Our team machined our wheels out of aluminum, then added some type of tread to the outside (I don't remember exactly what type... It was blue and had really sweet grip for carpet). Our method of attaching them was just to use pop rivets. This worked surprisingly well. We never had any major problems with them. However, it was a small bit annoying to remove them for demos that weren't on carpet. Taking the wheels off of a swerve module can be quite the task.....
