Weather for the Novi Kickoff
The weather for the NOVI KICKOFF was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.
Of the 30 people on our team that were going to go there only me, my friend, and our Lead Mentor (Paul J. Hudy) made it to see the kickoff. 5 more people from our team came in 3 hours late because they closed all the highways. Now to actually talk about the weather... It was drizzleing all night and all day. You don't think thats bad, but the roads tell a different story... We left our house at 7:00 A.M. for what should be a 35 minute drive. I forgot something at home, I ran back, got the item, ran back, and slipped all the way down our road (it's sort of on a hill). When I finally got in the car we realized their was something really wrong! we drove down the street, tryed to make a turn, and we almost ended up on the curb :ahh: . Than we drove down one more street and then we got onto a sort-of-main road. That road wasn't that bad. We got onto I-696 and we were going 45 as it was semi-icey. Than, about half way in, all hell (and if that word is offending or against any of the Chief Delphi rules, i won't mind if the word changed) broke loose! The highway was no longer a highway, it was an ice arena. We skided about 500 ft luckily just missing the car in front of us. Everyone formed a 2 mile parking lot. Some of us got out of our cars. As a group in the front of the line,we decided to move at about 5 mph. so we all started moving again. as we were moving, we averaged counting 4 accidents per mile. As we were driving, one car that flipped over caught on fire. Later, we merged onto I-96. Their was a 10 (degree) slope to the right on the road. It merged to 2 lanes. We were on the Right lane. A truck was on the left lane. We let the truck get farther down the road. About 10 feet after it passed us, it just slipped all the way down to the safety lane. We were lucky because if we did just go even with the truck, we would have gotten smashed. Luckily, the next exit was ours. We went onto the onramp. People were slipping right over the sides of the ramp. Luckily, for the last mile and a half we followed a salt truck to the school. Half way between the ramp an the school, we were stopped at a railroad crossing for about 15 minutes as the conductor of the train made a good call and slowed down. Finally, we made it to Novi High School for the kickoff! |
Re: Weather for the kickoff
It was HORRIBLE. I went to go warm up my Jeep around 7am and felt a few drops and though nothing of it. Meet up with the team at school, and left at 7:30. We were gonna take 23, but the radio said there was a bad accident, so we took 75. Go past Monroe on 75 and it started to get worse...so everyone slowed down. Once we got on 275, we saw accidents every half mile. Traffic was between 5 mph and a stand still. I saw 2 semis go from the on ramp, and cross 3 lanes of traffic into the ditch. I exited at one exit to take Haggerty to miss some of the accidents and got back on...but it was till horrible. On Haggerty, people were getting stuck in intersections becuase it was so icey. One of my team members did a 720 across 3 lanes to the shoulder...luckily it was like 8am and she didnt hit anyone, but she was so starttled she drove home and didnt even go to kick-off. I slid a bit, at one point, I went off the highway to drive in the rumble strip/gravel to keep traction. I slid sideways a bit and forward about 20ft one time, but nothing major. Half the people on the road, including myself, had their 4-ways on so the morons still doing 45mph would see them slowing down/stopping and not run into the back off them. Some guy was actually tailgating me in this weather.
This weather turned a 1 hour trip into an over 3 hour ordeal. All in all, everyone who went, made it there and back safely. |
Re: Weather for the kickoff

Re: Weather for the kickoff
I think michigan was hit the hardest this year for kickoff. At about 10:00 am they shut down all the highways.

Re: Weather for the kickoff
And I thought it was horrible and annoying for me to have to go 15 mph the whole way there...

Re: Weather for the kickoff
We always have snow here around kickoff in Indiana, but this year it was so nice out and a great way to kick off the season.
