Debating on fixing a 1980something Dodge Ram Charger. It needs some minor engine repairs, body work (rusted spots and new paint job), and some interior work (cracks on plastic door panels, ripped carpet).
If I don't work on it, I'm probably gonna get rid of it and look for a Jeep Grand Cherokee, or some Ford/Chevy SUV (Blazer, Expedition, Explorer, etc).

93 Ford Escort Stationwagon. It's Camen Green (even though Elgin insists that it's blue)
That ugly teal color that EVERYONE had back in the nineties.

1972 Plymouth Duster 5.9 V-8. For those of you who dont know what it is you can check it out at www.CarsNrides.com Look for FlaminDuster. Or at www.cardomain.com Look for 360 Plymouth duster. So far ive hit 120 on estimated quarter mile, aka: backroads :) This car will break your neck when i hit the gas. Its also funny to watch the inverse relationship between the speedometer and the fuel gage. Fast Robots and fast cars Team 348.

Although all of these cars sound very impressive I must assure all of you that I in fact drive the most $@#$@#$@#$@#$@#ing ride of call. Drum roll please...1988 Ford Tempo. This beautiful 2 door cassette playing machine comes complete with a front bumper held up with only duct tape, the seat belts only work if you open the door AFTER you have done it up, AND it only broke down 10 times this last winter! Please no need to push and shove...I can take all of you for a spin.

My car is 99% the samething - but all black. It even has *4* bucket seats - yes, no bench in the rear - and it's all cloth! Also - has the 16 optional rims (Much better looking IMHO) But it does have the sun/moon roof and all the options of the 1989 model year! W00T! :D

3.1 V-6, all digital dash cluster, engine replaced ~5 years ago (thanks to the intake previously noted in this thread) and the trans is just a little over a year old (Still has 2 years warantee - Jasper tranny!)

That's about it - happy motoring!! :D

This morning I test drove a 2005 50th Anniversary Ford ThunderBird Convertible.
OH YEAH this thing is sweet, and I am a dodge guy. But this is probably the only car in my opinion that Ford has done right. With the 3.9L V8 putting out close to 280 HP this car flys. I still have goose bumps.

LOL. Goosebumps from the new thunderbird? Test drive a GT mustang, GTO, Trans am, Camaro or Any corvette. I was luck enough to do a ride along at a Autocross in a 96 corvette C4, That car will put you in the seats!!! The torque of those cars is simply amazing!!

The EV 1 felt faster off the line then a standard corvette. I got to ride along in side by side comparisons in a Corvette, Mustang, Trans-am and Camaro in 2001. I was also in a EV1 on a nearby track.

The EV 1 was a GM limited production/test car. It was all electric and was only available for lease during the late 90s in California. All electric means all torque available all the time. It was an amazing vehicle, but sadly, GM destroyed them all rather then sell them. Coefficent of drag of 0.19? Axel torque of 1206 lb ft? Electric landspeed record of 183 MPH?
Brilliant piece of engineering. A few more factoids.

Well today just kept getting better and better. After the T-bird a friend of mine tossed me the keys to a 1978 Stingray Vette, and says heres a few bucks go put some gas in her. Then I come back and jokingly I ask if I can borrow the vette for my date, and again was tossed the keys. OH YEAH, first the bird then a vette. Today was just awesome.

Ah yes I rember the EV-1 Quite well, but I must admit those are some very fascinating numbers! I could see how it felt so fast of the line with that much torque. I simply belive that the ev1 was simply too far ahead of its time.

Working in a shop does have it's advantages. Especially when you need to test drive the car for 30 miles to make sure the check engine light doesn't come on again. :D I have driven too many cars to list because of working in the shop, but I am looking foward to Friday. I am going to get to drive a new C6 Corvette (as well as many other cars) on an autocross like course. :D

Ok, you've seen my 1968 Ford Mustang. If not look around in my post and you'll find it. :p

Well, here's pics I just took tonight of my 1997 Toyota Camry LE and my 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Estate wagon, 9 passenger. The Camry is my primary transportation. The Caprice used to be but it's getting tired with 167,000 miles on it and now I keep it as a spare vehicle, plus it's my "truck" when I need to haul anything. I'm currently waiting for a stainless steel brake line set I bought for it last week to show up so I can replace the rotted line going to the rear. Now the brake lines won't rust anymore! :D

You may notice the Camry has "237" stickers on the hood. We did that as a test to see how well the vinyl adhesive sheets we (the team) made letters out of would hold up especially since I don't do anything to cosmetically take care of the Camry. So far so good and I've done nothing to try to preserve them. I do however keep the car on a strict maintance plan mechanically since I drive it alot and don't want to get stuck anywhere. Currently it has just over 95,000 on it.

Re: What kind of car do you drive??

Wow, talk about bringing back old threads...this one started in 2002...

I drive a gray/silver/[insert other close color here] 1990 Mazda MPV V6 4WD. Yes, a minivan with a V6 and 4WD. After reading TurboMinivan.com, I wanted to rice it out (do non-Californians use that term?). After some investigation, however, I think that the engine compartment is too small and I would probably have to remove the heavy 4WD system. Then I realized that it might be just as fun to change the suspension to go off-roading. But the engine would also need some upgrades because it doesn't have enough torque. That, and I have no money...

Re: What kind of car do you drive??

I just bought a new car ... well, it's a midsize SUV. But I have a good reason, really!

First of all, the vehicle is a 2002 Saturn VUE. It's black/silver, has a V6 engine and is equipped with AWD. It also has air conditioning, cup holders and is safe, unlike the '93 Saturn SL2 I was driving up until a month ago.

The reason for not buying a more fuel-efficient vehicle? I go to school in Houghton, Michigan. For those who don't know, it's way way up north, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It starts snowing in September, and doesn't let up until March. Our average yearly snowfall is between 250"-300" of snow. And don't get me started on the hills! They're crazy steep. So when I was vehicle-shopping, it needed to be something with 4WD or AWD, preferably with a larger engine and that was safer to drive than my tiny car. The VUE fit everything we were looking for (and I'm now a loyal Saturn customer - woo!) and it still gets pretty good gas milage; 18-20mpg city, and 25-28mpg highway.

Since people are bringing this back I'll update my post that I made wayyyy back on 05-22-2002.

My dad got a new car last fall, so when he started driving it this spring he gave me his old one. It's a '99 Intrigue that he managed to put 125k miles on, but it still looks really nice and runs just fine.

I thought I posted in this thread a long time ago, but I guess not.

Anyway, this summer I upgraded from grey 1987 Ford Tempo with < 100HP and a five speed manual transmission to a 2000 light blue Mercury Sable.

I decided enough was enough when it died coming home from work at 2:30 in the morning about three miles from my house without a cell phone to call home.

Now I just wish my Sable had a five speed manual transmission; I hate the stupid four speed automatic that is in it, the shift knob is in the center console already.

Well, as an update since I posted 2 weeks ago, I bought another car............for parts.

I had the word out I was looking to replace the tired Oldsmobile 307 in my Caprice wagon and I found someone who wanted to sell a 1984 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a good running 307 in it and lower mileage (103k instead of the 167k mine has). It's a lot cheaper than buying a rebuilt long block or even rebuilding the current original motor in the Caprice. The other problem was even though my car is a Chevy it came from the factory with the Olds 307 (engine code "Y" in the VIN) which I found out means a Chevy 305 or 350 won't bolt in. They used a different bolt pattern and unless I wanted to swap out bell housings/transmissions/possibly also the drive shaft and exhaust...........more work and money than I wanted to get involved in.

Although the Delta 88 is in good shape and road worthy it has a major cosmetic strike against it and the reason I got it REAL cheap and why the person before me was having trouble selling it. It was an extra car that was done up for a Halloween display last year. The car was originally silver with a gray vinyl top but was sprayed black and had a black and purple leopard print top installed. The grill and some trim was removed and sprayed gold before being reinstalled. The car is pimp! I'll have to get photos of it since no one would probably believe me. :D It's not at my house since I don't have room for it, nor do I want to be seen driving it! :p It's several towns away from me where I'm stripping it before junking the remains but I'll have to remember to bring my camera one of the days.

I did find photos of a similar 1984 Delta 88 on Ebay which I attached so you'll atleast know what it looks like....................just instead of the maroon, picture it flat black with gold trim and a black/purple leopard print top!

I also drive a 1998 Ford Taurus SE, the thing is a pain, it takes off on its own, and will actually keep going the same speed for a long time without ur foot on any pedal, really its the same as any other one of that year.

As for my dad, he has a 1953 Ford F-100, not stock, mustang 2 front, 302, and the exaught has been kicked out the side, its sweet.

I got lucky with what type of car I have. I can't even legally get my license yet but my family got me cars for birthday gifts. For my fifteenth birthday, my great grandfather got me a 2006 BMW Z4 Roadster in electric blue. I'm also getting my mom's Lexus Rx330 when I can drive.

switched over from my F-250 to a Corrola Type S.

what a HUGE difference in driving, this is my first time really driving something so small.....really really scary

Well, I fianlly got rid of my old '91 Blazer ( In the process of running it into the ground, bwahaha ) and got a new truck : a 2005 Chevy Colorado Z71 Crew Cab! It was my brothers truck for about 10 months, but he decided he wanted a new GTO instead... so I took it off his hands for him!

Its got the i-5 which I'm very pleased with ( great milage, I get ~20 wit lots of city driving... plus its pretty peppy ), lots of room for hauling people and stuff around. Overall its a really good truck for my lifestyle, lol

A couple of pics :

Can't wait to get my 17's

Purdy trees...

Also can't wait to get some 2" lift shackles and crank my TB's

I heart my posi, especially after I leave work

I read a lot of car enthusiast magazines, and also Consumer Reports. For some reason, there seems to be a bigger disconnect between magazine writers and owners in the case of Colorado/Canyon than about any vehicle I can think of. The magazines say it's slow, crude, a gas hog, has a cheap-looking interior, and on and on, but the people I know who have these trucks like them. What counts is the people who drive them every day, so it's good that owners see these vehicles differently than the people who do magazine road tests.

well i dont know too much about the colorado/canyon and such but a couple years back in the s10/sonoma/blazer/jimmy era. there were so many types of the truck that you cant just say "an s10 is sweet" or "sucks".. the zr2 lifted etc package, the stock, the zq8 'performance' suspension... the xtreme.. so theres like a type for everyone. and some that just dont work for others..
.... i wish i had a posi. or a lasd or locker of some sorts... an open one just doesnt work in snow...

I had a '95 S10 for about a year, and while it convinced me that I'm not a "pickup truck person." It was kind of fun, it its way. It was a short bed 2wd standard cab, and had the 4.3 engine and 5-speed manual. By far the most fun I had with it was when I won my class in an SCCA autocross with it. It was a small event with not very tough competition, but in the class it ran, (H stock) that S10 was a fairly good autocrosser. The engine had lots of torque, so I just started in first, shifted to second, and didn't need to shift any more the rest of the run. I had 215x60 tires on the stock wheels. With the stock 205x75 tires, it would not have autocrossed at all well.

As far as the Canyon/Colorado, a complaint common to AutoWeek, Car and Driver, and Consumer Reports tests is that the truck was slower than the V-6 competition but didn't get any better gas mileage. As I remember, all of these tests were of 4wd, extended or crew cab automatics. I'd suspect that a "light weight" i.e. 2wd standard cab Canyon/Colorado with the I-5 and 5-speed manual would be quite peppy, and could get good fuel economy if not driven too hard.

oh really... ive never really read many opinions on those but number wise i thought i heard that the I-5 has more balls than the 4.3 v6. and lighter. and better gas mileage. they hafta compare stdcab vs std cab. but i guess nowadays everyone wants xcab or crewcab. and 4wd i guess. i like my 2wd except uphills in ice

The new I-5 has more horsepower than the 4.3, but you need to rev it higher to get the power. I suspect GM's still using a 4-speed autobox and wider gear spacing compared to the 5-speeds in most of the competition hurts the Colorado's 0-60 and quarter mile times. Everything else being equal, I'm sure the new I-5 gets better fuel economy than the 4.3. I only got about 21-22 on the highway with my manual transmission 4.3, and quite a bit less than that in city driving, and my S10 was a regular cab, short bed 2wd, the lightest version of the S10.

and just to show how off an 2wd/4.3l/auto/stdcab/longbed might make a difference with shortbox stdcab, im getting about average of 16mpg in city driving.

Compared to the 13mpg I was getting with my old truck, yes, its pretty good, lol :yikes: But seriously, for a truck its size it gets great milage.

As for it being slow... its not at all. Its not like, Corvette fast or anything, but its waaay faster than most in its class. Heck, my old truck ( 4.3L V6, recently rebuilt w/Edelbrock intake manifold and throttle body, Heddman headers w/Super Turbo mufflers, and an HEI powerpack ) was pretty dang quick, but the 'Rado blows it away.

Heres a video I took of a 0-75ish acceleration, as you can see its not to shabby...

HPI RS4 pro sport! huah! that's a 1/10th scale rc for those who don't know... it's kickin enough for me.

For when I start driving though, it's a sweet toyata corolla le. Unless I can convince my dad to let me attempt to make the black 76 'vette start again.... Though it needs an exhaust system (doesn't have one at all...), and a new carb. However, I'll probably also have to take out the nitrus.... My grandfather used it for streetracing in his glory days. Personally, my favorite part of the beast is the dual 900 watt subs in the back- With those you can make the whole monster bounce!

A Car and Driver comparison test of 4wd automatic crew cab trucks with the largest available engines came up with the following results for 0-60 times. Other magazine test have produced similar results. These acceleration times are part of why the Colorado/Canyon has received some less-than-favorable magazine reviews.

Chevy Colorado 8.7 sec
Dodge Dakota 8.5 sec
Honda Ridgeline 7.9 sec
Nissan Frontier 7.6 sec
Toyota Tacoma 7.1 sec

The thing is, all of these trucks are "plenty fast enough" which is why the drivers of Colorados are perfectly satisfied with the acceleration of their machines. I had a VW Jetta TDI which was "plenty fast enough" to blend in with freeway traffic, etc., even with a 0-60 time of 11 seconds or so.

Mini-D67 05-12-2005 00:33

Re: What kind of car do you drive??

Well, you all know that those numbers can be flawed... if those are just "stomp it" accelerations, then yeah sure the I-5 will be slower. With a good lauch however, its quicker ( most of its power is higher up in the RPM range, like a 4 banger, so if its revved up a little it hook better ) off the line. I've timed it and I get to 60 in about 7.2ish seconds with a good 1.5k RPM launch on new tires...

But, I didn't buy the truck for performance... its nice little perk, but not the point :D

I miss my 99 Dodge Dakota Sport. It had the extended cab, 6ft bed with the tonoue cover and with the cover i got around 22 mpg if i was light on the gas, but most of the time i got around 18-19mpg. And under the hood was a 318 5.2L V8. 0-60 in around 6.8-7.0. I loved that truck and a 5.2L was way too much engine for it. Honda civics and other tuners got a surprise when they pulled up next to my truck. . .

Is yours a manual transmission? I suspect that would definitely be a "good thing" from a performance standpoint with the Colorado. The test I posted, and all comparison tests I've seen on these trucks have been automatics.

When testing automatics, the "car buff" magazines like Car and Driver do what it takes to get the best times short of dropping it in gear with the engines revved. Generally, they would be "torquing up" with one foot on the brake and one on the throttle. Except for the Honda which is full time 4wd, they probably would have tested these trucks in 2wd since they were part-time 4wd with no center diff.

Unless they have changed their procedure since the last time I read their description, Consumer Reports just "floors it" when testing automatics rather than going for the best times like the enthusiast magazines.

Mini-D67 05-12-2005 12:41

Re: What kind of car do you drive??

Unfortunatly, the crewcab isn't offered in a manual :(

From what I saw of the comparision they did on the C&D TV show, they just punched it with no launch... Not sure if thats how they did it for the magizine though.

But anyway, if I really wanted performance, I could've got a Cobalt SS or something, its a truck lol

hmm. unless theyhad a nice sugarwatercoated grippy ground with upgraded tires, i doubt they "just floored it" much less brake torqued it. half those trucks would not be going anywhere... just sitting there with one tire smoking. unless they used a truck with anything other than an open diff, the stock tires dont bite enough to send the truck forwards... no weight over the axle + lotsa torque = no traction.

The way to get the best time would vary depending upon the characteristics of each vehicle. Of these trucks, the Dakota, with its big displacement, mildly tuned V-8, you would need to modulate the throttle in order to control wheel spin. The same might be the case with the Nissan and Toyota's V-6's, but they would have less torque at low rpm. With the Colorado, you could probably "torque it up" at full throttle and not get too much wheel spin. With the Honda's full time four wheel drive, you could "torque up" at full throttle and not get wheel spin at all. The bottom line is that the enthusiast magazines experiment and use whatever technique gets the best times.

Two words green... Traction Control.

And I dont know what trucks you've driven, but of the ones I have - flooring it from a stop will not, in most cases, break the tires loose bad enough to effect acceleration too badly.

nope. dont have that. 98 4.3l s10... basically stock. i can break my tires loose way into second gear. into 3rd if i wanted to. so yes i would say it would affect acceleration a lot. then again on the other hand my friend'd dakota either has very little low end torque (dont know much about dakotas) or has full time traction control. so it cant slip the tires on dry pavement. or smaller engine. unno which one he has. but the tach goes to 7k before it goes red so obviously its powerband is different from my truck where redline is at 5k...

You're obviously talking about a manual... we were discussing autos, as that is what C&D tested.

Heck, I could break the tires (tire?) loose on my firends old Saab 4 banger if I popped the clutch...

What Saab? My brother had an old Saab 99 for a while. That thing was from 1976 and had so much technology in it. A good car, except his didn't run much.

Being a "4 banger" doesn't make it hard to break the tires loose. The Honda S2000 is 'only' a "4 banger", but it makes 200 horsepower out of its 2L engine. I can chip the tires through 3rd (maybe more, but by then I've run out of speed limit) gear in my girlfriends 4 banger Miata.

I could break the tires loose on my old Storm going into 2nd, and it had a automatic and a 4 cylinder engine.

Nothing wrong with small efficient engines. (I've a 1.8L that pulls 140HP and gets 37MPG combined)
Manuals are more fun, but popping the clutch is not good for them.
Traction control reduces accidents.

wait. where did i say i drove stick? my truck is an auto. once the engine revs up to 5k(in this case with the tires slipping) it automatically goes up a gear. and im talking without neutralbombing or braketorquing.

Well no wheelspin isn't what you want either. If I remember my drag racing basics, 16% wheelspin is ideal for accelerating.
The 1.8L four in my grandmothers corolla easily breaks traction and it far zippier than the other cars I've driven. (1.4L 4cyl, 2.4L 4cyl, 3.0L V6) Nowadays head design, good programming, porting, and forced induction change power more than displacement or cylinders. A Euro Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR FQ-400 makes four hundred horsepower off a 2.0L four. A Toyota/Lexus 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 makes 300 hp. A Honda K20A makes 220 hp of a naturally aspirated 2.0L four. Some of the old B series Honas made 200hp off 1.8L. A 2JZ-GTE 3.0L straight six makes 300hp. A Honda C32B makes 288hp on a 3.2L V6. Subaru STi 2.5L boxer four 300hp. The previously mentioned S2000's F20 (or is it F22, I can never remember) makes 200hp. The 2.3L mazda MZR (as seen in the mazdaspeed 6) makes 276hp. A Dodge SRT-4 makes something in the neighborhood of 240hp on 2.4L. For reference a 2005 Ford Mustang GT makes 300hp off of a 4.6L V8. And, yes clutch dropworks, unless you're driving a JDM Honda Civic/Integra DC5 Type-R with their ultralight flywheel. (If you are all should worship you)

wait really? thats curious. i thought zero wheel spin would be best. can you explain in more detail about that 16%? 16% of what? and when? throughout the whole run? and 16% of the tire's tangential velocity is lost before the ground pushes back? or 16% of the whole run (1/4mile?) is done with the tires slipping? (including chirping in each gear?)

It is, but since people aren't psychically connected to the axel, if you shoot for zero, you go really slow and don't put down much power and your engine can bog off the line. Too much, and, well, your tires don't last too long and it's slow. A little above lets you keep putting down plenty of power without losing too mcuh too wheelspin. I think the 16% means either it is at 116% of it's torque holding capacity, or it's rotating 116% as fast as is needed to to go the speed it's going. I heard the number from a friend that does a lot of drag racing, but I didn't ask for clarification, since I wasn't interested due to the fact that he races trucks (a blue S10 with a V8 swap) which I don't really care about.

I heard the number from a friend that does a lot of drag racing, but I didn't ask for clarification, since I wasn't interested due to the fact that he races trucks (a blue S10 with a V8 swap) which I don't really care about.

hm. dont understand your part about people not connected to the axle but i guess the no boggin kinda makes sense. well different rear ends kinda help that. but say you dont care how fast your tires wear.... is it still 16%? can you see if you can ask more detail about that from your friend? im curious.
and ooooh. a blue truck. $@#$@#$@#$@#. if i had a blue truck id be SO much faster :D
what'd he stick in there? 350 like everyone else?

What I meant was that you aren't connected to the drivetrain, so you can't correct for wheelspin and such instantly.
If I see my friend, otherwise known as the "Jolly Redneck" (I won't reveal his real name), I'll ask him. But, I switched from Orange High School (where the robotics team and the jolly redneck are) to Riverside High, which are in two different counties. I still go to Orange for Robotics, but I'm not there that often. My guess is that he was told/read this and can't really explain it too well, since he, well, probably doesn't know much physics. I imagine this varies depending on the tires, engine, flywheel, car mass, and, clearly, if the car has traction control. This has someone say 10%, so I guess opinions vary.

I drive a 99' Silver Acura Integra. It's only temporary while my real ride, the Mars Rover, is in space. I am beginning to get worried because those guys at NASA said they would have it back by now. ;)

I have a few cars to my name

Vehicle provided to me and a select few at work:
'99 White w/ Blue Stripe all the way around Chevy K1500 V8 Turbo-Diesel Crew Cab, Extended Bed with a Cap on the back. I'll post a picture of it sometime soon - Just recently blew the tranny on it so I will have to wait to see if my job is going to fix it or get us a brand new truck instead. The truck is a monster and clocks in with only 65K miles on it or so.

To go to & from Work (Summer Time):
'95 Red Olds Cutlass Supreme SL - V6 3.1L - Leather Interior, Decent Sound System provided by an old Pioneer Radio - MTX 5" / 8" Sub - Planet Audio Amp and Rear Speakers - Like I said not to shabby, I just put a nice looking HID Kit on it =) My little girl has only had 2 owners my grandfather & myself and she clocks in at about 46K - 47K miles on it.

To go to & from Work (Winter Time):
'00 Tan Chevy Blazer LS - V6 4.3L 4WD - Cloth Interior, Decent Souns System provided by a Blaupunkt Radio, Planet Audio Sub & Amp, Also 1 - 3 owners myself included she clocks in at about 116K miles.

I wouldn't change anything performance wise but definitely would like to give it a look to make people say wow.

Sorry for double posting, but the Honda S2000, makes actually two-hundred and fourty bhp out of 2.0litres, Naturally aspirated. Highest bhp/litre figure of any car on the road. That of course was the pre-05 version, with the F20, the new ones have 2.2 litres(aka the F22), so it kinda makes it a little less now. They uprated the litreage(new word alert!) to give it more torque, and the rev's have been dropped from 9000 to I believe 8200.

PS-JDM cars aren't the holy grail of everything.

PPS-most of those engines you listed have forced induction, which kind of takes away from the goodness of it. Also, a Supra's 2JZ creates 330bhp, not 300. ;)
