What is special about your HS, or School that you go to

What is the best part of the High School you go to, or graduates, what is your favorite memory from High School

(Besides Robotics or FIRST related)

Mine is that our school doesnt have Pep Rallies :D

Harrison 08-05-2002 23:30

I think the best thing about our school is the amount of extra stuff we have...Besides FIRST...

We have 2 football teams, 2 rugby teams, 3 soccer teams, a tennis team, a curling team, 2 hockey teams, a badmitton team, 2 baseball teams...u get the idea...

Also, the amount of stuff that the student body does around the school to help out is great...Like its us that keeps all the computers going for example...

Also, at x-mas time we also do some fund-rasing for a local charity that needs help (we take the majorly under-funded ones) and we have two weeks of "Christmas Cheer"...we have dances, activities, movies, all sorts of things to raise money. Last year in these 2 weeks we raised over $20,000 for a charity (their annual budjet was about $10,000 - so u can guess how much we helped).

my school split into two schools, so now i will be a part of the first graduating class of the new school.

Mike Schroeder 09-05-2002 00:00

our school (North Brunswick High site of Brunswick Eruption 2002 )-cheap competion plug- became a BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE  in 2000 because of our robotics team (our football team might have helped a little they won their 1st game in 5 seasons and everyone cheered and stuff  ). we won the nationals and most people i know say we are cocky and stuff cause the school threw us a pep rally the day the blue ribbon person was their.:D

MissInformation 09-05-2002 00:44

The high school I went to has the honor of being the last all girl public school in the U.S. We had no football team, our school mascot was the dove, our class mascot was Mickey Mouse, intead of caps and gowns for graduation, we all wore floor length white gowns and carried roses. It was set up to be like a college prep school, and to be accepted into the accelerated course you had to carry an 85 average from middle school (business and honors courses 80 average). And when you graduated, you got your state diploma, and if you filled all the class requirements for the school (the correct amount of honors classes, etc.) you also got a diploma from the school. It was an hour bus ride to get there, but it beat the nasty zone school I would have had to go to. Go Western!

Best memory? Too many... but there was a funny smoke bomb incident on the bus...

my school has absolutely no school spirit. they even wrote a whole article about in the school news paper that no one reads. no one attends our athletic games. here's a quote from that article about our football games "the stands tend to have more marching band members and their parents than spectators" i only read this because i was bored in english class. i hear that our track, crew and girls' softball teams are pretty good, not to mention our robotics team... last year a girl on the softball team won a full scholarship to harvard and was named like gatorade player of the year or something. so, in conclusion, we have no school spirit in bay shore.

Ben Mitchell 09-05-2002 23:21

Ok, here's the story...

My school is in New Jersey. It gets cold in the winter in New Jersey. It snows in the winter in New Jersey.

Our High School is based after a school in Southern California: that is, each subject is in a different building, with a nice long walk in between them.

It was built AT CAPACITY, they're expanding it now, you can see the dollar signs light up in the eyes of the administration.

Our student council is a puppet government, but that may not be unique. School newspapers and announcements are loaded with propaganda: its like something from Orwell's 1984 or something...

Construction workers on 3 occasions snagged the gas line outside the biology building...when I was in it!

We heard the principals voice..kinda shaky over the intercom to "relocate to the auditorium"

Of course, we high-tailed it out of there ASAP:eek:

And that's about it for us. We're generally typical suburbia.:D

The Orientals

Mine isn't really something to be proud of. A couple of years ago USA Today made a list of high schools with ethinic mascots and my alma matter East High was the only one in America with the name Orientals. The funny thing is their mascot is an eagle. They're going around the Rochester area and making teams with native american mascots like Penfield or Irondiquiot change their names to something less offensive, but no one has ever told East they have to change their name.
The High School the X-Cats are tied to,Wilson Magnet, used to be known, back in the day, as West High and was East's chief rival. They were called the Occidentals(whatever that is). Now they're known as the Wildcats(X-Occidentals would've been too weird for words). My wife who is a teacher at Wilson likes to tease me and point out that I'm no longer an Oriental, I'm a Wildcat. Now I can say she's wrong; I'm an X-Cat!:p

my schools kinda cool because as of next year we will have 3 high schools on the same campus (within a couple of hundred feet of each other) we have classes in both schools right now and it makes for a lot of diversity. we also have all the sports teams at each school (3 football, couple swimming, track, hockey, ect. teams per school) then we only have one first team :) we actually have like 120 kids show up for the first meetings but then we loose 75% of em and have a team of 30. still pretty cool though.

Anne George 10-05-2002 17:04

My school isnt much to talk about because it sucks but we do Have a Principal who A) cant recite the Pledge of Aliegence and B) has to repeat her name like three times when she does announcements over the intercom. of course there is our Football team that stinks so the people who show up to our games are there to watch the band so most of them leave after halftime. then of course there is always the fact that the school is not big enough to fit all the students :)

What's special about my school?

It's falling apart
The windows are plastic
The bathrooms have no soap
The bathroom stalls have no doors
The fire-estingusers are marked "99" and are rusted to the walls.
Half the lights don't work
No air condisioning
The heat works during the summer - only
The Sinks in the bathrooms don't work
The lockers don't close
The computers are gutted

Central HS of PHiladelphia

Our school is the second oldest school in the country, we are one of the best schools in the country, we are a fully academic school and you need a 90 or above in Middle school to get in. We also have electron microscopes, i think thats pretty cool. Our sports teams are the best in the city and we are very diverse. The only downsize is that the school exclusivly uses Crapintosh Computers, they are not compatible with any of the software from FIRST.

Also, to the all girls school, up the block from us is Philadelphia High School for Girls, another all girls school.

We were basketball 5A statechamps this year for Georgia.

We have 2 facilities named after people who still work there. McDonald Baseball field. Doug Liscomb Gym.

Our magnet program is one of the best in the country and is ranked 3rd for SAT prep behind the amazing Thomas Jefferson school and some other one.

Re: What is special about your HS, or School that you go to

Umm...we killed a goat. Or so the legend goes. This story tells the beginning of our rivalry with Rockville High School, one of the schools involved with RAGE (no hard feelings, right?). Allegedly, before a big game, a group of our football players (read: people not quite up to the FIRST-level of intelligence) decided to steal Rockville's then mascot, which was a live goat (their mascot is the Ram.) Then, they decided to paint it out school colors, maroon and gold. Unfortunately, they painted the goat with toxic paint, and RHS's new mascot was the dead goat :ahh: . Ever since, we have been rivals.

I sincerely doubt this is true, but it's all that's coming to me at the moment.

Re: What is special about your HS, or School that you go to

Highest Ranking by State of Ohio - "Excellent"
Also Ranked a United States "Blue Ribbon School"

Our school is a preengineering high school. Our classes include things like electronics(single/three phase AC + DC), CAD, CAM, machining(works well when you need to build a first robot :) ), metal fabrication, fluid power, PLC programming and ladder logic, and I believe they are currently working on expanding our plastics facilities so we can learn more about that(most likely to be finished after I graduate :( ). We are a small school with around 120 people which allows us a lot of activities that other schools can't have. Many of our classes have integrated activities, like writing reports in English about OSHA standards or creating parts for math for Statistical Process Control.

The curriculum culminates in your senior year with your senior project. Senior projects this year included as automated safety glasses mold/injector and an automated walking quadruped(can't wait to see this thing work) along with several projects that were actually assigned by several sponsoring companies and will actually be used there when they are finished. Needless to say FIRST is a competition that is right up our alley :D .

Well this fact is more to say about the town that the school is in, which the school is named after.

Along time ago the founder of the town was named ARAD. When they made the decision to name the town after ARAD. Well...... someone may a mistake and name the town as ARAB (what a mistake)

This means if you do talk like a southern, you mite think we live in the middle east. But we live in good old Heart of Dixie ! ! :D

To say ARAB make a B sounds and the end like "bu" ARA"bu"

How did I miss this thread?

Alright, alright...something special about Irmo High School.

(a slew of possibilities come through his mind, not unlike Dave Lavery when Heidi's the caption contest subject)

Well, we were in the news around 1997-98 (or so) because the Indigo Girls were going to stage a concert in our gym, followed by an interview with The Stinger (the student newspaper). I'm fuzzy on the details, but apparently some parents got steamed (the Indigo Girls are lesbian), complained to the principal, and he cancelled the show. (They later performed a free show for high schoolers off-campus.)

Also, we have a freaking awesome AFJROTC unit. They've won the Sword of Excellence (think Chairman's, but for AFJROTC units in South Carolina) a few times. And their deputy group commander last spring wasn't too bad, either. ;)

(True story: Last night, I went on a random Wal-Mart run with a friend of a friend. We were there, headed toward the checkout, and I bumped into the instructor, who I recently listed as a reference on a job application. He had some time doing it, though--he couldn't remember if "irresponsible" was spelled with one R or two. Then again, he says that to all the cadets--to the point that "irresponsible" is bookmarked in the dictionary in the room. I got the job, too.)

My school's interesting. We are really big for our sports teams, and a lot of our academic clubs. Mainly because our school is one of the best Magnet schools in the state.

Nothing too special about our school, but I don't really know about it if there is anything because FIRST is always popping into my head at school...instead of question marks swirling my mind I got triangles, circles and squares...

my school is an all girls school from the best country in the world...we get divided into 4 houses and have inter-house competitions every month to compete for the house cup at the end of the year (it's like harry potter and i remember once after a volleyball game a girl asked me if we had wands because our school is actually a castle and its so much like harry potter :S:S) also we have a tunnel under our school that goes to Lake Ontario but i've never actually seen it...oh and supposedly the schools haunted but i've never seen any ghosts...it just creeps me out alot!

Our new highschool will split everyone up between the buildings... and our mascot is the panther but that doesn't seem to special... we've got freakish loads of team spirt and our rivals are the Holland Dutch... We're one of the many Holland Schools in Holland... there's Holland Christian, Holland Alternative, Holland, West Ottawa, Black River, and Corpus Christie...

My school is cool because of our riots. No, I'm just joking (though, on the record, this last one was not a riot...)

MSU is cool because our mascot, Sparty, is the reigning national "Best Mascot" two years running now. He went down to the competition in Florida and just kicked. Go Sparty!!!

Re: What is special about your HS, or School that you go to

We do all our classes at once for the entire year (yes .. all year i am taking 3 different maths, 2 sciences, and 1 english) ...

In grades 7 and 8, you combine all the course material from grades 7,8, and 9 (because grade 8 is typically a review year in Ontario). When you should be in grade 9, you do all grade 10 courses. When you should be in grade 10, you do all grade 11 courses. When you should be in grade 11, you do a mix of grade 11 and 12 courses. When you should be in grade 12, you do all grade 12 courses. The good thing with this program is it gives you the opportunity to do more grade 12 courses (which is what is based on for university .. Top 6 grade 12 marks made up of the prerequisites required for the program and the remaining highest marks) and in your final year, you can take less classes giving you more spares (scheduled periods without class ... so you can do what you want).

We have an experiential learning program where certain time slots are set aside in the years you should be in grade 9, 10, and 11. In this time you get to do crazy stuff like go to Japan, make gingerbread houses, learn yoga, get your CPR certificate, etc. And in the year you should be in grade 11, you finish classes in April and write your exams then, so you can go on a 2 month co-op experience, either at home or abroad.

The Bronze Duke of Edinburg Award has been built into the curriculum. So by the time you graduate, you are guaranteed to have it, if not your silver and gold. (www.theaward.com for more information)

oh .. and we are all girls ... ;)

Hrmf. Until last January, we were the only public high school in CT to have 9th grade at a jr. high. And two years ago it took 15 attempts [referendums](a record in the state, close to one nationaly) to pass our budget. But that was after a few school board people stole about 3 million dolllars from the school.

RUHS is the second largest campus west of the Mississippi. It is over a mile long. We have 10 minute passing periods because of it.

Also, it is our 100th year

Past alumnuses: Charles Lindbergh (for about 5 months), Demi Moore, The Smothers Brothers, among others.

Not to mention our school is falling apart. Our science building is from the 20s, our "alumni walk" has sinkholes from all of the rain, and we have had to fire 3 different construction contractors because they fell behind.

Oh yeah, our school sounds like your's Ben (although I think that you don't post here anymore).

:D Our school is all girls and some of the students currently attending are awesome! Like one of my friends tried out for a role in Spanglish and one of our freshman is a really popular model, Dana Marcollini, she's trying out for Calvin Klein.

In all, our school has really improved our charisma and our confidence as girls! So we can rock on at robotic competitions! :D lol

Our high school gets the award for being the most liberal HS. (if you find a more liberal one, let me know) In any given classroom there are literally only a couple of conservative people. But then again, Ithaca is a very liberal city in a surrounded by very conservative towns on all sides.

"Ithaca is 10 sq. miles surrounded by reality" -so true

Re: What is special about your HS, or School that you go to

We are the oldest school in our county. We have a cricket team. We have just about the worst Lacrosse team in the state of GA but it is the best in our schools history. We went from having our best baseball team ever last year to having our worse only because it is all sophmores.

We had the best RB in the state and still only went 2-8 in football this year. We got 6 of our wins revoked 3 years ago for having a 21 year old on our team who only warmed the bench.

Every year we initiate our frosh by soaking them with water guns during our 1st peprally and we had our last years robots with a water compressor last year and it had an arm that leaned forward an could get to like 12 ft high and we got it to be able to soak some of the freshmen down.

Our ROTC is the 2nd best in the state. Our drumline is the 2nd in the state also.

And our principal goes out in his car to find people to make sure that all the jr's take their graduatin tests.

I think one of the great things about Perry Meridian High School is that there are so many extracurricular clubs and sports teams. If you can't find an activity to join, then you're not looking. Our wrestling team is a perenial powerhouse and we also do pretty well in our other sports. I also love how many scheduling options we have with tons of different classes such as Project Lead the Way. In fact, I wish we could have another period added on to the school day so I could take classes like programming.

The Plymouth- Canton Educational Park (P-CEP), a 305 acre campus site in western Wayne County, is the home of three large comprehensive high schools- Canton, Salem, and Plymouth High Schools. Completed in 2002, the buildings house approximately 280 teachers, counselors, administrators, human services and learning specialists and a student population of around 5,500 grades nine through twelve. The curriculum is extensive with 183 units of credit taught during the school year. Courses in the basic core are supplemented by a variety of enrichment opportunities including 13 Advanced Placement offerings.

--Quote from P-CEP Program of Studies

Some other features of the Park include two football stadiums (Varsity and JV), an operational radio station, TV studio, 3 full gyms, 2 pools, complete auto shop, 3 school stores, 2 theaters, cafe for teachers, security force, police on site 24/7.

All the schools have their own sports teams, all the clubs(40+) and the Robotics team are combined.

As for spirit Canton and Salem have been rivals for more than 30 years so the Canton/Salem games are big events and the varsity football game is huge.
Through all of this our robotics team has grown to almost 100 students and is gaining some recognition. This is the first year varsity letters could be earned for robotics.

My high school is nuts for the class of 05'. NMB senior high (my school!)

-like 3 seniors going out of state for college
-The prom: no prom king (lol) and like 2 prom queen selections
-athletics is pretty decent, but they care more for football and baseball
-The student population is like majority black and hispanic folks. asian population is 5% (wow)
-barely anyone cares about robotics in my school. (all of them think it's battlebots)
-a common stereotype within my school about the magnet program. "people in the magnet are nerds" so not true
-barely any school spirit for the seniors (odd)
-the tv studio for tv production class got vandalized before my christmas break.
-too much thug like people around the school, heck security guards don't even care.

Yea my school can get crazy most of the time.

My school is extremely non-traditional.
-It's a technology school (1:1 Student to PC ratio)
-We get our own school email and all of our assignments are on Lotus Notes databases.
-Everything is project-based.
-About 100 students per grade
-6 more graduation requirements in addition to California standards
-We have no music or sports programs, but we're allowed to do them at other schools in town.
-There are several Tech High replicas throughout the nation
-Important people come for student-led tours of the school
-We've been nominated to be one of the top 25 schools in the Nation. :)

Edit: It's New Technology High School in Napa, CA, by the way.

Re: What is special about your HS, or School that you go to

ok my school, probably is in the weirdest and best 5% of all high schools, we do a LOT of weird stuff:

-you are constantly reminded of the high SAT expectations, average on the old SATs was some crazy number like 1270, and its going up
-because we are a "blue ribbon school of excellence" your science classes are never in the same order as anyone else's, Freshman take Physics, Sophs take Chem, and Juniors take Bio
-most students are upset with a 98% on an exam
-tables spin the bottle at lunch to see who throws out the trash <-- LOTS OF FUN
-Our history teacher wrote our textbooks
-the "whole" school has a xanga and an ipod, fine only 90%
-We are number 1 in the world in AP Art History
-90% of students take an AP class
-asians have crushed the european's hopes of every becoming valedictorian
-a certain administrator loves to hear the sound of his own voice and the intercom is his favorite toy
-while walking out to your history trailer sawdust often blows on your head...no it's not snow
-the average senior car is a BMW or a Lexus
-Dungeons and Dragons has a cult following, same with Stairway to Heaven
-At school dances everyone sings Bohemian Rapesody
-half of the graduating class will go to Rutgers
-You know at least 15 people going to an Ivy League College when they graduate
-fights erupt between grades during Spirit Week, between the boy powder puff cheerleading squads

There is a ton more, but thats just how weird we are.

Yeah with time, all that will change. They had that problem at our school 3 years ago but now everything is cool.
- Shareef Abdu-Rahim (Portland Trail Blazers), Josh Wolf (US olympic soccer team or something like that), Jamario Davidson (University Alabama point gaurd) went to our school
- We are the 3rd or 5th ranked program in the country for SAT with the last 2 str students for Georgia coming out of our school
