Re: Where does your team work?

We do most of our work in a smallish portable that is getting to be too small for our team. We get to roam freely between the wood shop, a shed with our mill and band saw in it, and the computer lab. A few years back we moved all the tables and practiced in the library, most fun in a library ever. But now we, more reasonably, practice in the gym when we can't do so outside.

Our building is mostly done within our school's metal shop, and our little (and i mean little) robotics room. We also have a computer lab, which our business students use to keep things up to date. But we don't use that much.

Team 118 is fortunate enough to be able to work at the NBL (Neutral Buouancy Lab) on NASA property

Re: Where does your team work?

We've got a physics classroom (which is used for classes during the day), and a crowded closet/storage room/machine shop shared with the academy science classes. And I use the term "machine shop" loosely. All we have is a jigsaw, drill press, band saw, and grinder. It is definately not a real shop, not that our school needs one for anything but robotics.

No fancy machine shops like so many of you have.

Re: Where does your team work?

Our team is actually very fortunate. We have our own building on the school campus, but we don't have our own bathroom or welding facilities.

Re: Where does your team work?

We have a metal shop, with a mill, lathes, drill presses, sheet metal tools, etc. One of the newest toys is a cutting laser. It works wonderfully on acrylic, but you can't cut polycarbonate on it because it melts back together. We cut lots of little spacers and such on the laser. Unfortunantly, no one on the team knows Corel Draw all too well, because that's what you need to use on it. :P

We also have a project room, which is an old abandoned chemistry room the school lets us use. It's also shared with a Holography independant study, and there's a bunch of junk around from past clubs and such that I want to throw out but the teachers wont let me ;-; It's quite big, and we have pleanty of room as it is. The room is carpeted, so there's pleanty of little metal shavings stuck in it. Also, only the hot water works... but it doesn't come out hot...

Our biggest sponsor also lets us do work at their shop, which is wonderful of them! We didn't need to go there much (just a few trips once and a while) this year, though, now that we're collecting our own tools and supplies.

We also get to use a physics room, which we only really set foot in durring the planning stages.

Re: Where does your team work?

Our team has an unbelieveable amount of space.

First, we have a building provided by our school district. Classes go on there during the day, but that doesn't infringe on storage space since half the teachers are mentors on the team or don't mind helping out the team. I don't know the square footage, but the building has 25 classrooms or so at our disposal. We use the old Boy's Locker room to store our stuff (which is 2 twice as much as we need). We have at our disposal 30 P4 with HT (Brand New) so computers are never an issue for us. The shop has every tool we would ever need, and if it doesn't, than we have two options:

1. Have our CPC (Career Prep Center) donate the tool to us
or
2. Use the tool at G.M. Tech Center (which is the next building we use)

As I said, we also have space and tools at G.M. Tech Center. I would say we have about 1/2 of G.M's Manufacturing A building at our disposal there. Obviously work goes on their during the day, so we do have to clean up after ourselves. They have so many precision tools, etc. that if it can't be done their, theirs a chance it can't be done at all (just my opinion).

I couldn't ever imagine needing more space for our team.
The First building (provided by the district) was big enough to simulate wireless connectivity for FSN (FIRST SCOUTING NETWORK).

Now if only our team could have some more money...

if you go look at the time lapse i made you will see a good chunk of our shop.

video
whats missing from the pic is the welding room, cad computers table areas where the controls people work and the g5 :ahh: lab for us anomators(i love the apple 23in cinima display ;) )

if you look at the mad cader you will see a few of our cad computers

Re: Where does your team work?

We're in a school boasting around 2400 students. The building is barely 3 years old and we are already overcrowded. We use to have a nice big room w/ a fridge but now we are in what used to be a closet. It's about 15 by 20 and we're feeling cramped. But it's allowed us to become 'closer'. :)

Re: Where does your team work?

Our school has a robotics class, (that most kids on the team don't take, and most kids who take it are not on the team), but thats where we work. However, we have design meetings at members and mentors houses. Especially for this year, we have been using a space on the third floor of our school with around 30 foot cielings.

Re: Where does your team work?

30 ft. ceilings must be nice when you are shooting balls. I know we've had trouble with hitting our low ceilings. Even the huge bandroom isn't even enough. >.<

Re: Where does your team work?

We use the big wood shop at our school, which has the basic woodworking machines in it and two drill presses. We were lucky to be given the use of a storage closet in an adjoining classroom, which is about 7 ft. x 9 ft. , so everything goes back in the closet every night. We do get temporary storage space for large game pieces and the robot crate is allowed in the shop. Best part is, it's a 7 minute drive from our house.

We don't have a metal lathe or mill (working on setting some up at home), but we occasionally talk someone into doing the odd bit of machining required. This year, we contacted the local community college's engineering department. They turned down some sprockets for us so we could reduce weight (2 pounds!). They have about 8 giant knee mills, about a dozen manual lathes and two HAAS CNC machining centers, not to mention a complete welding shop. We hope to foster a closer relationship with them (can you say FREEBIE?). It sure would be nice to drop off a big block of aluminum and a CD and pick up a bag of CNC machined parts the next day :)

Fortunately, we do have a place or two to work when the school is closed due to snow, which isn't that often.
