

AC3488 29-04-2002 16:28

Dissapointed

The party this year was dissapointing to me personally. Last year the Land and the Saes were open for dancing as well as outside dance floors. This year the only places that stayed open to dance were the floors outside, and they were much smaller than the ones last year. I think first has to do a better job at making the party like it was last year.

-andy-

volleygrrl234 29-04-2002 16:37

I think that part of the problem with the length of the ceremony was that last year they only had the two reps. from each team sit in the middle and go up and accept the given award. I think that was a better idea than having the entire team trek up to the stage. And some of the speakers were a little long winded. Don't get me wrong; it was great stuff, but talking to 10,000 tired and hungry teenagers for 3 hours is a little fruitless. I know my attention span was worn out by the end of it!

Team238-aholic 29-04-2002 18:04

I feel totally rude saying this....but oh well

I know alot of you like different music and such...but just think about it....you really can't like dance to rock music....ska ya you can....but they are going to play like hip hop/pop/techno...because people want to dance....ya know?? so thats why they play it...and I highly doubt it will change....cause thats what you can dance too, ya know? I hope that didn't sound to rude

Ryan Dognaux 29-04-2002 18:34

It was decent..

I'm a freshman this year, so I had heard that last years team party at nationals was just awesome, but this year seems way different than last years. Nothing was really open in Epcot cept for the Honey I Shrunk the Audience thing (which was cool). But I've never been to disney before so it was cool just seeing stuff ^o^ ..and the food.. eh... lol.
Mandy Moore was unexpected! That was cool... I guess.. next year Blink 182 should show up that would be awesome! The Amazon.com guy is awesome Bezos or whatever his name is. I thought there could've been less techno at the competition... I still have those crazy drum beats going through my head and the sounds of peoples' voices in 1 second intrevals. All in all, I'd give it a 7/10 because you can never have too many doves flying out of cages having no idea where to go :).What was up with they 'hey' thing? I must've missed something..... the big fight over the giant ball was funny and the wave!! The Wave was cool! Can't wait till next year!

Travis Hoffman 29-04-2002 18:51

Hey, I didn't know our Team 48 kids were so avant garde....they were all doing the "Eeeeeeeeyyyyy" thing last year. Such great young innovators we have here at Delphi E.L.I.T.E. :-)

As far as the party goes, I echo the sentiment of my good student friend "The Paco". The awards ceremony was way too long (although it was great to see the crowd make the most of their time in the stands - the "slow" wave was GREAT), and the Mandy Moore concert seemed out of place. Once the party finally started, I was shocked to see how crowded the party area was once they closed "The Land". I personally felt unsafe in that crowded atmosphere. If I remember correctly, Disney left The Land open for dancing until the end of the party last year, so I assume they closed it early this year to prepare for the fireworks (which were yet another disappointment - the Cleveland Indians put on far better fireworks displays at Jacobs Field than Disney did for FIRST, and the Indians do it multiple times a year - I was prepared for something way more special than I witnessed). If they are going to continue to close parts of the party area early in future years, Disney should definitely open up more areas of the park to allow the people to spread out more and ease the congestion.

To sum up, the party was way too short and crowded for my liking. Many people paid a lot of money to gain entrance to this event, and I feel all of us deserved much better. In my opinion, Disney and FIRST took a step backward with their party planning this year, as last year's party was far more memorable. Fortunately, we know that FIRST usually listens to the concerns we all have regarding the program, so keep providing constructive feedback to them, and you can hopefully expect a much improved experience next season.

One more thing - regardless of the quality of the party, this year's Championship Event rocked! Congratulations to all the people and teams who made the competition so great!

Scottie2Hottie 29-04-2002 19:24

I hope I do not offend anybody with this (Not that I don't mean it to be frank and critical of many people, more that i hope none of you have a reason to feel criticized)

Last time i checked FIRST doesn't stand for "For Indulgence and Recognition of Sexual Tendencies". I saw a lot of crude and vulgar dancing that quite frankly disgusted me. Last year Dean came out and renounced a music video they played during some of the off time at nationals. The dancing i saw went way past the point of vulgarity that Dean himself said did not line up with the purposes and Spirit of FIRST. And, quite frankly, the music they play now fosters that kind of dancing. Perhaps it is just me in my naiveness, but I really thought participants in FIRST were above that kind of ludeness.

Ska, on the other hand, is an upbeat high - energy (not unlike many FIRST participants) music that fosters none of the previously mentioned dancing. It's a music that I believe many more people in FIRST would dance to according to this thread What music do you listen to? (nearly two / thirds like Punk, Ska, or Alternative compared to only 8% who liked Rap or Pop in case you like I are too lazy to click on the link).

Although Pop and Rap (They were definitely not playing hip-hop) are popular in mainstream society, the simple fact is that we are not mainstream, we are "one in a million" according to Dean. Thusly we have our own genre of music that is not mainstream that we enjoy and can dance to(anyone who has been to a show can attest to the dancing part). I have no objection to techno however they did not play any techno at the party.

I feel like many of the FIRSTers out there feel alienated at the parties. At the Western Michigan Party for every one person on the dance floor there was at least three people sitting on the bleachers doing a whole lot of nothing. At nationals there was probably a hundred people at most on the dance floor i was by, and probably twice that on the grass surrounding it doing again a whole lot of nothing. I Understand that there is no way to please everyone, but perhaps FIRST could take in to consideration the majority of FIRSTers that are not part of the mainstream.

volleygrrl234 29-04-2002 19:47

Raul~ in case you missed the memo, El and I got pooped on by those doves!!!! They were a nice touch, but getting bird crap in your hair isn't a nice way to start the day!

David Kelly 29-04-2002 20:11

have you already forgotten that i got crapped on too? cause i was with you guys. it was soooo nasty. i kept finding more on my clothes as the day went on. i also wiped it all over you CT:p

-there were later more conversations over this subject and they prolly aren't appropiate for the Chief so i'm not going to say much about them.

PsychoPhil 29-04-2002 20:35

well well...

Although there are enough posts saying that te party was bad, I hvae to say it again: THE PARTY wAS REALLY BAD! Just in case that someone important should care enough to read this and tries to make it better the next time...

We found empty trays of food everywhere, so we were like: "let's wait here till tey bring more"

After only 10 minutes some disney people showed up to tell us that it was too crowded to bring more food to the middle of the party place, we should try it on the ends. We did. After 10 more wagons with empty trays we found some food. We weren't completely done eating when a lady from disney showed up, telling us that we had to move, because it was already 9:15 and the fireworks would start at 10:00 right behind us and it would be dangerous to sit there (huh???, we got 45 minutes, but anyways we ended up moving)

and yeah, it was too crowded in general...
It was the most fun, to just yell acros the party place a "hey" and to hope to get a response from a lot of people

And yeah, the fireworks, could have been more. And what was that symbolism that the FIRST logo fell apart at the end????

kane 29-04-2002 21:09

The party was bad but i got on test track so it was good until i got off. The music sucked, okay they don't get that most of us aren't fans of pop or rap. I hate night club music its terrible, rock, punk, ska is so much better, sure moshing can get people hurt but if you actually do it right nobody gets hurt. Besides its more fun to jump to some good punk than suffer through some bad pop.

Trashed20 29-04-2002 21:21

i don't understand why so many people took offense to the "AAAA!!!" chant. We got many replies of "GAAYY!!!" or "go AWAAAYY!!!" or "ehhhhhh shut up we hate you". We are just having fun and i guess i just don't understand why people hate it so much? it's just a letter for pete's sake! Half the teams seemed to embrace it while the other half seemed to think it was the reincarnation of the devil or something. any comments?

my thoughts.

it was funny at first but after a while it got really annoying. it's like the thing with steeling the balls that were getting thrown in the stands during the closing ceremonies. people would chase each other up the stands from the complete other side of the stands and take the ball. it was getting redicious. at one point it looked like a fight was going to break out. nobody was paying attention to the ceromoney and i thought it was rude. i'm surprised dean or woddie didn't say anything because i'm sure they noticed how bad it was. i'm sure part of it was because we were sitting there for 3 hours and getting restless. they need to revert back to sending up 2 team represenatives because it took less time.

The Paco 29-04-2002 21:42

im proud to say the whole AAAYYYY thing was started by delphi ELITE last year. it continued this year in honor of the canadians and thier famous phrase.
some rock/punk/ska music wouldve been much better than that rap/pop stuff that they played but all in all there was not enough time. all i did was eat and go on honey i shrunk the audience with some of the engeneers from our team.
the food and the fireworks left some to be desired.
i just hope its better next year!

3 words david~ LEARN TO SPELL!!!! :)

Justin 188 29-04-2002 22:20

ELITE, you guys rock :)

"AAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!"
"What does that spell??"
"AAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!"

"....."

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!"

Justin 188 29-04-2002 22:40

Ok about the Epcot party: WHY DID THEY CLOSE ALL THE BUILDINGS??

Last year there were a number more rides and stuff open - people weren't forced to walk around in a circle if they weren't dancing.

Also as a result of closing all the other attractions, "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" became backed up like a crappy toilet.......

KellyT180 29-04-2002 22:59

Did you guys know that Crystal Method was there friday Night at the House of Blues?? I mean that would have been awesome to see them in concert! But that's just me.. I mean we should just have a concert of different music, like: Ska/Punk, Techno, and something else.. But it would be cool.. What do ya think?

Hymnson 29-04-2002 23:39

It was overcrowded at the dance floors cuz for some reason they decided to shut down 2 of the dance floors. So everyone was basically compacted onto 1 dance floor and thus the lack of music variety and diversity. But the concert was a definite surprise but it was way too unorganized and made the team party confusing. Great fireworks though!

Jon Lawton 29-04-2002 23:46

Well...

I didn't find the food all that great, but then again none of the Disney food was. For feeding that amount of people, though, it was definately acceptable. I still think Silicon Valley had the best team party food (both in quality and selection).

It would have been nice if there was some kind of map or direction as to what was where and when during the party. I don't know about everyone else, but those little lighted wands didn't help too much!

The "HEEEEY" (or whatever it was) was very fun! I loved how you could yell it anywhere and people would respond. I found that quite novel! I didn't know there were people taking offence at it, though, until I read about all the complaining on here...

Mandy Moore? Uhm, okay... I thought it was *really* cool that FIRST was able to set somthing like that up, but I do have to agree that both the timing of the concert and the artist selection for the concert needed some more work.

*THREE HOUR* closing ceremony? I really liked hearing all the major players talk, but three hours *is* rather excessive. Especially when you've got 10,000 excited people all wanting to go to a party that is being made increasingly shorter.

Transportation from the event seemed to be really orginized. I have no complaints here! However, there were a number of other times durning my stay that Disney transportation was rather crappy.

As for the dances, I didn't really get to go to those, becasue the party was over by the time I had finally got food (and matching utensils!) and went on "Honey, I Shrunk The Audience!". I missed out on the fireworks becasue I had no idea what time they were at... (see above point on when/where things are)

So that's my take on the party. Overall, I had a great time at the Championship Event, and would go without a doubt in future years!

jnatt 30-04-2002 01:23

IMHO....

This years party left much to be desired. While it was nice that we got fireworks this year. The negatives out weighted the positives.

First there was not enough food available at the time we all arrived. When they did finally refill things we where not around. (Cost savings trick by Disney).

They hearded us like cattle and the staff did not do the Disney thing "Make Magic Happen" on one occassion the staff even pushed a few people to get the them to move. Professionalism was missing this year.

With respects to Dean: I agree he [Dean] talked a bit to long. Someone needs to remind him our attention span is only as long as we can sit for. This means no long winded comments espically after being in the Florida heat.

If you are going to get a star to perform then get someone we all could respect maybe??? Not someone we all just ran out on.

Finally I could not wait to get home this year.

With Respects:

Quain 30-04-2002 07:01

I think Phillys Party was pretty good if ya ask me. It was in the Franklin Institute and had pretty good food.. lotsa Tastykakes (its a Philly thang), hotdogs, pretzels, cheese steaks... all the things we're known for. O well... I hope i get to go back to natl's next year as an Alumni.. We'll see....

hhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Wayne Doenges 30-04-2002 11:53

I thought the party inhaled audibly. I didn't think the food was too bad but everything being closed really was a downer. Why can't they mix up the music instead of playing just one genre? I would love to hear come good KISS or Chicago or Boston once in awhile.
Another pet peeve of mine is litter. There were trash cans everywhere and allot of people didn't use them. I even saw trash in the ponds. That is just plain asinine.
Second pet peeve. As the crowds were leaving a group of kids started walking thought the flowers along the walk instead of staying on the paved walkway. It takes allot to keep the park nice but some kids see it as their own yard and walk anywhere they please. I shudder to think what the park looked like the next morning. They probably had to replant allot of the flowers. I wouldn't be surprised if the party was canceled next year.

This is my first year on the team and all I have heard from my team is that The Epcot Party was pretty bad compared to last year! Not only was the food bad, but most of the rides were not open and by the time the public was out, it was time for us to leave too! The party needed to be longer and I wish the rides were open longer. I thought the Philli party was better but the Epcot party wasnt as bad as VCU though (If u were at VCU u know what Im takin bout)

Considering we only went to two competitions, it might seem easy to pick the better party. But I think that the Cleveland one was great just because, like Disney, it was in a public place with exhibits and such, but all of it was kept open for us to walk around in. They had everything going and people around that were helpful. I think they handled the situation a lot better than the Disney people.

Ryan Dognaux 30-04-2002 21:18

Cleveland rocked!

Cleveland's party was awesome! The rock and roll hall of fame was an awesome choice for it.. the band was good at their cover songs and one of the guys on our team did the drums up there with the band ^o^ I felt sorry for that guy who tried to crowd surf... and.. well.. fell on his head... hope that guy is okay... well besides that, Cleveland's party was really cool, not saying the Disney's was bad...but I would rank Cleveland's party higher than Disney's party.

pronlems with closing this year

I must say that I was disappointed with FIRST team's behavior this year. We should not have been throwing balls around in the first place. IT was a time to recognize people's achivements, not to fight over a giant beach ball. That made me so angry, and almost embarrased to be there. A few of the people on my team were catching the balls and deflating them, just so people could pay better attention. I mean, the giant beach ball even blocked the camera view, which is very rude to the speaker then. I hope the teams responsible will remember this for future events.

The Mandy Moore concert may not have been up to FIRST/Disney necessarily. Will Smith did that because he was very interested and excited about the program. Maybe Mandy Moore did felt the same and donated her time. Like Dean said, we are one in a million, and we should have taken the time to watch at least some of the concert to thank all the work involved in making it happen. (To be honest, I really like Mandy Moore, but was also didappointed to not have the awesome laser show this year. THe short firewoeks at the party just didn't do it justice.)

I will agree that the awards ceremony was WAY too long. What was wrong with two people representing the team? Many teams were just huge, and parents and siblings were going up with them. That's just silly. FIRST should remember that most of us don't have much of an attention span, especially after such a long couple of days.

The party was really bad, especially for $75. It was so short and not really worth it. I would have loved to stay at the concert, but my team all wanted to go, myself included, because we were so hungry. Then, half of us went thewrong way into the park. I felt really bad for the families who were at Epcot and suddenly crowded with thousands of students running around looking for food.

I hope things work out better next year...too bad it's my last year.

oh yeah...

I totally missed the aaaaaaaaahhh...thing. I didn't even know it happened. was it in a certain division or something? Oh well, I'm so confused, as usual.

The party cost $30, not $75. The $75 fee was for team members (Pit crew and competition team) on teams that did not stay on Disney property. It covered the use of the competition facilities in addition to the team party. Other "members" of teams (parents, alumni, mentors and team members not on the pit crew or competition team) paid only $30 to attend the team party.

As for the quality of the party, I wholeheartedly agree that it "INHALED AUDIBLY." Last year's party was much better. Here's my $.02 for how to improve on it next year:

* Close off the EAST side of EPCOT (Test Track, Space, etc.) on FRIDAY night from 7 to 10 for the exclusive use of FIRST attendees with wrist bands. Have one or two deejays, but no free food. People can go back to their hotel after Friday's competition, change clothes into something dry, grab a bite to eat (or pay $$$ to eat at EPCOT) and then come back to EPCOT for a fun evening.

* Have the FREE FOOD, FIREWORKS, and LASER SHOW on SATURDAY at the STADIUM after the awards ceremony, with one or two live BANDS IN CONCERT.

* Limit teams accepting awards to two student and two adult representatives who would sit close to the stage, making awards presentations go SO much faster.

Joe Matt 01-05-2002 11:06

As I said before, open the big two rides, let everyone in, and party! The area around there is so much bigger because they don't have water everywhere and they could put some things on the grass. Another is to turn Innoventions Plaza into the main dance area and open TT & MS for riding. The Innoventions Plaza would be for dancing/food.

D.J. Fluck 01-05-2002 11:29

My $.02

My $.02:

I thought the party was total crap. The only reason I stayed around was to hang out with the friends that I get to see once, twice and possibly 3 times a year. Other than that I would have made an exit a long time before

*Picks up $.02*

Joe Matt 01-05-2002 11:33

The only reason why i stayed around was that i saw nobody i knew, and talked to a few people. I also look for my friends then did the best Honey, I Shrunk the Audience of my life. That was it....:(

Rob Ribaudo 01-05-2002 16:13

This was my first year in FIRST and I was very dissipointed with the party. I thought there would be more. I could not get in until 8:15 and by the time I was able to get food and finish eating it was 8:40. A few people on my team and I went to "Honey, I Shunrk the Audience." After that there was nothing else to do and my mom wanted to go back to our hotel so we left alittle after 9:00. Didn't get to see the fireworks show.

Whoever does this needs to plan this out better next year. Maybe find out what the teams think is good and jugde it from what would work from there.

Also, why was one side of most of the walk ways roped off? It made the paths so crowed. Who was that part for?

Quain 01-05-2002 18:26

They had tried to keep the public away from us... and us away from the public.. they had their side of the park, we had ours... it woulda been nice if they opened all the Nations and we all got to walk around, and then they did the Illuminations show as the fireworks.. maybe a special FIRST edition. It was an attempt atleast. They just need to have diff kinds of music to try and satisfy everyones musical appetite. I'm not into the whole Hip-hop, pop stuff.. and it kinda ruins a night listenin to unintresting music. It was still fun talkin to everyone... I agree on the whole litter/disrespect issue. Stay off the nice flowers... put ur trash in one of the MANY trashcans... Next year i'll have to be one of the responsible ones IF i got back.. dang alumni... Mandy Moore was a step in the right direction.. just wrong genre and wrong time...

Suike 02-05-2002 13:09

I had fun trying to make the best of a situation and going around and video taping people doing funny stuff. A bunch of friends and I were going around asking people to go crazy and just do whatever.

As far as the rest of the party, the food was ok, has been better. I miss the whole like 5 seperate areas type thing and the subs. I ate Ceasar Salad which was soggy but you gotta expect that seeing as how it was probably made around 2 or 3 that afternoon. As far as the music, it was ok, again with the whole rap thing, not one of my favorites. I miss the fireworks display at the closing ceremonies and those montages from the 3 days where they normally have the video with the time lapse of the whole FIRST complex being constructed.

All in all, it could've been better.

Quentinfool 05-05-2002 22:44

The party was pretty cool but short

anyway do you know who started they

HHHEEEEYYYYY!!! yelling?

IT WAS ME AND THE THUNDERCHICKENS!
