DaimlerChrysler - Team Spirit

The 2006 FIRST Robotics Competition Manual states the following: "This award celebrates extraordinary enthusiam and spirit through exceptional partnership and teamwork".

How is this award judged at a competition?
Can anyone offer any tips?

Comments are welcome from previous winners.

They, not only judge you on how much spirit your team has in the stands, but they look i think for the "spirit" of your team and the things they do within and without of your teams community!!!

I know that for us at VCU last year. The award takes into account not just how much your team has spirit in the stands during matches, but also how the unity of your team drives the team to do what it does, and how it gets the community involved in the process. The thing you have to also think about is that Team Spirit, is not just about how much your team can cheer on your team during its matches, but how it also cheers for the alliance, and other teams at the competition as well. I hope this helps you out.

Team spirit can be anything from how much you cheer in the stands to your team's robot (that why we named it X-WhAAAt!!! Steve W was hip to it and would shout "X-WhAAAt!!! every time our robot came up. I kids would shout back "YEH-AH!" Steve would shout "X-WhAAAt!!!" again and our kids would shout back "OK!" FIRST likes when you put a sincere effort into your team spirit like that.

That seems like a logical look at it, it's not just about your spirit in the stands, but everywhere, i agree.

The best way to think of it: Do everything: LOUDER WITH FEELING!
You'll be OK then. ;)

Sounds like sound advice, we'll be sure to use it in the next competion, thanks, we needed the help, or else we might have been a lost cause like last time, only concentrating on the one aspect.

One of the best things you can do as a team is do what suits you best, not what suits other teams. Don't make a strength a weakness because you want to excel at something else you don't really do unless you have the resources available to make those kind of sacrifices (manpower, tools, enthusiasm, etc.) otherwise you could risk spreading yourself too thin.

I don't mean to sound like anything like that, just that last time I was at a competition, all we did was cheer for out team, alliance, and our favorite alliance in the finals. That we needed to branch out some more, do some more than just cheer, and be loud. We need to actually put something behind it too. But I see what your saying, and you are right. You're just full of good advise. Thanks again for the help.

If you cheer for ALL teams, not just yours, you will get either a Team Spirit or Sportsmanship award, guaranteed.

Oh, and the judges around here seem to like it when a team starts the "We got spirit, yes we do, we got spirit, HOW BOUT YOU?" chant.

Despite the poor grammar therein.

My team got in a three way bout with that once, it was kind of fun actually. Never found out who won it though, had to go take care of something. But I'm not so sure that it's garenteed to get one for cheering for all the teams though, but oh well, should still be fun. :)

well my team (ramtech) has won it various times in the past. basicly they tell us to cheer for everyone, even if you are out on the beggining. just cheer for your allience, your competition, the dj, the chairs, to the point were it seems ironic. ;) just give it your full effort in being the best competitor posible, be gracefull in defeat and support everyone. allways scream, try to show cordination from time to time.

I remember seeing Ramtech dancing from beginning to the end of the competition (must be a great cardio workout). You guys had to be exuasted by the end of the championship.

Well said, all very good advice ^^

We went all out to win the spirit award in Toronto last year... one of the mentors made special '1511' service announcements... we made banners/flags... had a special song that the DJ played... we were sitting right behind him... and he said he would anywho... so that was real big luck on our part... and we screamed our hearts out. When our teams weren't up, we would *when not looking down at the scouting stuff* cheer for other teams that supported us... and we had a mascot... sorda...

It just takes major team spirit is all, no matter what's happening on or off the field.

Team spirit could also be judged based on materials brought to the stands, including t-shirts. Our leadership works closely with the t-shirt committee to ensure that the shirts can be worn proudly by all of our team members.
