Half the team are rookies here. We have the disadvantage that our school is only 2 grades; Upper Sixth and Lower Sixth. Thus we lose half the team each year as they head off to University.

I think this year we have about 6 or so rookies. This is a pretty good number because about 6 of us graduated last year. It's enough to keep the program going and insure its future, yet not too many that the meetings feel crowded or overwhelming. Overall, I am very happy with the work done by both the veteran and rookie members of the team.

A rookies 1st 6 week build session is mostly about learning, through observation and actually doing things with proper supervision. The rookies really play a very important role on our team, and are treated just like any veturan member really. Depending on what their intrests are, a rookie can be seen helping with designing, building, animation, spirit..you name it.

I'd say almost half of the team this year is a rookie (and most of them wanted to join last year). All rookies participate in helping building the robot because we do basic training before the 6 weeks.

#857 has 11 rookies and 3 returning members. As far as high schooler membership goes, it exploded this year - it's great!

Since the majority of the team are rookies, they do th emajority of the building. It's been a tough season because most of the students are so young, they have a lot to learn! But they're doing well and everything is coming along. :)

On both 830 and 573, about half of our students (out of 15 and 30, respectively) are rookies.

We have alot this year. More than last year, and alot of them actually know what to do and how to do stuff. Like our programmer is a freshman and hes awesome. Also theres a few noobs that know how to cut materials and use alot of the machines.

being a rookie team, all of us :).

unfortunately being a 2 grade school we have 20ish seniors and only about 4 juniors on the team. meaning a large majority of the team graduates next year.

half of our team are rookies and mostly they just do stuff like help build stuff or take pics. which is good for the returnees to concentrate on some of the delicate stuff.

We had 15 student newbies and 3 adult newbies. Now it's 11 student newbies and 2 adult newbies.
2 newbies are on my animation team.
1 newbie is are only promotions team member.
2 of our student and one of our adult newbies are on drives (and one is the backup human player)
1 of our student newbies is on Mechanisms
5 of our student and the other new adult mentor is on electrical ( AKA Sparkies) and one of the students is also the human player.
New blood is good for the team.

About 7 new members in a team of about 19 students. Total. Six of the 7 new members are girls. Two are freshmen. The new members are doing everything except website and machining.

Well... Team 1712 is all rookies, as we are a rookie team. However, our main robot designer has built robots for battlebots and our programming guys have taken programming courses throughout most of high school. There are very few people on our team that didn't know what was going on before joining, as most have taken at least one or two engineering/programming/CADD courses that our school offers.

It's being able to apply all that knowledge to one large, finished product that's tricky...

We too are a two year school (Tech Center) in Michigan. We have only one returning student from last year. The rest of our team is new. They have everything as their roles. Our team is small also, just 12 or so students. They do the machining, electrical, cabling, programming, design, drawings, etc. They do it all. We have 1 CAD student, 4 machine tool students, 4 electronics/networking students, 3 programming students. We have 4 teachers, 3 returning graduate mentors and 1 engineer to guide and make sure no one gets hurt. It is a nice team. More returning students would have been nice but they all graduated but the one. :eek:

We have about 15 out of 20 rookies this year. Most of them are just floating around and try to look busy. This one rookie really gets on my nerves being arrogant to everyone.

However, lucky this year we got some really good "rookies", they're pretty experienced this kind of stuff from their hobbies and stuff.

There are 5 of us that are still on the team from last year, all the rest graduated. the other 25-30 are rookies *sigh* Its a pain...........

A little over half our team this year are rookies. We try to get them involved as much as possible and teach them as much as possible about engineering and how FIRST works. Almost all of them have stepped up to the callenge and are participating well, even taking leadership roles. :D

exactly 1/5... and since the majority of the people on the robotics team stay 5 years it is a perfect ratio to keep the team size the same... although we wouldn't mind expanding the number of people on the team, but we may find problems with finding what to give people to do

We have 15 rookies and a rookie mentor and a rookie sponsor and a rookie everything...we are a rookie team :-)

rookie, well i guess thats what i am. i've never been on a robotics team before but i have been in technology camp and we built robots and made websites. the robots were made of legos so thats not really complecated. we also had manuals to help with where the wires went and how to program it...so, yeah, i'm a rookie. :D

We have 11, (over half the team) and they do everything from building to math calculations. We're really proud of all of them!

Our team even though it has been a long time since it has been a rookie team acts like a rookie team...

We have a rookie advisor, our main mentor is not actually main because he has some important thing going on in his job this year, and haven't been showing up as often as last year.... no seniors this year beacuse all the seniors have left... we also have two new mentors, our work area has been cut down in half... sigh.. it is a real mess this year XD

and our team is mostly made up of rookies, except for me and a couple few. I'm still a newbie because this is my second year.. T_T help me!!!!

we at 191 have about 10 newbies this year 6-7 are working in the electronics area ( one of those is me :D )and the rest are split between mechs and drives

Lets see, we have about 10-11 rookies this year. Most are freshmen, which is fantastic, because we have 4 seniors who are running the project this year, and only a few sophomores and one junior. The freshmen are a very sharp bunch, the ones who I have trained on Inventor are very intelligent and pleasant people. The programming rookies seem to be catching on very quickly to what they have to do. Our webmaster, who is a freshmen and rookie, learned how to do web design at home and designed and created a website from scratch to put in to our domain name placeholder. Click on the link below to view his work. Overall, I have a feeling that the seniors are leaving the team to very competent rookies.

We have about 13 people on the team, 9 of which are rookies.

We have a lot of rookies this year, and about 4-5 freshman. The freshmen on our team this year have completely blown us all away, and take on all of the most important jobs, and do it quite well. There's rookies working on just about every single aspect of the bot.

About half of our about 9 consistent members are rookies. Considering....we have built the robot just debugging , the freshmen are bound to stay (that's good they are the future of the team), everyone knows most of the basics now, scouting sheet is complete, and buttons are being made... I'd say the rookies (and veterans) did a terrific job.

On our team rookies, first year members despite actual grade, are expected to teach a skill as they learn it. And they certainly stepped up to the plate teaching me skills I didn't know (ex. basic pneumatics connections.)

They do all the jobs that any veteran would do as soon as they are able. woot!

I think more than half of our team are rookies, yeah that sounds about right. We have 7 seniors, umm idk how many juniors, but we have pleanty of sophmores, and no freshman(since at our school they're required to take Beginning Electronics, Advance Electronics, and Robotics before joining FIRST). At our school FIRST is a class/team/club.

We are ALL rookies! Our Robotics team has won some local competitions (ISRAEL), and even placed 3rd in an international event last year, but we have never competed in anything like FIRST.

The cool thing is that we started out with maybe 20 kids and 3 mentors, and now we are up to 50 kids and maybe 10 mentors helping out. EVERYBODY wants to get involved, and our whole school is riveted on what is happening with the FIRST competition, which is SO so great.

I'm mentoring our web crew as well as our animation crew, and I can saftely say that we are VERY glad to be competing (only) at the rookie level! :).

We have about 14 rookies, and 12 students that already joined FIRST.
At the season they use to learn, but, they quickly are able to be what we call slaves, thay clean up the room, buy food, get something here, there...lol
We work with this number because a lot of then give up during the year=(

We are an all rookie team, and according to one of our mentors, we're doing better than his old team. This leads me to wonder why people dislike rookies. Our entire team is rookie, and we're doing great.

All of our team members are rookies except 3 seniors.

Last year the team was composed of nearly all seniors, and they were really worried about the team continuing. Ya know what they did? They invited a whole bunch of freshmen high schoolers to go with them to a competition in Chicago to see what everyone was working so hard for.

Lets just say this idea worked! Nearly all the rookies on the team this year either went on that trip or heard about it from those who did go and got interested.

I was one of those freshmen last year, and I was so hooked. I found myself in the very heart of FIRST: the teamwork, the excitement, the incredible engineering, and all that jazz! I couldn't wait until I could be a part of this program, and I'm sure the other rookies that went feel the same.

We have about 11 frosh this year and about 5 new people (from other classes). We also have two exchange students on our team too- one from Vietnam and one from Lebanon!

I would say about 50% of our team is rookies but the thing is they do not get treated like rookies on our team ...because a have one main rule everyone is equal to another and most of the rookies on our team have stepped up and have took a big part of our team roles this year like spirit and PR and basically everything

303 has always been on the small side, but this year we had a lot of new kids join, and it's been great. I'd say about 1/3 of our team is new this year, and luckily they're not the kind that just sit around -- they're acctually wanting to work. Good stuff. :)

Heh...we're a rookie team! And our robot's almost done! I think there's...around 20 people, mostly freshmen (specifically freshmen girls, interestingly enough) We only have 2 seniors though.

We have about 12 rookies this year (which is basicly half our team this year). Though interestingly enough, 2 of those rookies are graduating this year.

For what we do with them, we gave them a bunch of mini lessons before season on every part of our team and let them decide after what they wanted to do. During the few weeks of season we give them more intensive training and by now they help out with every aspect of our team.

Our team has about 20 rookies this year. Many freshmen! A lot of sophomores and juniors too. About 10 of us are team alumni. (We've been around as a team for about 4 years.)

Question. Why are you a senior only program? Shouldn't FIRST be something all students can do? If you have a new team every year, then how will you be able to teach any thing? If you keep students on the team for more than a year, those students will be able to teach the rookies the tricks of the trade.
