Re: 2006 NJ Regional

The NJ regional was an awesome time. While we hit a few roadblocks with our robot, we did sort things out (just in time to ship to Philly :) ) and we still had a lot of fun. Aside from being a little chilly, I was impressed with the venue. I was in the pits on most of the day on Thurs. and Fri. and when I watched a few of the final matches on Sat. I was also surprised to see just how spirited the crowd was - it was great!

Thanks to all of the volunteers! Congrats to all of the teams!

Re: 2006 NJ Regional

There is one last point that should be added to this discussion in the context of rules and officiating, if only to inform future discussion (be it civil or uncivil) on disqualification calls and non-calls. This thread might not be the right one for this, but I'll post it anyway because it needs to be pointed out. FIRST has either limited or clarified the conditions for disqualification, depending on your perspective.

FIRST did not include in this year's game rules the following sentence from last year's <G25> (of which I was a most vocal critic):
Quote:

"If the tipping, entanglement, or damage occurs where it is not a part of normal game play, at the referee’s discretion, a 10-point penalty will be assessed, and the offending team/ROBOT may be disqualified from that match."
This year <G22> lists several specific guidelines and concludes:
Quote:

"In all cases involving robot-to-robot contact, the Head Referee may assess a 5-point penalty and the robot may be disqualified, subject to these guidelines."
FIRST wants to avoid the type of subjective judgment calls by referees that affected the results of regionals last year, which is why they changed <G25> of 2005 to the much more narrowly-tailored <G22> of 2006. A disqualification here or in any similar situation would have been an indefensible call.
