Where does your team work?
I was just wondering where do other FIRST teams do their building.
My team (1123) is a home school team that allows any high school student to join. We are very lucky to have a sponsor (who doesn't give us ANY money), but allows use to use his facility (which is a stone warehouse, so it is always very dusty and we have to put almost all our tools, materials, metal, etc on pallets, so the employees can put them up on a high shelf :ahh: .) I know that most teams use their school classrooms, and I was wondering, What restriction's does your school have for the use of classrooms, shops, etc. And also do you guys do/handle fundraising? (We have a very, very hard time trying to raise the $6,000) Thanks |
Re: Where does your team work?
CHAOS does most of its work at @ Sponsor Rockwell Automation as well as in Mr. Dave Kelso's garage (our mentor). Its common to have restrictions on students using heavy machinery at big companies for obvious insurance and safety reasons.

Re: Where does your team work?
at community college near our. scholl. we can't get sponsors for other places due to my highschool's policy. this place is more guess and check that percision with CAD. i how i long for autocutters that use CAD.

Re: Where does your team work?
Our team works in two/three different rooms, the PET lab (physics engineering and technology), the school's autoshop, and the drafting room. Design team uses the drafting room and the autoshop. Manufacture are usually in the autoshop too. While programming, electronics, and the web team use the PET lab, there are lots of computers in there, and it's a nice place to wire and program stuff. Sometimes the PET lab is also used to test the robot, but it has also been taken to the main hallway in our school to be tested too. You can see some of these pictures on our website. The autoshop is pretty shabby and space is very limited as well, but at least we have one. ^.^
As for fundrasing, we are fortunate to have some sponsors who supports us (listed on website). However, our main source is truffles. We sell truffle bars of many flavors for a dollar each, everyone in our school loves them so they're pretty easy to sell. However, the problem is that it gets tiring if you do this everyday for the whole year and it's a heavy weight to carry around all day and people have even stopped me in the hallway too. Despite all of these methods, it has also been hard for us to raise enough to fund our robotics team because it always seems as if we are under funded... anyways, I hope that helped. If you have any questions, just post on our forum or send us an email. :D |
Re: Where does your team work?
Our school gave us the old Auto Shop which we (as the engineering class, whom also do FIRST as the "assignment (not really an assignment, just a thing we do)", but there is a club which is the robotics club, which does FIRST) we renovated it and made it into the ROBOTICS ROOM, we have a HUGE place to work in where CAD, Programming, FAB, Assembly, Pneumatics, Electronics, and Test field work. We even have a "War Room" where it is a room 3 sides of the wall are covered in whiteboard. ;) Best of all, our team (students only) renovated and made the place except for the electrical parts that the district had to do.
P.S. - sorry what I just wrote has bad grammar.. i think.. (6 weeks+no sleep= duh.........huh?) |
Re: Where does your team work?
Quote:
As for fund raising, we had 4k from a workshop we put together for middle schoolers over the summer, and 1k from selling cookies (350 cookies a day to a campus with only 600 students) and the rest was a loan from the school. |
Re: Where does your team work?
Right below the nuns, in the convent basement.

Re: Where does your team work?
Lightning Robotics has built in several places over the years:
2000 and 2001 (as 465) we built at our then main sponsor CTS - Creative Technology Service's lab. 2002, 03, 04, 05 we built at our current main sponsor Visteon's lab. 2006 we are building in our teacher's classroom in one of the schools at Plymouth - Canton Educational Park. |
Re: Where does your team work?
We are very fortunate to have a mini machine shop in our school dedicated to robotics only. but mostly used for our VEX and BEST team
we have our basic tools: Band saw drill press mill mathe grinder ect. Most of our building is done at Georgia Tech in the "Tin Building". Basically a airplane hanger that was remodeled to use by "clubs" at GT. We just happen to be vrery lluck and sponsored by the GT robo jackets. Best part about it is, the Robojackets are completely student ran and nowa good bit of them are Wheeler High alumni. |
Re: Where does your team work?
It's actually a funny story how we have the area where we work. We have a technology lab in our school, but other clubs and classes use the space, so we can't use it for storage or our full time work area in fear of someone outside of our team being injured while we are working or having someone playing around with our equipment.
It just so happens that the tech lab had its own bathroom, lockers, and wash area in a seperate back room. When our team was created, and space had to be found to hold the robot, it was decided that the bathroom had to go. So for the past 6 weeks we have been working in a room that less than a year ago was a bathroom. At least the room's still serving a good purpose... |
Re: Where does your team work?
We work in a section of the science wing hallway. We've got a drill press, a horizontal bandsaw, a vertical band saw, and a few power tools. All the works goes on in there until the friday before ship, when we move the robot to the programmer's garage for testing and sleepless nights
|
Re: Where does your team work?
our robotics class has 2 rooms dedicated to it, one of them is our workshop which is about 3x4meters (even less) big, very crowded but the build team manages, it has power tools drills saws, practically anything they need, we even got an electric welder this year (for the aluminum)...the other room, which is our computer room is one of 3 bomb shelters the school has =) so it is supposed to squeeze about 300 people inside of it in-case of emergency...it's got about 10 computers we use and only one of them is a p4 (and a kinda shabby one at that), which animation uses...the rest is for programing and web-site design, since we our work-hours start at 4:30pm we use the schools empty classrooms for our strategy chairmans, even systems team meetings, and until we had permission to sue the cafeteria area we used the classrooms for dinners to, later at night we use the school lobby for our robot testing and we need to carry the ramp high-goal, a floor up and down every time we need to =)...I tell ya, that wood is heavy...

Re: Where does your team work?
we build the entire robot here at our school it is very active when we need it but if we want to come on a sunday or when there is no school we have to pay for it so we try to use it when the school is generally open. as far as our fundraising was this year we had to step up a little bit to raise more money for the team we did the following: Candy sales out of a fundraiser box which works well for a couple of weeks. We did Chiefdelphi.com wristbands which sold for 3.00$ a piece. we sold raffle tickets for 1.00 works ok depending on the prize. and we did banner ads which are at the top of the screen for a student fundraiser and as a sponsor at some level. we had to total out at 500.00$ this year it was originally 400.00 but we decided to go to disney world after atlanta so it cost a hundred dollars more in fundrasing but it all worked out well :) :) good luck this year ;)

Since 1744 is a class and not a team, they don't need to do fundraising. The school covers everything, so they don't need any sponsors :). |
Re: Where does your team work?
We have a sponsorship much like 1123. We have one sponsor that offers us a TON of time and a place to work out of. He owns the Tile and Marble Shop downtown (just a few blocks from the school) and we generally spend all our time building there. We also have a machinist that offers us time and free labor, and we spend time working in his shop too. We did just this year get our own room in the school, but we don't quite have the tools to be self-sustaining there yet. We built the field at the shop, but stored it at the school. Our old bots are in the school as well. General meetings are held in our school classroom, but typically end up at the shop around 4pm.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
1251 works mostly out of our highschool and sometimes at our sponsers warehouse sonnys enterprises, they build carwashes :) so they have alot of spare aluminum for us and can weld machine etc. At our school we also have a full machine shop with a few CAD machines and a full welding shop we took full advantage of the welding instructor this year lol. He has been welding for us about a week straight everyday after school.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
Our work is typically split between two rooms: metal shop and wood shop. The metal shop is the back half of a physics room and no bigger than a small classroom. The wood shop is much larger, but we use it more as a testing ground than a build area. Everyone is crammed into the metal shop right now.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
Our school created and gave us a room/shop for us to work in. We keep all of our tools and build down there but use the Project Room (basically a computer lab) for planning and strategy. We painted our shop and its a very spirited room now :)
|
Re: Where does your team work?
Our team meets in an abandoned refrigerator carton on the center divider of Highway 202 near the Gray Barn Garden Store. It's kind of noisy, but the nursery gives all the compost we can eat!
|
Re: Where does your team work?
We live in a depressing dying city. Too many businesses have left town, including our sponsor, Carrier, who recently packed up and left. :(
We use the tech ed rooms in our school to build. Today is a bad day anyway, we lost power at school this morning because of the weather. The fuel cell did not work, so we were stuck in the dark cold. Then, the fire alarm went off because there was a fire near the gyms. Everyone was evacuated and sent home. I hope we'll be able to work on the robot tonight. |
Re: Where does your team work?
An entire section of our school building is blocked off and given to our team for purposes. From storing aluminum to machinery and even having a practice room--we use the section for building our robot, video taping, to even creating buttons or writing news papers. Personally, it looks like a mini-library for FIRST students.
Fundraisers are always hard and difficult to manage. Usually, it just takes a lot of commitment and time for fundraisers to go through successfully. Moreover, dedication is a huge key. Our coaches continually push the students toward reaching a certain goal in when raising funs for the team-- and somehow, things just pull through. :] |
Re: Where does your team work?
we work in our school's basement, which convewniently has a computer lab! Everyone on the team had to pay money to join, and the NASA grant really helped with funds

Re: Where does your team work?
1293 works in the engineering classroom at Irmo High School. Some tools, some storage, and enough space to store Ockham, Chomp, Circumstance (get it? Chomp and Circumstance?), and all of our tools and KOP bins and what not. Bob's frame hangs from the ceiling support, so he's not much of a bother.
Now, next year once we have to wedge another robot in that storage room, we'll have a challenge that not even Dave Lavery could think up. ;) |
Re: Where does your team work?
Our team works out of our CAD Lab, which sports 20 odd machines all capable of running Inventor 10 and 3ds. During the later part of the season, a small number of qualified pro and student machinists work in our high school machine shop. Only students who have taken the course can machine, so those who can spend plenty of time here. Our facilities worked out well this year, but in past years we have often had a third room where the machine was being assembled. Not this year. It has changed every single year that I have been here.

Re: Where does your team work?
1023 works out of Bedford High School. We work in the Auto and Machine shop. We also use a couple computer rooms, a class room, and sometimes the gym or cafeteria. For the last 3 years and this year, team 279, tech fusion's sponsor (Dana) builds them a field and they, graciously, let us practice there sometimes. Thanks 279!

Re: Where does your team work?
The teacher of team 1345 just told me that we built our robot at the international space station and they had to schedule a special shuttle flight just to get the robot back in order to ship on time.
BTW... the "international space station" is located at 1800 SW 5th Place, Astrological coordinates Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 33312. :) |
Re: Where does your team work?

But as Courtney said, 279 is sponsored by Dana and we work out of their Technical Resource Park (R&D) so there is quite a bit of room there. This year we have our own lab to work out of, but we don’t have a large area for the field anymore so we had to only make a quarter of the field. They graciously donate time on there CNC machine, Rapid prototyping machine, lathes, mills, and drill press. We are a very fortunate team. But again because of budget cuts and time restraints we had to find other places to help us machine parts. Owens Community college decided they would give us a hand in parts when we needed them, they cut a few plates for us as well as some top secret stuff. I am glad that we have the resources we do and I appreciate all of the people that have helped us find space or helped us machine. |
Re: Where does your team work?
I heard that we will try to get out there and practice this weekend! I'll most likely just go Saturday. But it is always fun to see you guys and see what you're up to!
|
Re: Where does your team work?
We do most of our work in a smallish portable that is getting to be too small for our team. We get to roam freely between the wood shop, a shed with our mill and band saw in it, and the computer lab. A few years back we moved all the tables and practiced in the library, most fun in a library ever. But now we, more reasonably, practice in the gym when we can't do so outside.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
Our building is mostly done within our school's metal shop, and our little (and i mean little) robotics room. We also have a computer lab, which our business students use to keep things up to date. But we don't use that much.

Re: Where does your team work?
We've got a physics classroom (which is used for classes during the day), and a crowded closet/storage room/machine shop shared with the academy science classes. And I use the term "machine shop" loosely. All we have is a jigsaw, drill press, band saw, and grinder. It is definately not a real shop, not that our school needs one for anything but robotics.
No fancy machine shops like so many of you have. |
Re: Where does your team work?
Our team is actually very fortunate. We have our own building on the school campus, but we don't have our own bathroom or welding facilities.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
We have a metal shop, with a mill, lathes, drill presses, sheet metal tools, etc. One of the newest toys is a cutting laser. It works wonderfully on acrylic, but you can't cut polycarbonate on it because it melts back together. We cut lots of little spacers and such on the laser. Unfortunantly, no one on the team knows Corel Draw all too well, because that's what you need to use on it. :P
We also have a project room, which is an old abandoned chemistry room the school lets us use. It's also shared with a Holography independant study, and there's a bunch of junk around from past clubs and such that I want to throw out but the teachers wont let me ;-; It's quite big, and we have pleanty of room as it is. The room is carpeted, so there's pleanty of little metal shavings stuck in it. Also, only the hot water works... but it doesn't come out hot... Our biggest sponsor also lets us do work at their shop, which is wonderful of them! We didn't need to go there much (just a few trips once and a while) this year, though, now that we're collecting our own tools and supplies. We also get to use a physics room, which we only really set foot in durring the planning stages. Dave~ Team 706 |
Re: Where does your team work?
Our team has an unbelieveable amount of space.
First, we have a building provided by our school district. Classes go on there during the day, but that doesn't infringe on storage space since half the teachers are mentors on the team or don't mind helping out the team. I don't know the square footage, but the building has 25 classrooms or so at our disposal. We use the old Boy's Locker room to store our stuff (which is 2 twice as much as we need). We have at our disposal 30 P4 with HT (Brand New) so computers are never an issue for us. The shop has every tool we would ever need, and if it doesn't, than we have two options: 1. Have our CPC (Career Prep Center) donate the tool to us or 2. Use the tool at G.M. Tech Center (which is the next building we use) As I said, we also have space and tools at G.M. Tech Center. I would say we have about 1/2 of G.M's Manufacturing A building at our disposal there. Obviously work goes on their during the day, so we do have to clean up after ourselves. They have so many precision tools, etc. that if it can't be done their, theirs a chance it can't be done at all (just my opinion). I couldn't ever imagine needing more space for our team. The First building (provided by the district) was big enough to simulate wireless connectivity for FSN (FIRST SCOUTING NETWORK). Now if only our team could have some more money... Tomasz Bania |

if you go look at the time lapse i made you will see a good chunk of our shop.
video whats missing from the pic is the welding room, cad computers table areas where the controls people work and the g5 :ahh: lab for us anomators(i love the apple 23in cinima display ;) ) if you look at the mad cader you will see a few of our cad computers |
Re: Where does your team work?
We're in a school boasting around 2400 students. The building is barely 3 years old and we are already overcrowded. We use to have a nice big room w/ a fridge but now we are in what used to be a closet. It's about 15 by 20 and we're feeling cramped. But it's allowed us to become 'closer'. :)
|
Re: Where does your team work?
Our school has a robotics class, (that most kids on the team don't take, and most kids who take it are not on the team), but thats where we work. However, we have design meetings at members and mentors houses. Especially for this year, we have been using a space on the third floor of our school with around 30 foot cielings.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
30 ft. ceilings must be nice when you are shooting balls. I know we've had trouble with hitting our low ceilings. Even the huge bandroom isn't even enough. >.<
|
Re: Where does your team work?
We use the big wood shop at our school, which has the basic woodworking machines in it and two drill presses. We were lucky to be given the use of a storage closet in an adjoining classroom, which is about 7 ft. x 9 ft. , so everything goes back in the closet every night. We do get temporary storage space for large game pieces and the robot crate is allowed in the shop. Best part is, it's a 7 minute drive from our house.
We don't have a metal lathe or mill (working on setting some up at home), but we occasionally talk someone into doing the odd bit of machining required. This year, we contacted the local community college's engineering department. They turned down some sprockets for us so we could reduce weight (2 pounds!). They have about 8 giant knee mills, about a dozen manual lathes and two HAAS CNC machining centers, not to mention a complete welding shop. We hope to foster a closer relationship with them (can you say FREEBIE?). It sure would be nice to drop off a big block of aluminum and a CD and pick up a bag of CNC machined parts the next day :) Fortunately, we do have a place or two to work when the school is closed due to snow, which isn't that often. |
Re: Where does your team work?
we work out of our school, we got a pretty good shop

Re: Where does your team work?
We work in a school classroom, and we aren't allowed to run any of the machinery if there are no teachers there.

Re: Where does your team work?
Our team works in this new lab on the third floor of the new building. It is quite nice but it is smaller than our old lab and it is a pain to get into on saturdays but it is cleaner. Better said it was cleaner. We got some new millimachines and saws this year.

Re: Where does your team work?
We have been working at motorola since we started. They let us have our own little "robot room" and then they gave us enough space to where we have our playing field.

Re: Where does your team work?
330 is another homeschooled team, and we build in the basement machine shop of a local power plant. Tools: drill press, grinder, and hand tools. We also do a little building at a mentor/sponsor's machine shop half an hour or so away, and that is also where most of our machining is done.
|
Re: Where does your team work?
Team 213 makes use of our high school's attached vocational center, which has a CAD lab with 20-odd machines, which run Inventor beautifully. This is where we do most of the work. Downstairs, we have a full machine shop. We also make use of the automotive shop for our sheet metal needs.
