Development Assistance Requested

General Information about openFIRST

The openFIRST Portal System is an integrated set of modules which may be used together to create or enhance a web site. It is directed towards teams participating in the FIRST robotics competition. The openFIRST Portal System is a completely student-developed project that has had contributions from a wide variety of teams from Brasil, Canada and the United States.

The openFIRST Project has initiatives other than the Portal system, including FIRST Blogs which lists the personal weblogs of past and present people involved in FIRST and has assisted other FIRST-Related Organisations, generally by providing free web hosting and bandwidth. People are always welcome to volunteer to help with the Portal system or other initiatives but from time to time we'll post specific requests for help with something in particular here.

Specifics of this Request

The Portal system is undergoing a major revision from version 1 to a version 2. Jamie (leader of the development team) would like some help porting the modules from the old system (version 1) to the new system (version 2). He's working on openfirst.news and would appreciate if others could work on some of the remaining modules. Generally speaking making the changes will require you to have some knowledge of XML and PHP; ideally you would also have knowledge of CVS, but, this can be learned from tutorials and existing documentation (or I'll help you if you ask nicely :-)).

If you're going to take on converting a module, let Jamie know at jamie@openfirst.org (for a sample of an already converted module, see the awards module in the openFIRST CVS repository).

Re: Development Assistance Requested

Since as some of you may know SourceForge is now offering Subversion (SVN) access to all projects there is a planned migration from CVS to SVN. Therefore, those familiar with Subversion (but not CVS) may be more comfortable once this new change has been made.
