Is that only because you got kicked out of your HS on Saturday for the Cogan Computer fair? :p ;)

Will there be a webcast of this scrimmage?

http://www.shsrobotics.org/06/webcast/index.htm

Here is the weblink. We should have a link from the home page- shsrobotics.org

Please give us feedback as we are hosting the Webcast for the United Technologies New England Regional during week 2. If we can improve- we will!

Special Thanks to 176 for setting this up each year. for those not from the area- this is also a dryrun for FIRST as we are testing an actual FIRST field and the electronics and tonight we actually read the instuctions!!! Making sure the steps all made sence and there was nothing missing. Yes this is a Scrimmage for all aspects of the event and should benefit everyone in FIRST.

If you are there, make sure you send a thanks to 176 members and all the FIRST personel in attendance.

For those of you trying to finish your robots and in our case working hard to drop a few pounds- I hope you enjoy the webcast!

I have yet to go to sleep! A few of our team members stayed up all night in order to get it running for today! Yes, we had to do a few things that need to be changed before ship, but it DOES work! It just looks iffy...

I must say 195 really wasn't that ghetto a bot... They just all though it was.

Also, does anyone by any random chance(aka I am looking toward 230 a lot on this one) have any of the footage saved to anything that we might be able to get some bits and pieces? Especially the opening ceremonies.

I recorded a portion of the webcast (the drive team meeting), and I also filmed a few matches myself in the afternoon while I was there. (Yes, I have a lot of footage of RAGE :)) Depending on how much time I have tomorrow, I'll see how much of it I can get off my camera and online for everyone to view.

Hopefully I can get a bunch of the pictures I took up soon[er]. :p

Since Winter War Zone was probably the Largest 2006 competition to date, did you guys notice anything intresting about this year's game? Strategies that were most effective, generally what worked/didn't work, fun factor on a scale of 0-1 (yes it's binary, and its either Fun, or Not Fun), ect.

Here are a few things I noticed that I noticed at the UTC Scrimmage: ;)

Tipping Over:
The one thing which struck me as surprising was the number of robots that tipped over. At least every match it seemed as if some robot had either tipped backwards while trying to score in the side goals or while trying to get on the ramp.

Getting on the ramp:
Getting on the ramp is not a very easy task. For a lot of teams, once they are on the ramp, they cannot get off or they will tip over. Many of the teams with six wheel drive and/or shooters high up had a very difficult time attempting to get onto the ramp.

Ball Hoppers and Storage:
Also, even though it was just a scrimmage, many of the teams could not store that many balls inside their robot. About half of the teams there could not store more than 10 or so balls in their robots.

Balls are everywhere:
To the teams who can only load from human players, good luck. After the second period of the game, about 2/3 of all the balls on the field were loose on the ground. Many of these came from failed scoring attempts and from human players missing the side goals. However, if your team has an effective ball gatherer from the floor, you will be able to amass large numbers of balls relatively easily.

N.E.R.D.s are everywhere!
Grady wasn't kidding when he said the N.E.R.D. population was about to skyrocket! There are more N.E.R.D.s now than you can can shake a stick at! :p

First off, thanks to Team 176 for putting this scrimmage on and to Team 230 for webcasting it. It was great for those teams who did not have a scrimmage in their area to see some great teams compete in this year's game.

I have a question about scoring. Was scoring truly "real-time?" Was the score displayed somewhere for alliance members to see easily? Was the scoring via the cameras and auto counters as is in the competition manual, or were "human counters" necessary?

Also, now that folks have seen this game played, what do you think?

Thanks.

Re: Winter War Zone/UTC Scrimmage February 18

From my un-technical perspective - it was hard for me to figure out who was winning, scoring-wise (but then, it usually takes me a while to figure out the game so my comments may not be valid). Spectators were confused. The periods are very short and I think it took teams a while to catch on - beware of being offsides. It seemed like a lot of balls were being shot overtop of the goals. A lot of tipping since the center of gravity is high on a lot of these robots, like was mentioned before, and without having an arm for leverage once the robots were overturned they couldn't right themselves. Not much accomplished in the autonomous mode, but that could change as robots are perfected in the coming days. Lots of stray balls going outside the playing field, including a whole bunch of them being shot at us in the bleachers at one point, mid-day (Stu from Buzz has it on video and it would be great to post on CD). Thankfully they were poofballs and no one was injured.

This was a great day, as always, allowing us the opportunity to see the game played out, to work on our robots with other teams' assistance, to get NEMs together to talk about our concerns, and to meet new friends and greet old ones! Thanks to 176, 230, Andy and all the folks from FIRST, etc. who put on another great scrimmage!

I am really surprised at this. The PNW (with a couple of notable exceptions) is not known as a FIRST powerhouse, but EVERY robot in Bellevue yesterday went up and down the ramp without a problem (OK, I lied, one of the rookies could do it, but it had to line up carefully). Top Gun and the TRC-clone chassis could generally go up forward or backwards, even at an angle. All were 6WD. I wonder what the difference is? The rest of your observations match mine.

OK, here goes.
There was not a real time display of the score. I don't know if it was because there isn't going to be one,or FIRST was focusing on getting the field working.
I'd say that they were making sure the field was fully working, which it was. To my knowledge there was only one interruption during game play. For some reason the field didn't choose who won autonomous mode, and it froze up. Other than that, the field seemed to do well.
We did start to rely on the HPs counting the number of balls they threw.

Autonomous.
Car Nack seemed to be right. That percentage will be even higher during elimination rounds, near 90%.

Defense.
Is very easy. Unless a robot plants itself down, which most don't, they will be defendable. You thought 2002 was a game for strong drive trains? You haven't seen nothin'.
Most teams mounted their shooters fairly low, which makes it easy to block shots.

Center goal.
If a robot can score 4 or 5 balls in the center goal while some one is playing defense on them, pick them. If that same team can score in either the center goal, or the corner goals with their load of balls, pick them.

Ramp.
While most teams have the ability to climb the ramp, if you play any sort of defense on them, they'll either tip over or not get on the ramp at all. And I don't mean tip over in a bad way, just that robots tip over easily when on the incline. Most robots that I saw tip weren't tipped on purpose. Overall the matches were played pretty clean. Rough, but clean.

Congratulations FIRST for making an awesome game. I'm looking forward to regional competition.
