What is YOUR favorite toy?

So were a big bunch of nerds with our nerd toys... but which one do you like best? I'm personally a big fan of my junk yard wars playset, but I also have a love for my erector sets, I guess it depends on the day of the week :)

Many a month was spent perfecting it.

Ben Mitchell 07-05-2002 06:19

Lego Mindstorms are the neatest toy ever!

Playstation 2

I'm perfectly happy with my Playstation2. I can't wait to get my hands on Madden 2003!

From the list? I have to say the computer because it's the only thing on the list I've played with. I had Lincoln logs once, but the dog ate them (poor thing got splinters from them). I suppose we had a lot of toys growing up but my folks were pretty traditional (boys got cars and toy guns, girls got barbie dolls and baby dolls, and porcelain dolls, blah!). I'm a good Aunt, I buy my niece and nephew fun toys (already got them Legos), messy toys, noisy toys (don't you just know my sister loves me for that...:D ).

Other than the computer, the toy I play with the most now is slinkys! My Other has big collection of them, and it's guaranteed when we have friends over, everyone ends up with a Slinky in their hands. Here's a picture of some of them: http://www.invisiblerobot.com/photos/miscs/slinky.jpg

Life is a toy if you learn how to play with it.

Quain 07-05-2002 11:39

yea.. slinkys are chillin till you get abend in one of the rings... then they're the root of all evil.. they never cooperate... and the best toy ever is... glue...

asher 07-05-2002 11:46

I have a slinky named nigel, he keeps me company when i had to work late nights in the news lab between robotics meetings :) then some kid came in and from what i heard tried to break him into as many pieces as possible and left them on my desk :( so nigel was buried and nadia came along, she was dismembered in the same fashion, and let me tell you if i ever find this kid he better be able to run faster than me!!!

MissInformation 07-05-2002 12:26

That is just cruel! Such ruthless persecution of slinkys has got to stop! Statistics show that 4 out of 5 slinkees have been abused and misused. Now is the time to end this senseless violence!

My best friend is an imaginary slinky.

OtakuRob 07-05-2002 13:11

Oh man, I'm probably showing my age, what as it is, but where did Transformers go on the list? Eh.

As for the slinky persecution, they'll eventually rise up and conquer us all, making us bend in strange ways and become their playthings.

::sigh:: When will all the violence end?

Suike 07-05-2002 13:21

PLAYSTATION 2 IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN ALL OF THOSE!!! SILENT HILL 2 IS FREAKY!!

David Kelly 07-05-2002 13:34

i say 80/20!! i wanna build my dresser and bed out of that stuff

Joe Matt 07-05-2002 14:22

Hey, you didn't include my favorite. It starts with a S and ends in a "way".

Ben Mitchell 07-05-2002 15:01

How could anyone prefer video games over slinkies or Legos or Erector sets?!?!?!

Those are the toys that never get outdated! :D

Scorpion515 07-05-2002 15:19

Hmmm...

For me it was defintely LEGOS (later LEGO Mindstorms) and K'nex. Now I play with my computer and "real" building materials.

:D

You all need to get out and smell the nitro

Nitromethane that is. I build and fly R/C model airplanes. Their isn't anything to compare to building an airplane and than to go out and see it fly. I currently have four planes, including one gasser. I have a Cub, a Spitfire, a sport plane and an Airtrax GS (gasser). Gasser is slang for a plane that uses a gas engine for propulsion.

Lego Mindstorms Robotics is cool - How do u think we prototyped this years' bot? lol

Altho my trusty computer has got to be my best friend...errr...Fav toy. :D

Anne George 07-05-2002 16:21

Where are the Tinker Toys and the Matchbox Cars????? And what about my all time favorite DUPLOS?????

Harrison 07-05-2002 16:24

Did you ever notice that Lego and Duplo fit together?

I always had fun combining the two and building HUGE things in my hall way...Altho once I go so hight (i think around 7 or 8 feet) it tipped over...the stuff just wasnt tight/strong enough to go higher than that...

SPAMcutie180 07-05-2002 20:14

That's what super glue is for!!! he he he

That's what they use on the professional Lego Models!!!
Well that and a steel inner frame but don't tell anyone I said that!!:-)

Downtown Disney has some awesome Lego models in front of the Lego store!!!

Scorpion515 07-05-2002 20:34

LEGO Mindstorm

Hey, how many people had/have LEGO Mindstorm?

I do!:D

Elgin Clock 07-05-2002 20:37

Oh yeah I forgot one, Lincoln Logs!!! They were awesome back in the day!!!!

While all my friends built log cabins, I built log robots!!!!
(OK I'll admit that was a stretch!)
Oh well!!

I teach a LEGO Mindstorms course to little kids over the summer, so I have 4 sets, plus tons of extra parts. Of course, when I'm not teaching the course, they're being made into awesome robotics machines in my room.

I even made a model (working, of course) of last years robot, down to the chains on the drive. Its amazingly complex: with the proper knowledge, you can mesh worm gears, make camshafts raise claws, etc, etc. That's what drew me in: the complexity.

Harrison - invest in LEGO chains, and conveyer chains. They are great to make tracks/treads, and link drive gears. Order them from a company called PITSCO. They're really nice, and send you a free catalogue. I think I may have allowed some PITSCO staffers to retire early, from all the stuff I've ordered:D (seriously)

There's only one problem with mindstorms: only 3 motor outputs! Of course you can stack em, but i want 4 indie motors:( two for drive, two for claws) and yes, I know how to use the differential, it doesnt work that well for high-load robots.

Wow, let this be a lesson to you all: never ask a Mindstorms lunatic about his(or her) habit - i mean, hobby:D

mike pawlak 07-05-2002 23:51

i have to go with lego's. i mean besides having fun with them, our team used them for prototyping.

My brother has a nitro powered car. He claims that with a $90 transmission it will reach 80mph, but I remain skeptable...

It makes preaty flames tho!!:D
He's gets mad at me for using his nitro as an accelerant.
Cup of burning nitro

You teach a course to kids? Like a FLL? I may be running at least 1 team next year. I'm doing a prep-FLL program tomorrow.

I think LEGO Mindstorms is pretty awesome. It was got me really into robotics, and it was thanks to the people on the Mindstorm forums that I found out about FLL and FIRST. Pretty cool.:D

Suike 08-05-2002 15:44

I believe him. A few people in the street racing clubs around here have those Nitro R/C Cars that are like 1/10th scale and they are very quick. They have competitions with them where they drag race and they also do circuit type stuff... I was gonna get into it but it cost too much. Paintball is my expensive hobby.

Kinda like FLL, but it's only 1 week, so we break it up into "challenges"
day 1 = go straight and don't fall apart,
day 2 =turn with timing
day 3 = turn with bumpers
etc.

FLL is awesome. Too bad there are NO teams near me though. I love teaching kids this stuff. Inside a week, I had parents come up to me and say "All she (or he) talks about is robotics." More importantly, I had kids telling their parents about speed versus torque, programming, and gear ratios. :D

It warms my heart to hear them go from "gimme that grey thing" to "pass me that half bushing, please":D

A tip: relate it to something THEY know. The lego differential is tough for them to understand, but if you ask them if they knoe what a rachet is, and work up from there, they get it much better. They need something concrete to work with before the engineering aspect "clicks" in their minds.

Also, start early, let kids get familier with the parts, hide the instruction book except for the sensors. Hide it and kept it hidden. And let the kids to all the buidling, even if they're building something doomed to fail, they will learn from that. You'll be amazed how quickly they pick up on things. Sometimes, they know it, but can't explain it. That's when you jump in with the fancy "engineer word." :p :D

Good Luck!

Anne George 09-05-2002 15:39

I actually teach FLL over the summer at FIRST Place during the FIRST Discoveries Summer Science Day Camps. It is so great to see some of the Kids that did not want to be there at the beginning because it was a science camp all excited at the end of it because they had the best time.

But of course now my favorite toy is the one that was delievered to my front door just now 3DSMax version 4.3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D :D :D :D

mikefrei 10-05-2002 01:42

Our claw designer built our complete claw out of lego's, including pneumatics. was pretty cool.
