This is a fantasy, not a reality.

Well, only the important thing to remember is that only parts of the field need to be assembled, like in 2004.

My point is not that it's not possible to make a robot that can work underwater for a reasonable price.

The intended point was that to garantee all the teams built a safe robot and mitigate the risks to FIRST would have to "mistake proof" the kit with "inherently safe" parts this driving up the the cost of the kits.

Well it hink the safety part is more a factor than the price...we made ours (see my post above) for about $50 each. However, it's generally not a good idea to mix water and electronics unless you KNOW what you're doing. I don't think FIRST would put that high schoolers in that kind of situation..land robots are dangerous enough

Hey,

It's now 9 hours :ahh: away from the kickoff and I'm probably going to have my last good night of sleep for the next 6 weeks. So let's just get in bed  and just clear your mind, as tomorrow, you will need every square inch of your brains to hold all the stuff they'll throw at us :yikes: . Well, good luck and hope to see you at one of the events!

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

Nuttyman is right. While waterproofing a robot is indeed a formidable task, it is nothing next to constructing a giant underwater practice field.

Look, even if FIRST did supply us with, say, an inflatable swimming pool that measured the size of the field (throw in an air compressor for the sake of not being lightheaded), what teams are going to have the place to set that up? On my parquet floor? Bro, they won't allow a bottle of Aquafina in my gym, much less a swimming pool. And you think a school would spring for filling/emptying a swimming pool on a regular basis? Hello, water bill and imminent flooding.

Look, to get an underwater game, FIRST would have to do one of two things:

A) Find a way to provide every team with a magical swimming pool that filled itself, did no damage to gym floors, cost no more money than a normal field setup (in the hundreds of dollars lets say)

or

B) Allow only teams with incredible resources and/or sponsors with personal pools to have testing before the match.

Won't happen, man. Not even close. Think of the basic problems! It would be institutionally irresponsible of FIRST--and contrary to their basic messages of fairness, especially to new vs. established teams--to bring an underwater game to the fore.

That said...8 hours till kickoff.

Pete,

You are not thinking diabolical enough... Imagine an outdoor game played on a parking lot... No protection from the elements (OK, maybe a tent for the spectators)...

Think of it... Every school has a parking lot (so no whining over incredible resources)... And so does every venue...

You might say that it is not fair that one regional is in Rochester, NY and another is in Orlando, FL on the same weekend...

You might also say that it is not fair if it begins to downpour halfway through the finals...

Who ever claimed that this was a fair contest?

Think of the educational possibilities! Chaos theory as applied to weather prediction and last minute frost heaves! Ya gotta love it...

Just thank your lucky stars I'm not designing these games... ;-)

Keep Smiling and Good Night...

Mike

According to randomness, yes. But I'm not sure if we have enough random noise yet... :D

More stuff about a water game or other nonsensical stuff and me might just be there, though!

Good luck everyone! I'm sure I'll wonder what they're doing to us after the kickoff again this year.

Maybe FIRST could try having a water competition with Vex robots as a test at actually doing it for FRC? It'd be an interesting way to see if it's feasible.

And outdoor games would give such a huge advantage to us Arizona teams... provided the competition is no later than mid-April.

i still believe that SOMEDAY (not this year, probably not the next) FIRST will find a way to make an underwater game feasible, but until then, we're stuck as land-lubbers. I like the idea of previewing/testing with VEX...that could be a LOT more workable

Well we were all wrong.

Except for M. Kraus, who got referenced by Woody. Nice find there.

There were definitely a lot of differently interpreted things, and a lot of things in the game not alluded to in the hint.

Oh well.

I'll buy that explanation.

To go further, Shovel = Spade = David Spade (Actor in Show called "Just SHoot Me")

Shovel's show = "Just Shoot Me"

tangling pasta is more like the pool noodle bumpers

I think it's worth mentioning how right we were on some of the aspects of this years game, and how dead wrong we were on others. :yikes:

For the majority of us, we were looking the wrong way, again!

Arkorobotics 07-01-2006 16:00

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

I WAS RIGHT! pools noodles have to be used for bumper (2-1/2 inch), that is why they are tangled in PASTA! W00T!

Nuttyman54 07-01-2006 16:12

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

i thought teh pasta could also refer to the chains behind the high circle goal..

Beta Version 07-01-2006 16:17

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

Yeah, they are really pushing to have noodle bumpers this year (tangled in pasta), they arent even includig the bumbers in the weight limit. And I guess the balls could be the "meatbals" hitting the "pasta" on the robots

but I dont get the "montana" part

i think it was Joe Montana with the field goals and the comeback (last 40 second free-for-all) Also, Montana is flat on one end and hilly on the other..hence the ramp on the ends

Petey 07-01-2006 17:05

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

Yeah Joe Montana was a red herring (what field goals are you talking about?). And I bet you "tangling with pasta" doesn't refer to pool noodle bumpers because

A) bumpers aren't mandatory
B) 5 bots deal with the "pasta" net behind center, while all deal with the bumpers.

I don't think the hint was necessarily related to the game in the same way we expected.

--Petey

ZZII 527 07-01-2006 18:22

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

The Montana clue hinted that there would be end zones, as in football, rather than a central ramp.

I thought of mandatory noodle bumpers last night at around mindight...thought it was a far stretch but I guess not.

What....it wasn't obvious to you guys???? :p

Close, It actually refers to another TV show "Just Shoot Me" in which case the game is most likely going to involve projectiles.

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

This is my interpretation of what the clue means.

five 'bots tangling with pasta

Means - 5 foot tall robots fighting with bumpers made of pool noodles

a game piece obsessed with a shovel's show

Means - what the others have said about David Spade.

and seeing Montana's green heights

Means - The high green light for the camera to track.

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

I talked to Dave after the kickoff about the clues. This is what he told me

5 'bots tangling with pasta
-- referencing the only five robots on one side of the field. The pasta is talking about the bumpers with the pool noodles.

Shovels show
-- the David spade "just shoot me" hind that woody gave us. The piece wants to be shot into the end zone

seeing Montana's Green Heights
-- while he didn't expressly talk about this one, he said it obviously had to do with the vision camera and that the Joe Montana references were included

another hint was given earlier "hovercraft's, and the English Channel"
-- this clue referred to the general shape of the field. the English channel has hover craft stations on both sides that when viewed from the side resemble the field. Empty in the middle, and high on the sides.

I forgot to ash about the batons

So what was the bargain thing that FIRSTWA got at the kickoff? Was it a bunch of Poof-Slinky balls or field pieces or what?
'Just wondering after all of the hype.

edit- Forget it, I found the answer to that question HERE.

gondorf 14-01-2006 18:31

Re: 2006 Official Game Hint Discussion

i say that the five bots tangling with pasta is because of 5 bots and the pasta is the pool "noodles" bumper.

the shoveling is to shovel the balls into the mechanism to shoot and the green heights is to track the special green light

this is kinda a part but the guy at the kick off said something about "just shoot me" i wonder what that means
