OMG! such a base! where do you guys come up with such original ideas. I wish my team had the resources to build something as cool as that. :p

edit: total joke guys..i did not mean for this to be taken in any bad way...it was just some laughable fun.

Nice rendering.

It looks like you are driving across the long axis ("sideways"). Why did you choose to do this? Are you shooting perpindicular to the drive axis?

I'm speculating, that you're being sarcastic -- and if that is the case, I think you're being REALLY harsh for no real reason.

The elegance from this design, doesn't come from the tough to build components, or from being some new innovative system; but from the integration of simple components into a highly functional system. This is something we can ALL learn from.

This looks like a wide-body design, using high traction wheels, and the KOP chassis/transmission. It will likely have decent pushing power, be able to climb the ramp, and turn very well; all while moving at a decent speed.

They have used COTS, and on-hand components to do this, and do it in a simple, robust, elegant little package.

Personally, I AM impressed with this, and I would hope that other teams will see the elegant, simplicity that can be used to achieve such functionality.

Kudos to 1660 for a great drivebase!

We briefly considered a "landscape" type base (wheelbase running the short way) but dismissed it as probably being too tippy. Which is kind of ironic, as we haven't yet proven that our Cg will allow us to go up the ramp without tipping - it works in mockup, but we still have to get the actual components installed and test it.

I think it'll be a good solid drivetrain--those IFI wheels are crazy awesome.

I'm also curious about 6WD the wide way when it comes to stability--can a Person Who Knows What They Are Doing shed some light on that?

I agree, we have switched to using all the COTS we can. But admit some bias here John. They're clearly helping out with your paycheck when everything in the picture came from IFI. :D

In my defense, I only designed 90% of the COTS parts shown there.
The transmission was mostly Copioli.

Still, the integration is not lost on me.

a lot of teams dismiss the kitbot base as being some sort of "Newbie" base. Not true. it is remarkably robust and very versitile, especially with the new Super-Vex system. I say, if the kitbot base works for you, why spend extra time and money desiging your own?

I think the base looks great.

As for the kit-bot. When all is said, we probably will have used every part FIRST gave us. Whether or not it was the intended purpose for the part is up for debate.

well to clear up some of what you guys said. we are not shooting and some of the part of the chassis are coming off. Me being the driver and all i like how it drives and turns. it does go up the ramp with like an inch of ground clearence and when the inventor team is dont with all of the other stuff the pics will be here

still more to come

Okay...okay, maybe a joke and all but when I read this I cant help but get a little upset. Myself, a college student who's juggling an engineering course load, fraternity life and mentoring a under-supported robotics team with very few resources, sees this as the perfect drive-base. So what if it's all COTS, so what if its something your team could have thrown together in 10 minutes; bottom line is a student posted a picture of something hes proud of, something his team accomplished and no one has the right to make any mockery of it whatsoever. Please excuse me if I'm coming off a little harsh but it really comes down to this, think before you post, if its not helpful or may hurt someone don't post it.
