9/11 remembered

I think we all should take a bit of time out of our day today to remember those people who left theirs families for the last time in 2001. The world will never be the same. Please remember our fallen and support our troops in Iraq and the rest of the middle east defending our freedom and the freedom of others.

I think we can all agree that this is the anniversary of a terrible day in the history of our nation and in the history of the world. I would, however, ask that we not confuse what this is an anniversary of. It is irrefutably clear in hindsight, and was arguably clear at the time, that Iraq had nothing to do with the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Not to mention that Iraq was in no way capable of threatening our national security after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. We should remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and we should respect and be thankful to the troops that have carried out their orders in Afghanistan, Iraq, and across the Middle East despite the many obstacles (equipment and low troop numbers to accomplish their goals) that have been put in their way, but we should do so for seperate reasons. I guess what I'm trying to say is that September 11, 2001 was not about Iraq, and that it seemed kind of hazy in your original post as to your intent. Good topic, though, and thanks for posting :).

I usually avoid TV on September 11th now to avoid the obnoxious media saturation of the event with overly sentimentalized pieces that all state the same thing over and over again that I should fell real bad about what has happened (I do) and remember the victims of the tragedy (I do) and I should be proud to be an American (which I am). But that gets real tiring the 500th time they ram it into your skull.

That's pretty politically charged, so lets not turn this into a flamewar. Just try to keep this thread on the original topic, remembering those who died in 9/11 and remembering the soldiers trying to prevent it from happening again.

Here is a video that I had posted exactly one year ago. For those who havn't seen it this video is deep and has a few scenes that are very hard to watch. It takes a few seconds to load, and make sure you have your speakers on.

Of all those who died on that fateful day, the ones I am closest to are the PBS transmitter engineer who was installing a new transmitter on the top of one of the towers. He knew in advance he was not going to get out and was able to call his family to say goodbye. In addition there were 21 members of the I.B.E.W. (I am president of a local I.B.E.W. union) who also lost their lives. We are a target because we are great, but I try to remember that the engineer in Iraq or the student in Iran or the teacher in Afghanistan is just like each of us. They want peace and happiness for their families and friends and hope and pray that it will come true in their lifetime. I hope that their dream comes true.
