EastvsMidwestvsWest

Their has been a lot of talk about which region is better and which would dominate over the other. The first thing I heard mentioned after the game was announced was that the midwest was going to get a run for their money this year. This got me thinking, who would actually dominate in this game? The midwest teams produce tough robots, and the west/east coasts produce robots that are tough defenders, but are also excellent players (i am not saying midwest teams aren't great players ;) ). This year's game encorporates everything and they all seem to be important in their own way (defense/playing well). So maybe you can help me to figure this out, who is going to come out "on top" in the 2006 game "Aim High"? (Yes I do realize it's early, but I think we can make predictions based on previous years)

I did refer to the old thread, but I think circumstances may have changed after the new game was released.

GO 1403!!!

Well, there's lots of parallels with football.

And everyone knows the West Coast Offense was pure genius when it was first introduced ;).

Though you can't really beat Brazil in the soccer aspects of the game, right? :p

We did pick up a trick or two from the '74 Clockwork Orange "Total Soccer " as well ;)

I believe that although the different regions do often show trends towards being remarkably good at one area, say defense, or scoring, or some sort of common strategy between a region. Really it comes down to the team, and the group that makes up that team that year, and a whole lota luck.

Personaly i would say watch out for the threat from the far east or the far west...who knows what the teams from outside North America are going to come up with, and they often bring some amazing robots to competition.

All kidding and niceties aside. Midwest is where its at! Can i get a what what from my homies in the corn fizields?!

Yes Koko...but what an opportunity to start right back up again! The defense of the northeast region is going to go on display this year with the basic promotion of the defensive principles in this years game. We as New Englanders have been frusterated long enough with our inability to flaunt what we know best...and this year we get that opportunity. At the conclusion of this years kickoff, I walked up to one Mr. Andy Baker and we both smiled at each other with the idea of the defensive game and said "It's On". I think with that one moment there was an understanding....this northeast vs. midwest vs. west vs. Canada. vs. Brazil vs. etc... is going to come to life this year.

In the offseason I think most people agree there are two major events...

The midwest has IRI, the Northeast has Battlecry. I think that these two events need to showcase the best of the best in the country. I know this much...this will be my first year attending IRI and I am hoping to see a bunch of northeasterners make a mark. My question to the rest of the country is...are you willing to make the trek to Worcester Mass. to settle this score?

Its on folks!

Understandably so! And honestly I'm partial to River Rage 10!

The reason why I mention IRI and Battlecry is that while Rah Cha Cha is probably a great event...it is relitavely young and it takes place in October. I also in the same way didn't mention River Rage eventhough it being the oldest offseason competition going into a landmark year....it too lies in October. I feel that there is a better chance for teams to travel to events in the summer...i.e. Battlecry and IRI.

Though Koko...if I am not tied up by another competition this year, I hope to come out to Rochester and see what the event is all about!

It's true.
Rah Cha CHa is young and all but we got something even IRI can't top. John V. Nuen MCing!

And after he's done MCing you can smash him in the face with a pie. HOW COOL IS THAT?

the midwest has won the most championships, its a fact, not to boast or anything, but the most championship winners come from MI or the GLRegional
last year, hot and frogforce.. ( with beach bots )
but i do like the coast teams, they bring more spirit to the cometitions IMO

Obviously the east is going to win (I come from Maryland).

Just kidding.

I'm not sure what inherent advantages the West and Midwest have. I know that the East has been doing it longer. The X-Cats, the Cheesypoofs, all the low numbered teams that have been at this year after year.

Just to let you know that statement isn't entirely factual. The Cheesy poofs come from California area, and in 1998 they restructured the team numbers and kept them the same from year to year, before that it was whenever you signed up was your number.

The Cheesypoofs are from San Jose, California. I think that makes them a West Coast team.

My money's on Brazil or Israel, they put out robots that are a bit more classy (aesthetically speaking) than your average humdrum U.S.-ian robot ;). They have some unique advantages and disadvantages though:

1) Brazil builds during what I believe is their main vacation from school... (if I recall correctly)
2) They get their KOP much later
3) In Israel students need to have a "senior project" of sorts, and for most FIRST student's, the robot is that project and they can dedicate a lot of effort to it.

since everyone moves down florida anyways from the northeast and midwest we have the best of both worlds....whether the northeast or midwest wins....i chalk it up as a win for florida but we all know i won't have to do that cause a florida team will win it all

Yes! I truly believe that this year is finally the year a team from Florida is a part of the World Championship alliance. The Florida Regional is shaping up to be one of the toughest out there and last year we had my old team (108) make it to Einstein, 179 made the finals on Archemedies, plus several other teams make it deep, and this is hopefully the year we break through.

i can't say much for most of the country but the east coast will dominate, however wouldnt it be cool if the top alliances in Atlanta were composed of a bot from each team? or even better alliance with all east vs all midwest vs west?

Re: EastvsMidwestvsWest

If you have ever been to the philly regional you know that, that drexel gym is rockin wiht hardcore robotics..this year it will be crazy so I'm going with the East Coast on this one, Also alot of teams on the east coast are older so they have more expirence but it is anyone's game. I think this year it will be interesting to see the east coasts Defense and the Midwest flair at nats. This year will be one for the ages

Freddy Schurr 22-02-2006 20:49

Re: EastvsMidwestvsWest

Its the East Coast by far, we got Teams 365.191.341.203.204.357.56.84.211.103.104.173.177. 316.444.433.484 and plenty other East Coast Teams.

However, if you have a working robot after the 6 week build season and it works perfectly at your regional, it doesn't matter what region you are from.

Here are the last four years of championship results:

2002
173 East Hartford, CT
71 Hammond, IN
66 Ypsilanti, MI

2003
111 Schaumburg, IL
469 birmingham, MI
65 Pontiac, MI

2004
71 Hammond, IN USA
494 Goodrich, MI USA
435 Raleigh, NC USA

2005
330 Hermosa Beach,CA
67 Milford, MI
503 Novi, MI

It's a little hard to ignore the trends.

I think the Championships should be at Ford Field detroit, MI in the future. :)

Does anyone have the results from pre-2002

I think the NERDS are looking to reverse that trend a little this year. Here's to a New England sweep!!! If not...I think we'll be out to prove something come offseason time.
