Team in Colonial Williamsburg Area

Hello there, children!

I'm an NH transplant at the College of William and Mary who is looking for a team to work with. I'm car-less, and would need to be able to rely on public transport to get there.

I may not even be able to fit it in with my schedule, but I can certainly try. I'm not even sure there *are* any teams in this part of VA...but figured I would try.

Williamsburg itself doesn't have any FIRST teams, though I've tried talking my sister into helping start one at her High School there. (My niece is engineering bound and my nephew is now at Va. Tech. - it's the Scottish blood)

I think the closest team to you is Team 122 (http://www.team122.org ) in Hampton about 30 miles East on 64. W&M probably has a shuttle bus that makes that run.

In the other direction you'd have to go all the way to Richmond ~45 min to an hour, then there are a lot of teams. Public transportation around the city is pretty good, but the overall travel time would be a schedule killer.

Hmm...

Yeah. That is a problem, especially given my current rather hectic schedule.

Is your sister still in the area? I mean, it's too late to start a team this year, but maybe next year (if I'm still at this godforsaken school) we could work something out...

I'll check on transportation to Hampton. It's strange because, as I told Dave Lavery, www.usfirst.org lists NO FIRST teams in the state of Virginia in their mentor finding program.

But thanks for the info, Mark.

W&M, eh? Jon Stewart comes from there.

Yeah, there is very few teams on the coast, maybe you could work on making new teams? If you don't want to, you could always make the hour treck to the tons of teams in Richmond....

Yeah. Looks like this year it might not work, given my lack of automobile. However, maybe I can lobby for a team at Lafayette High...

There are currently 48 teams signed up from Virginia. See the list here.

The FIRST team database has been cutting in and out all week, so they must be doing some work on it. If you get an empty screen just try again later.

No, see, if you click the "find a mentor" link here, and select VA, it says there are no teams available.

Thankfully, Dave pointed me towards that list--as well as the other help I have received in this forum.

Edit: You're right. The database had been cutting out.

There is a new Senior Mentor in VA, Kathy Helms. Wait a couple of days to get the FIRST IT system to accept her email khelms@usfirst.org. She just finished training and then can try to help or direct you.

Thanks. I've been checking, though, and it looks like public transport can't even get me anywhere in town...so I may just help my old team on breaks and try to work on something more local for next year.

But I'll keep an eye out...and thanks everyone!

Hello. I was wandering on the google site and saw your post on teams in Virginia on the Peninsula. I am sorry that we did not know of your situation. We are team #122 the New Horizons NASA Knights in Hampton Virginia. We are near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel approximately one hour from Richmond and about 40 minutes ( if you do the speed limit) from Williamsburg. There is also 3 more teams in the area close to ours and they are 1)Team #345 Norfolk Technical High School in Norfolk which is about 35 minutes away 2)Team #1137 from Mathews High School in Gloucester, which is about 45 minutes 3) Team #769 Landstown High School which is in Virginia Beach about 55 minutes away. Hope that this helps. It is never too late to help a team!! There are no shuttles from Williamsburg to Hampton that I know of. Let me know if there is anything we can do to help.
Good luck and hope to see you at the Richmond VCU competition.
