Rules for the Official Unofficial Robotics Film Contest

These are the rules for the Official Unofficial Robotics Film contest.

Purpose of the Contest

For Robotic teams to show talent through film and movie making.
Film requirements. If you need an example watch The Tetra of Evil

1. One film entry per team, even if the team consists of multiple schools.
2. Film must be at least 1 min long but no longer than 15 minutes, including credits. Film must have a story behind it; this consists, and is not limited to, a plot, characters, and a climax. Films also must incorporate robotics into their story in some way. Teams that submit a movie that consists of random segments of video and with music behind it will be disqualified.
3. Films must be under 100 MB. Use any compression you would like, films will be judged on content not quality.
4. For this contest films will be uploaded into www.Youtube.com (this website isn’t all that bad)
5. Try not to break any copyright laws :)
6. Teams must right a brief description of the Film on www.youtube.com
7. Name of the movie must be “FIRST [Team number]” without the quotes. Also within the Tag option on the upload screen type “FIRST [Team number] official unofficial robotics film contest” without the quotes. (This is so judges can find your film).
8. There is no requirement on what type of equipment on you can use or what programs you can and can’t use.
9. Title of the Film must be included within the first minute of the movie. Credits are optional. Example: When uploading the video and Youtube.com ask what the name of the movie is, I type FIRST 1625. But when the movie is watched the title THE TETRA OF EVIL appears in the movie.

Team Promo video requirements.

1. Teams can submit one Promo Video into the competition of the 2006 robotics season. Promo videos are judged separately than the Team films and will be given a separate, lower honor award.
2. Team that did not submit a Film may submit a Promo Video and teams that did submit a Film may submit a Promo Video. Teams that submitted both kinds of video will qualify for both awards.
3. Promo video may not be longer than 5 minutes, including credits.
4. Promo video will be uploaded into www.youtube.com. Most of the requirements for the promo video are the same for the film with the exception that the name of the promo video must be type “FIRST PROMO [Team Number].”
5. Promo videos are graded on the visual aspect of FIRST and must include footage of the 2006 season.

Judging Criteria

Judging will be done by team 1625, which means that team 1625 will not qualify for any of the awards but is welcome to submit one. (In case you don’t know, that’s the team I’m on)
Videos will be scored by the following requirements:

1. Technique: 30 points
a. How well each team executes camera movement and camera positioning.

2. Story: 10 points
a. How well the story portrays its message.

3. Flow: 10 points
a. How well the story flows and easy to follow.

4. Use of 3ds max: 5 points
a. If teams incorporate 3ds max footage into the film.

Teams must Private Message me and say that there video is posted on www.Youtube.com along with a brief description of the film. Teams must also say that their video is either a Promo or a Film.

Videos must be uploaded into Youtube.com one day after the last match at nationals. Judging will start soon after and should be done within 2-3 weeks. (Check for updates on ChiefDelphi if otherwise.) Winners will be announced on Chiefdelphi.com. Winner of the Robotics Film contest may receive a trophy if I can put one together and pay for shipping by that time.

Good luck to all teams out there and I look forward to your talents. Please post comments if you have any question regarding the rules.

Wait... can I submit a segment of my documentary? It may not have a climax... or if I submit the segment about the competitions that will probably have a climax.

I'll definitely have a promo video though.

If you want quality work, I'd give at least a week after the Championship event ends.

Most of my footage will be from Atlanta, and we aren't even coming home until Monday.. never mind countless hours of editing, compositing, animating, etc..

The link entitled "The tetra of evil" seems to re-direct to www.microsoft.com using firefox version 1.5

Anyone else having this problem?

OK fine! I originally thought that one day after the competition at nationals would be fine. but as soon as I posted the rules i thought "Maybe One day after Nationals doesn't seem reasonable. Our team last year got back two days after Nationals. Maybe I should make it a week." But then I didn't change it and it kept bugging me. Then you came along and told me that one day isn't enough and that was good enough for me.

LAST CHANGE TO THE RULES BY INFLUENCE OF ANOTHER PERSON!!!

VIDEOS SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW DUE ONE WEEK AFTER NATIONALS END. THEY MUST BE LOADED INTO YOUTUBE.COM AND A PRIVATE MESSAGE SHOULD BE SENT TO ME CLARIFYING THAT YOUR VIDEO IS THERE BEFORE ONE WEEK AFTER NATIONALS IS UP.

whew.
also a friend of mine pointed this out. In the rules it states that videos must be no more than 15 Min's long including credits. This means if you have credits (which are optional) they must be within the time frame of 15 Min's.

can a promo video from the 2005 season be submitted?

What about a promo video made this school year but for promotional purposes before the 6 weeks started?

BuddyB309 21-01-2006 13:26

promos are acceptable

Promo videos are acceptable, but they must include some footage of the 2006 robot. Either it being built, designed, or out on the playing field.

I think you can count us in - I think our video team can be creative enough to do something, but I have to discuss it with them first.
