Orange

Is ther really no word that rhymes with orange? Someone has to be able to think of one. Just thought I'd post a little food for thought... hehehe

David Kelly 23-07-2001 23:29

according to the http://www.rhymezone.com/ there are no perfect rhymes for the word orange.

Carolyn Duncan 23-07-2001 23:32

Well, I guess that just settles that now doesn't it?

Syringe comes close enough, when I say it out loud.

Carolyn Duncan 24-07-2001 00:10

I guess it could really depend on where you're from if there is a word that rhymes with orange. Accents can make a big diff. when you're speaking.

Andrew Dahl 24-07-2001 12:03

I can attest that there are no remotely good rymes with orange
even with a accent they fall flat

David Kelly 24-07-2001 12:50

if you just take part of the word orange there are a lot of words that rhyme. there are a lot of words that rhyme with o-r-a-n like: KoRn, worn, horn, porn, sworm.

EddieMcD 24-07-2001 15:02

There are no rhymes for orange. the same holds true for month, silver, & purple.

mike o'leary 24-07-2001 15:05

no words rhyme...i literally spent 4 and a half hours with some friends looking for one once. and plus accents wont make a difference cuz the accent will affect how you say orange and how you say the other word in the same way.

I must tell you that I'm laughing at you right now. It really is funny that you actually spent that much time looking for a word that rhymes with orange. Hey Eddie, who did you say has no life? Maybe you do have a life Mike, but the word lame-o comes to mind. (I mean that jokingly)

mike o'leary 24-07-2001 21:31

someone said there was no rhyme. i was determined to prove him wrong...what can i say? and the only reason i stopped looking for one is cuz school ended.

Flair 25-07-2001 02:23

There are no PERFECT rhymes to the word orange. However, and depending on your accent, there are some slant rhymes. A slant rhyme would be something that rhymes only if you say it the right way, or depending on your pronunciation. As for silver and purple? I know there was a song once that rhymed the word purple. it goes like this...

Well Roses are Red
And Violets are Purple
Sugar is Sweet
And So is Maple Surple

In other words, he created a word. So basically anything could rhyme, but no REAL words.

mike o'leary 25-07-2001 14:18

purple...
what about girbel or maple or grapel?

Brandon Martus 25-07-2001 14:24

or Burple (tm)

remember those?

from http://www.inthe80s.com
Quote:

Burple
Basically it was a powdered drink mix in an accordian style bottle. You stretched out the bottle before adding water. The noise of expanding the bottle and the chugging noise it made when poured sounded like a burp. It was probably out around 1987-1988.

EddieMcD 25-07-2001 15:43

Actually Carolyn, I learned that in 8th grade English, thank you very much.

David Kelly 25-07-2001 17:21

Steve Erkle rhymes with purple.

Carolyn Duncan 25-07-2001 21:57

You learned what in 8th grade english Eddie?
BTW, what about purple nurple? That maybe a regional thing (I don't mean a comp but the actual area where I lived).

EddieMcD 26-07-2001 12:37

Erkle & purple do not rhyme, and nurple isn't a word.

Try telling that to someone who just got one.

Kris Verdeyen 27-07-2001 12:04

A trashery of haberdashery.

The lyrics "...maple surple" are from an old Roger Miller song called "Dang me".

If you want some more of those invented word rhymes, check out some Ogden Nash poetry

This is from one called "common cold"

Give ear, you scientific fossil!
Here is the genuine Cold Colossal;
The Cold of which researchers dream,
The Perfect Cold, the Cold Supreme.
This honored system humbly holds
The Super-cold to end all colds;
The Cold Crusading for Democracy;
The Führer of the Streptococcracy.

Take note, all you would be poets, for there has never been a better line in a poem than, "The Führer of the Streptococcracy"

you can see the rest of the poem at: http://www.cs.rice.edu/~ssiyer/minstrels/poems/325.html

They aren't rhymes. They have to have the exact same sound at the end like moon & noon.

couldn't you call it half rhyme, near rhyme, off rhyme, or slant rhyme? thats still rhyming.

EddieMcD 28-07-2001 18:34

But not true rhyming.

Er. .

Saying rhyme by itself lacks a sufficient adjective, so it can therefore be interpreted as any of the above. However, if you wish to enforce the rule that they must have the same ununciation (sp?) in order for them to rhyme say "The words xxx and yyy don't fit my definition of rhyme because they zzz rhyme, rather than full rhyme". . replacing xxx, yyy and zzz accordingly

Clark Gilbert 28-07-2001 19:10

Rhyming

No one ever said anything about TRUE rhyming so he should be able to do all the others....right?

just some obviouse help

mike o'leary 28-07-2001 19:45

i gotta agree with david here. it sounds the same to me. therefore it rhymes to me.

Definitions of rhyme:

verb: compose rhymes
noun: a piece of poetry
noun: correspondence in the sounds of two or more lines (esp. final sounds)

erkle and purple definately have a "correspondence in sound"

Carolyn Duncan 29-07-2001 00:03

Eddie, you shoulda learned this by now. Haven't you read Shakespeare's poetry? If anyone makes any negative remarks about Shakespeare I'll scream so loud your monitor will crack! There are even such rhymes as forced rhymes that really don't sound anything alike. They are still considered to be rhymes. Nothing in the English language is without exception so...

Do ya get it now? You don't have to understand it or even like it but face it, that's the way it is. You can't change it so don't make yourself seem uneducated (I'm not saying that you are just that you make it sound that way by your comments).

mike o'leary 29-07-2001 16:38

the one place i thought i was safe from shakespeare...

Carolyn Duncan 29-07-2001 16:50

There's nothing wrong with Shakespeare. If you remember, on the old forums there was a thread about fav. quotes, Shakespeare shwed up a lot. It's really not that bad if you read the good plays.

mike o'leary 29-07-2001 19:02

yeah, well ill have to remember to tell my english teachers that. but i dont know...cuz even if you read good ones the teachers still gonna take a month per act and completely analyze the goodness out of it.

EddieMcD 29-07-2001 19:27

Technically, it's not rhyming Carolyn. Read Joelster's reply.

"A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet"

People were talking earlier about making up words to make things rhyme. Has anyone ever read the poem Jaberwocky by Lewis Carroll? My freshman English teacher, the loon she was, made us replace all of the non-sense words with real words, keeping the same rythm and rhyme sceme to the poem. Needless to say, I didn't complete that assignement (oops!). The words are below.

~Angela who never thought she would ever mention freshman English again
---------------------------
The Jaberwocky

By Lewis Carroll

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought-
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffing through the tugey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jaberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did grye and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

EddieMcD 30-07-2001 12:52

And I thought my English teachers were bad...

I LOVE that poem, i memorized it because nonsense poetry is SUCH an ispiration to my own work. Well goto go
Flair - Chock one more post on that board!

Carolyn Duncan 30-07-2001 20:27

Through the Looking Glass and Alice in Wonderland are the next best thing to Shakespeare. The Walrus and the Carpenter is one of my favs. I also like You are Old Father William. Based on jOelsters post it is rhyming, just not the traditional rhyme to which you are refering, Eddie. Trust me. I know about English classes, why do you think I like Shakespeare so much?
...forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of love, make up my sum.
Shakespeare is really romantic, and most people wouldn't realize it if you used some of his lines (hint hint Eddie, use this to your advantage)

EddieMcD 31-07-2001 14:46

Wait a sec: I think I have an idea that doesn't involve blowing something up! YES!

Thank you Carolyn.

Carolyn Duncan 31-07-2001 23:24

I'm afraid to ask.

EddieMcD 01-08-2001 10:22

You should be.

mike o'leary 01-08-2001 21:13

Uh, no Carolyn, not basketball.

Carolyn Duncan 02-08-2001 16:17

Oh, well. That was my first thought. Now that I think about it, how could I have thought that? Edie doesn't strike me as much of an athlete.
