Are YOU AP's slave?

Well everyone, AP testing starts tommorrow and continues for two weeks. After that, well school is pretty much over. Sure, there are the regular finals, but those are nothing compared to AP courses.

I know for the past week or so, I've locked myself up in my room reviewing everything. I am nothing but a slave to AP and the College Board. Who is being oppressed with me?

Harrison 05-05-2002 13:42

*protests the poll* There are people here who do not have 'AP' things in their country...GO CANADA :)

lol

Am I to assume that the AP is for harder courses? or at least more advanced levels...

Melissa Nute 05-05-2002 13:45

I'm constantly studying..bleh..finals and aps suck..
yes, harrison, aps are harder courses...pass the test and you can get college credit...

Harrison 05-05-2002 13:47

Ahhh...same sorta thing here...

We have U, M, and C level courses...

U denotes University level (which is the hard stuff).
M is a combo os U and C...basically the medium level.
C is for College level (the easy stuff).

srawls 05-05-2002 13:51

I'm taking ap computer science, but I'm not worried about it. I haven't even finished reading the case study yet ... speaking of that I should prolly go read that now :) Seriously, maybe I'm in the minority here, but I haven't studdied more than 20 minutes in the past 2 months for the ap test, and I'm not stressed out. Maybe I will be next year when I have ap government, ap physics c, and ap calculus bc, but now that I only have ap comp sci ab, I'm stress free. (wow, you gotta love all those stupid letters at the end of each course :))

Stephen

DanL 05-05-2002 13:52

Yeah, AP Comp Sci is supposed to be the easiest AP course, or thats what I've heard anyways. My brother is taking it this year, I'm taking next year. This year, I'm taking AP Bio and AP World History. WHAP doesn't seem to be so bad, but Bio - oh god, so much reading.... urge to burn rising.... rising....

Harrison, whats the difference between Universities and Colleges in Canada? In the US, the two terms are interchangable for the most part - that is, they both refer to school after high school. Sounds like up there, university-level is higher than college level?

Harrison 05-05-2002 13:56

Universities are considered higher level than colleges.

DanL 05-05-2002 13:59

Higher meaning higher quality of education, or higher as in high school is 'higher' than middle school?

oh that is kewl...

actually dan, universities for the most part are schools that have both b.a and b.s. and graduate courses....colleges just have b.a. and b.s.

Higher as in harder...Tuffer courses...

But Uni's and Colleges are a little different as well...

Uni's deal with a lot of theory...College's are more hands on...

Altho a uni grad will tend to end up making more money...

Kristina 05-05-2002 14:30

Last year I can say that I was a slave to AP tests...I had 4 (french, language & composition, physics, us history) and that really was not fun. I had AP composition & french on the same day, 8 hours of solid testing!

This year I only have one less but most of them don't really matter. I can't get any more english credits after last year so no worries about ap lit. I love gov so I do really well in that class so I'm not worried. Then there's AP Calc BC and I don't get to bypass math at UCLA even if I pass it.

And while I'm not really worried about the tests, I still do hold resentment against the monopoly known as the college board. Time to bust out the Sherman Anti-Trust act (wow, my history teacher would be so proud of me right now! jk)

Katie Reynolds 05-05-2002 14:53

I'm taking AP World History... but I'm not taking the AP test. I decided that it was just of my $$ to get a bad grade on it! history is dumb anyway ::grumbles::

- Katie

Suike 05-05-2002 14:55

I'm taking AP English III, AP American History and AP Computer Science AB... FUN STUFF!!!

Ameya 05-05-2002 15:03

Hehe, I've got AP Calc BC on Tuesday, but I'm spending most of my studying for my AP European History test on Friday. As for AP Chemistry, I'm not touching that until after the Euro test is over :P

IsabelRinging 05-05-2002 15:28

AP's slave? Hrmmph.

I'm a slave to IB.

9 more days....

and to all you people who think you have it bad, i believe i can top you all. not only am i taking two ap courses in my sophmore year (APWH and AP Bio), but the AP Bio test is on my birthday. yes, that's right. i don't get to sleep late, or goof off, i get to go into school, and pretty much horrible fail a test (well, that's how the AP's are designed). whoop-de-beeping-do! on the plus side, i think after the exam is over (it's a morning one), i think i can get my dad to take me down to the DMV, in the middle of the day, so the line *should* be shorter.

i guess the only good thing about my birthday being the day it is, my present is that after i take the test, i get to forget everything i learned, and literally dumb myself down for the regents (i hate NY!!).

oh well, 9 more days until freedom, and hopefully till i can get my learner's permit. from now until then though, will be pure hell.

gah! I walk away for 3 hours, and about 10 more people post... :)

What I meant is that people use the terms interchangibly. You don't hear someone saying, "I'm going to a university" that often - usually they say, "I'm going to college" - even if they are going to a university. Yeah, technically there's a difference, but not in the eyes of most people. Harrison made it sound as if there is a major difference in Canada, so I was just asking =D

Oh, and Ian, happy birthday in 9 days ;-)

Jan Olligs 05-05-2002 18:12

I'm lucky beacuse I just have the easy APs (i.e. Science and similar). My APs: Calc BC, Chem, CS AB. And to studying - why study for something as easy as math or science? My evil tests are going to be tomorrow - French (okay, maybe not...) and American History...

Clark Gilbert 05-05-2002 18:19

Indiana AP

Indiana has AP classes...but one cool thing is that to get the college credits you dont need to take the AP test...:p

First off...this only applies if u go to a college in Indiana. There is a state college called Ivy Tech..and if you are in an AP class or a similar hard class (Pre-Calc, not AP)...they will give you college credits for that class as long as you fill out the necessary paper work...

Then if you go to a college in Indiana, for a really cheap fee they will transfer those credits from Ivy Tech to the college you are attending....basically making the AP test a waste of money and time here:)

Ohhh, I believe I can beat that, at least through my ordeals last year.

As I posted before, I had 4 AP tests, two of which were on the same day. The day before I had the two tests in the same day, I got into a car accident. It also happened to be the week of my campaigning for student body president...a very brutal, mudslinging and exhausting election in which I lost. It wasn't my birthday, but I did have to take my math final on my birthday. I think if I were on Knotting Hill, I would have won the brownie for the most pathetic story.

Ian W. 05-05-2002 21:27

hmm, maybe i wont' take 4 ap's next year...

with my luck, i'll always have an ap test on my birthday. stupid may birthdays...

Jon Lawton 06-05-2002 15:09

Silly High School Students...

Dual enroll in some community college *NOW*. Get out of high school while you still have hope! :P

Suike 07-05-2002 00:03

Well lucky for me I get AP English on Thursday morning, take the hour break or whatever it is and then take the AP Computer Science test. Thursday is half day at our school too so that means I'll be staying after just to take some test. But wait, it gets better... I'm in a magnet program and have to drive 40min each way just to get to and from school and on Friday we have off, except for those lucky individuals who are taking the AP American History exam like me in the morning. So to sum it up, on a half day, I get to stay after and take an AP test not forget to mention that I got two tests in one day. And then on Friday, my day off, I have to wake up early and drive to school just to torture myself with the AP American History test!! w00t!! I LUV SCHOOL!!

prtynpink5 07-05-2002 21:43

AHH oh my god, the AP English test sucked this year!! On part one, there were 5 poems and prose pieces instead of 4 and so here I am timing myself for 4 and then i realize there is a 5th and i only had like 2 minutes left :( BLAH SCREW AP!

Kristina 07-05-2002 21:55

AP English

Hey, the exact same thing happened to me! I was all pacing myself thinking there were only 4 pieces and turned to the last page thinking I would use my minutes answering more questions about the same prose piece. Ohhh...how wrong I was when I saw a new sonnet, grrr! I liked the first and third essays though. I didn't do as well as usual but ok i guess, unlike on that devilish calculus test.

prtynpink5 07-05-2002 21:58

Yea, but i thought the poem about the titanic was good too, it was pretty easy. I dunno I kinda messed up the essay where you choose a book, blah I just got really confused on which characters went with which books. YAY ONLY 4 MORE APS TO GO! SPANISH, PROGRAMMING, AMERICAN, BIO!

nekonoai 03-03-2003 18:08

You people know nothing of the pain of AP!!! Last semester I had 5 APs! Luckily some were only temporary:) ! My schedule was as follows:

Day 1:

AP Calc BC
AP Eng IV
Band
AP Government

Day 2:

AP Calc BC
AP Physics
Band
AP Economics

Let me tell you...boy was a ready when band rolled around during the school day!

nekonoai 03-03-2003 18:11

Hola prtynpink5

Got a quick question for ya. The poem about the titanic, was is written by Thomas Hardy? I can't remember the name.

Da SPAMinatress 03-03-2003 18:25

forget AP, i'm in IB... and i'm not sure what i was thinking, but its my last year, so i can suck it up and deal with it, or atleast i can try my best

"IB.... Ignorance is Bliss"

srjjs 03-03-2003 19:08

Around here IBO stands for International Biology Olympiad.
Hooray for AP!

Kiwi_queen 03-03-2003 21:33

AP

If it weren't for the fact that my fave teacher <cough, cough> Mr. Cokeley (also our Robotics coach) is in charge of AP Biology, I'd probably have dropped out of the course ages ago. Luckily, though I may only be barely passing, at least it's fun 'cuz Cokeley rules. Too bad I'm still not doin well at it. hah!

FAKrogoth 04-03-2003 20:04

I'm taking four tests, but in may. :D
Calc BC (In an AB class; hard to stay motivated)
English Lit
US Government
Physics C Mech (Independent study, so I can also take orchestra and gov; cool/useful subject, no distractions, easy to be motivated, now that 'bot is shipped)

I've got it pretty easy, 'cause nothing can be as hard as AP US History. I got a 3, because I was concise. Remember, the more times you repeat what you say, (Until a logical limit), the higher your score.

John Bono 04-03-2003 21:12

SO true, FAK.
Anyway, I make AP my bizzatch. Honestly, last year I slid by with a C in AP US History, netting a four on the AP. I expect to repeat the process with 3 I'm taking this year.

Ian W. 04-03-2003 21:17

yay for year old topics?

oh well, another year has passed, and instead of 4 APs, i'm taking three :p. screw english :)

AP Physics AB
AP US
AP CS AB

not too bad, not exactly a blast either. oh well, extra college credit never hurt anyone.

The two AP bio teachers at our school are also involved with robotics! It might not be just a coincidence.

Jeff Waegelin 05-03-2003 11:31

I'm taking AP Chemistry and AP English (both parts) this year. I took AP Calculus BC last year, so I'm taking math classes at Oakland University right now.

Sorry but I've gotta disagree. I'll preface this fact by admitting that I couldn't pass a math or science AP test back in the day but I did get a 5 on my AP US History, Gov & Politics, and English. In all of my history/english essays I was very concise and had my standard way of answering all the questions. Lil historical background intro ending with a clear and poignant thesis. Each paragraph started with what I was going to talk about then I had my points followed by 2-3 sentences to prove each one. Then in the conclusion wrap it all up by rewording your thesis and say how it set a precedent for the future.

That's basically my advice to any of you taking these humanitarian AP's: get down your system because when it comes to the test, time flies. Both my history and English teachers were graders for the college board and let me tell you, they like elevated diction but detest BS.

I know that they're still two months away but good luck you all and don't stress too much. I know a lot of colleges (like UCLA) are reforming their gen ed's so that AP's won't let you bypass what you think you're passing out of but they still will help you get in. Also, despite the fact that they say they place less emphasis on it, grades still are on the top of the priority list so don't let them slip.
