IR Distance sensor
 

Hey, I have been searchin for a IR sensor that i can use to tell the distacne from the camera to the glowing green box. We thought it would bve the simple-ist way to find the distance. could anybody point us in the right direction to find a circuit design that would do what i need it to do, and i could program with it. I did not find it in the fourms.

The Sharp IR sensors have a range up to 59". Not enough. Sonar has the range but the cone of detection is very large at this distance and the economical sonar sensors only return the distance to the first ping. What would work is a Laser time of flight instrument. Can't use them because of the amount of radiation they use. So as far as I know there is no perfect targeting system other than the camera to use this year.

Most IR sensors have a very limited range (less than 3m) - the price of the sensor will quickly exceed $200 if you are looking for long-range IR.

You have feedback from the vertical axis of the camera. It is a simple trig formula to determine your distance from the goal. You don't need an additional sensor. Our controls team is using this method.
