2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Who's going? Who might be going? Who's excited? I know I am.
|
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Who wouldn't be excited?
FLR 2005 was one of the best events I've attended. I know I'm planning on making the trip up from Texas to see what those crazy Rochester teams have in 2006. |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Finger Lakes? Water ? What's up? Is Christine coming? Can I bring whipped cream?
I'll be there for sure!!!!! |

Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
For it's first year doing the FRC in 2005, the Gordon Field House at Rochester Institute of technology was a great venue.
1) Good-sized pit area and space to queue-up for matches 2) Great mosh pit for dancing at one end of the field 3) Great seating on both "long-sides" of the field 4) Great music, great MC's, great campus food, etc. Looking forward to MUCH MORE of the same this year. And, if the Rochester weather holds true, maybe the 'bots can startup their own snowball cannon fight in the parking lot...ha, ha. But human players are NOT allowed to throw snowballs on campus.....definately not GP as a guest of the university. See y'all there. All rookie teams MUST stop by Team 1511 Rolling Thunder pit for special meet & greet! |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
I will be there thisyear. ROOKIE year for TEam 1930 Delta Force will rock. Its going to be great meeting all of you. I definally will be at that social greeting with Team 1511 Rolling Thunder. I wouldn't miss it.

FLR rocked last year, Have to agree with JVN on it being one of the best regionals i've been too. No robotics for me this year :( I'll make my comeback next year. (unless im living the biodome lifestyle down in antartica for 6 weeks, hopefully it wont be a problem)

WHAT??? Which means no comedian? WAAAA!!!
|
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
It's definitely a shame that alot of the extras are being cut. To me this is a foreshadowing of things to come. Everyone is getting tighter and tighter with budgets (that's not new) but when will we end up not having the means to run the program anymore? I'm currently being asked to pinch whatever pennies we have and we've already been doing it for the last 7 years I've been involved already. From the looks of it we as volunteers already do more and more each year and sooner or later there will be a a limit that there won't be anymore volunteers left to run the program. Sure that's an extreme outlook but I think teams are being stretched too thin lately.
|
Finger Lakes Regional Social CANCELLED
Just a Notice to all teams Attending the Finger Lakes Regional, the Team Social Has been Cancelled :ahh:
Its too bad because last year was a blast, maybe we can get them to play the "Aim Low" Dodgeball Game (see white pages) |

Heres my awesome bot list from thurs: 229 Division by Zero (nice pneumatics) 191 X-Cats 1511 Rolling Thunder (after it got working) 1591 Greece Gladiators (ours, of course!!) 1126 Sparx |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
MY top few List.
I will not post about my team, 229. 1126 340 191 1559 1713 1901 |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
They had the RTS thign on the screen however it was not working correctly. That one match had 223 points scored. The Center goals works perfect yet the cornor goals would count 2 balls as 4 or 6 and if there was like 10 being put through its would add as many as 25-30 points,I hope they get it fixed, if not we better find some volunteers with a fast trigger finger. We dont need matches ending in controversy.
On a different note, some great teams -639 -1126 -229 -191 I think for the number of robots that we have, we really have some good teams at FLR this year |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Robots that caught my eye today (not including my own teams bot).
1559 (great autonomous mode) 229 (vomits out mass quanities :D and put on one heck of a show jumping straight off of the ramp ) 1126 (when combined with 229 made for an insane show) 1901 (tough little bugger) 1511 (once they got it put back together it worked well) 340 (Jason was busting my chops that it wasn't doing anything in the morning and it was perfectly fine) 211 ( A little unstable but nice shooting mechnism and autonomous mode) |

Thanks for sharing the photos, Ed. I look forward to seeing more soon.
It sure is hard sitting here, twiddling my thumbs, waiting for results at home. :( |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
I just got an update from Needel, he says 191 is in first with an 8-1 record, 1126 in second at 7-2, then a big old jumbled mess. 229 was sitting around 10thish/early teens.
He also said that the high score was about 109, 340-1126-229, that alliance is incredible. I dont know how the heck the randomizer spit that one out. |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Well... As day 2 of competition winds down. I just wanna say kudos to all the teams out there. All robots looked very impressive.
Congratz to 229, 340, and 1126 for setting the regional high score so far with 109. I just thought the match that got reset about 8 times before it actually went on was really funny. When they reset the system, they had everyone come onto the field and do the electric slide. It was originally gonna be a 3v2 match, but because of all the resets, it gave the other team enough time to come onto the field. I was very surprised to see JVN as MC this year. He's doing a really great job. CAN'T WAIT FOR TOMORROW!!!!! |

Corey,
We have some awesome competitors here as well, especially some of the rookie teams. It's definitely a greater variety with only 30 teams here vs Trenton's 63 teams since each team gets 13 matches each. Congratulations all today's award winners especially to FLR WFA Jason Rees of 340 and SparX for their Awesome controls - (Go Mike Bortfedlt and Team!) We sure do Xerox proud this weekend! Ellery |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Day 2 behind us...
First off all robots look good, We are doing the Rochester area proud Exceptional bots.. 191 229(High Score 109, "The Wall of Shooters") 639 1126(High Score 109, "The Wall of Shooters") 1511 1559 I know theres many more but I am exhausted. Congrats to Gary on our Website and of course Rees with his much deserving Woodie Flowers Award. Team 340 would not be where it is today with his undying dedication, I've never seen anyone take all of the "un-fun" in stride just for the good of the kids. Rees, you are the man! :) |

1126 looked amazing again today and i can't wait untill our match again with them tomorrow! this time 137 will go down! 191 has only 1 loss and that was from sparx. other then that im sorry i cant give more info as it would basically be our picking information. see yas tomorrow. also, 229, 1126 and 340 109 points FLR record. :P |

By the way, thanks to X-Cats and Circuit Stompers. You guys really helped us out! Congrats to all of the award winners. |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
FLR was awesome this year!
The finals were epic to the end! Congratulations to 1126, 229 and my old high school East High 1567. Also congratualtions to Jason Reese for the WFA and 340 for the Chairman's award! FLR was incredible again I cannot wait til next year! |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
I have to say "Great job, and thanks for bringing another fun and challenging FLR!"
I didn't find the finals as tense this year, compared to last year, but that's probably because it wasn't 1507 in there. However, I'll say, I was quite impressed with a good number of the bots you guys brought, and I wish you the best in future events. Some big congratulations are in order for 191, 250, 211, 1126, 229, 1567 and 340 for their exceptional work! |

What an amazing regional and last few final matches!
Ed, i was really scared that last match. We would have lost the match if we didn't get on the ramp by 1 point. :ahh: The atmosphere was great the whole time i was there and it stepped up in the last day with the eliminating rounds taking place. It is now my favorite place taking the spot away from buckeye. |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Thanks to 1126 and 229 for a truly intense experience.
Congratulations to Jason for the Woodie Flowers Award and to 340 for the Chairman's Award! Very impressive! |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
HEADS UP to the entire FIRST community, Team 1126 is dominant, they score all ten balls in autonomous and they pick up balls faster than any team I have seen yet. In the finals of FLR the won round 1 in a blowout, then I hear the wire to thier camera failed/broke and that's the only reason the other two matches were close. 1126 is extremely strong!

Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
The fact that 191, 250 and 211 were able to play pretty effective defense in the finals goes to show the importance of having two or more shooting threats on an alliance, particularly playing against such strong teams.
In our (and I use the term "our" very loosely, since all we did was strategy for teams 1591, 145 and 1585) semifinal match against the #1 alliance, we were never going to win without the shooting from our one 3 pt robot (1591). With this in mind, a two robot position defense in front of our own ramp wasn't feasible, since 229 would key on 1591 and stop them. We had to, then, send one robot (in game one it was 1585 and in game two it was 145) to stick to 229 in an effort to both shut down their offense and create space for 1591. This proved an impossible task. Of course, game two was over about ten seconds in. I'm curious as to whether the time out was for programming. Perhaps someone from the winning teams can comment on this, if it isn't a secret. We saw computers out, so we assumed that the auto modes were being changed so that either 1126 would shoot right from start, or 229 would set a pick (which is what ended up happening). We figured that we couldn't beat a pick, so we had to try to stop the former. In the case of 191, 250, and 211, all of them could shoot, so a positional defense becomes more viable, due to the fact that a defender could peel off and go shoot. This was, of course, helped by excellent driving (great job). I would have been interested to see what would have happened if 211 was assigned mostly to defense instead of 191, 191 having been the best shooter on the alliance up to that point, and 211 being a strong, solid robot. I guess the point is: like everyone else, I was impressed by the defense in the finals. |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional

Unfortunately it's wide body design made it impossible to get up on the ramp with us and 250 and if they made it we would have won. |

Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
What a great regional! Congratz to the regional winners 229, 1126 and 1567. Also congratz to the regional finalists 191, 250, and 211 for putting up an amazing show duing finals.
Also: thanks to 271 for choosing us and 1551 for being great alliance partners. I don't mean to complain right now... But did anyone else notice anything unusual about the matchups during qualifications? From our end, it seemed like we got into a lot one side domination matches(where are side got dominated). It is highly probable we just got really unlucky. It would just make me feel a lot better if I got confirmation one way or another. Unfortunately, this is the end of our season. We will try to make a few off-seasons. Thanks to everyone at FLR for making it great. Hope to see you all next year! |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
Well, I figure I'll address this since I spent the whole day behind the scoring table. The matches were generated by the software that FIRST/Hatch provided... I don't know what algorithms it uses, but I'll say that if that module works as well as the rest of the software you are probably on to something.
The software has lots of little problems and some big ones. I think Hatch needs to work on fixing the field portion of the software before they write up flashy guis that are over complicated. They also need to split the software up into smaller pieces with multiple applications. There is no need to have a match generator inside the field control software. (just as an example... there are many more...) |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
I agree, the algorithims were a constant thorn in our side. Sometimes a single alliance partner that we were with would become an opponent in the next match and vice versa. However, this also occured infrequently and you would end up facing the same teams again and again with virtually the same alliance. But this is just an observation.
Congratulations to all of the award winners and everyone who attended the regional. I along with Adam and Patrick on these forums travelled down to FLR to observe last year and reported back to our team on what a well-run regional it was, with great organization, great support and a great venue. I'm happy to say that everyone else on the team confirmed this for us! It proved to be way better than a day of macroeconomics classes. Quote:

Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
FLR was great. Personally I can't wait to cheer 1126 on at the Einstein Field. They are really impressive.
My burned in memory is going to be the qualification match with 1126, 229, and 340 all lined up at the bottom of the ramp waiting for the offense signal. 40 sec of continuous firing. Maybe only 2/3rds stayed in, but it was a really cool sight. 109 points made it the highest score of the day. I'm also sooo happy for my friend Jason Rees. He's the heart and soul of 340 and the reason I keep coming back. He's truly a remarkable person and completely deserving of the Woodie Flowers Award. |
Re: 2006 Finger Lakes Regional
