What to do with all these poof balls?

I vote that we all get together this summer, and have a gigantic dodge-ball thing... robots, humans, it'll all be wholesome, good FIRST fun...

Or all of us that have shooter robots can use them to help the war efforts in Iraq. How freaky would a wave of poof balls be?

For some reason I find that whole thought disturbing.....

Dodgeball of course. We had several spontaneous matches erupt throughout the build season.

These things are so small and compressible, that I think a lot will show up at Regionals and the Championship for autographs of friends and dignitaries. A keepsake for the event that isn't as large as the goal toppers of 2001 (which my son still has from Einstein in my basement -- Dean's sig still look good). ;)

 Our team's had a good idea on what to do with them, but I won't elaborate just yet...look for it in our pit at Pittsburgh and Chesapeake...

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

Can you imagine if everyone brought their poof balls to Atlanta! hmmm... big open space between arena and pits... thousands of poof balls...thousands of high school kids hopped up on sugar and robotics.... sounds a little dangerous.

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

I think our team is taking them to the Pittsburgh regional....which er...I fear for my life. 6 hours on a short bus + multiple poof balls = death of brain cells. Coming back from the kick off with just 1 was dangerous!!! May luck be with you on all future games of dodgeball.

O.o in a enclosed space to lol. matter of fact that is really scarey.

I think there could be something fun to do at IRI. they hand the human player competiton last year, why not 5 vs 5 dodgeball throwdowns at IRI. We could even do 4 and robot vs 4 and robot. That would be insane, fo shizzle.

If we did Dean's hand would be sore for months and/or the Georgiadome would have some broken lights with the dodge ball aftermath of the signing.. Right? everyone gets a signed ball and a ball thrown at them :) That would be fun!!!

This idea was suggested also right after kickoff by atomickitten.

A great idea!

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

1) The company that sold us all the Poof balls is willing to buy them back for $3.99 each (ha, ha, nasty rumor-starter!)

2) Donate them to your local children's day care center. Good idea, been thought of by many teams. Just be sure to wash them off first (yucky when the children start to lick/eat the Poof balls....hmm, maybe not such a good idea after all)

3) Donate them to local hospital to use at their discretion for children's ward and/or Alzheimer's ward (again, be sure to clean them off before donating)

4) churches and other social service agencies (as an example, the national centers for Interfaith Hospitality Networks www.ihn.org)

5) Chop them up into shreds and give to FedEx stores to use as packing material (hmmmm, probably not as biodegradable as cornstarch packing noodles they currently use)

GOT IT! Why not have the team members sign the balls and give them to the school principal, the main sponsors, the mentors, etc as a "token of appreciation" trophy that will sit on their desk and be a topic of conversation for future reference.

Just think of an easier way to spread "gracious professionalism" and the spirit of FIRST.

By the way, our team is madly chopping-up tetras from 2005 into trophies....Be aware that your team might be getting one from us this year!

efoote868 03-03-2006 19:47

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

speaking of buying back, i wonder if FIRST people enjoyed stock shares of the company just before the game was announced...

i think if one was in dire need, one could use the robot's battery, and get a fire going with the ball in a few seconds...

Dodgeball isn't the best idea - one of our guys managed to get a poofball through a shatterproof glass window.

Our first (test) poof ball died quickly; it was neatly halved afterwards.

Okay, how about poof balls + pool of water = ;) I see water polo or bobbing for poofs in the not-so-distant future! On the plus side, it may also wash some grime off the balls, too.

I'm not so enthusiastic about bobbing for poofs. I'm not sure if I want to experience the taste of overused, soggy foam...

I don't see robots swimming anytime soon, this might be a lack of imagination on my part though.

Poofballs are really quite special, forged from the strongest of foams, capable of smashing through plateglass windows with the gentlest of underhand tosses - weakened only by clumsily designed loading mechanisms...

I think they might be filled with magic smoke.

Spaz 06-03-2006 07:10

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

Donating the balls is a great idea... unless they look like most of ours. All chewed up and nasty.

Dodge ball with poof balls? ouch... I've been hit with enough this season. but it would be fun to get all the balls together, just to show how many were used!

since they are all multicolored, I think it would be fun if we could somehow come up with a giant piece of artwork to do with the balls (place them out to create an image) i don't really know how well it would work though.

I think ours will either be taken home by members as a trophy, or they will just remain in their boxes laying around "robot central" (I know that at least one is coming home with me, though)

I like the daycare idea... but our poof balls were all torn to bits and pieces... they probably aren't too safe to give to small children anymore... with bits of plastic strips easily torn off.

I like the idea of having the team sign them and give them out. I'll have to suggest that to my team captains

the Atlanta Dodge ball fest 06 sounds fun too... hmmm choices choices.

You guys are thinking too small...we make a giant cage out of lexan and extruded aluminum...and make a giant poof ball pit.

You know like the kind that McDonald's have in their playplaces...excpet this will be like a 50'x50'x5' poof ball pit in Centennial Park

that sounds like fun!

Make it distance, and accuracy.

Anybody can shoot off a spaceship, but if you want to reach Mars, you have to be somewhat accurate with your aim.

Someone bring a bullseye target and duct tape, and each robot gets 5 shots. Best shot of the five is marked -- next shooter!

You also need to find a sponsor for awards (best shot, tightest pattern, most balls destroyed, etc.).

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

I sort of like the dodgeball in Atlanta idea. How about at the annual Chiefdelphi webhug, everyone brings a few personally signed poof balls. After the webhug, everyone unloads in a massive game of dodgeball. After we're all tired, or needed on the field/in the pits, everyone walks away with a few randomly signed poof balls, then start a thread to see who got whom's signed poofs.

What to do with all these poof balls?

Ok, we'll need an elephant, a bowling ball, and 4 pounds of wax...

wait better yet, collect all the poof balls from all the teams

get a bunch of giant tooth picks (like dinosaur tooth picks)

and make a model of human DNA

no wait, even better - hang them all from the ceiling with string, and make a scale model of the Milky Way Galaxy! each poof ball = 1 star

BTW: arnt you glad they named our galaxy after Milky Way candy bars, and not something stupid like the Good n Plenty Galaxy, or the Almond Joy Galaxy?

uhh.. I'm pretty sure the candy was named after the galaxy, could be wrong, but I'm almost positive.

I kind of like that sign a poof ball and throw it thing. That would be really interesting. then you could be pen palls or something(type-pals?). haha.

thats hilarious!

our team had a team "bonding" day one Saturday during build. and we all went to our gym and played volleyball with some balls that a kid brought in(his mom works at a local volleyball clinic thing, so we had tons)
we had two courts set up... needless to say the court next to mine got a brilliant idea... they all picked up spare volleyballs. i look over, and tell my friend "take cover" he's like "huh? OH!" no sooner was that said than the other court screams "3 2 1 dodge ball!" and volleyballs just go flying!

i like the CD pal thing honestly. I think that could be really cool. Any chance of that actually happening?

This idea may be harmful to some unattention people, but at the end of the Nationals where the finals take place, when the champion wins the competition, everyone who have their own poof balls can throw it out from the audience into the playfield to celebrate! Imagine so many poof balls flying in darkness upon the glowing bright playfield? It would be amazing!

But this idea may be harmful to people. . .

One of our balls ripped, so we hollowed it out, stuffed a t-shirt in it and duct taped the opening. We're going to run it through the shooter after our 2nd regional. Let's just say that wadded up t-shirts have a little more mass than a poof ball

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

we will probably be shooting them into the crowd at the Memorial day parade. This gives us great exposure to our community and shows our neighbors some of the things required to compete this year. Last year we drove our robot for the entire length of the parade route ( about 2 miles), using three 9 v batteries to power the OI and 3 batteries for the bot itself. It was really cool and has helped us out with community outreach programs and public awareness campaign. We will also be letting anybody drive our robot and shoot for a prize at our 4th of July celebration (about 12000 people attend), and ask for a donation.

We were thinking of removing the camera tracking and allowing people to try to shoot the ball into the 30" hoop and if they do then they get something.

You know, a little publicity thing.

Most of ours are in pretty good shape and someone mentioned donating them to the local daycare center. If not, they could be used for gym...or we'll keep them for testing in future years.

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

Here's a thought:

Have all of the students on the team sign poof-balls with "FIRST 2006: Aim High! Team xxxx" prominently written on the ball. Personalize them for the sponsors, teachers, mentors, etc. and present them at the end of the season. I think this would be a nice "thank you" gesture to the people who donated their personal time, energy and $$ to make this happen.

If your team has a large supply of poof-balls, you can sign them with your team name and individually autograph them to exchange in Atlanta. Otherwise, please donate them to pre-schools, daycare, shelters, etc. for children who aren't so fortunate.

If they are in good shape, regardless of whether or not your team has marked them, you can always donate them to a local grade school - they are always looking for new or at least gently used playground supplies.

We already made angry ball by drawing on poofs. Plus a lot of other teams already have ones.

Also, Ogre (Jeff Rodriguez)held 20 Balls, and Jeff Prague managed 18.

Everyones pitching their ideas for their teams personal stash of balls. But what about FIRST's thousands of poof balls used for all the regionals and the championship event? Even after all the dodge ball games that could be held, what will FIRST do with all those left over poof balls?! I'm sure they came up with a plan long before they finalized the game (Atleast I hope they did!), and I really want to know what it is!
(And does anyone have an official count of how many FIRST has used for this challenge?)

they should make a new dodgeball movie FIRST style. instead of ADDA regulted dodgeballs they would use the ultimate dodgeball the "POOF" ball. they could call it Dodgeball 2.0 Poof style.

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

The BEST thing that each team can do with their leftover Poof Balls is to sign them, put a message about the meaning of FIRST onto the Poof Ball with a Sharpie marker and then.....

MAIL THE POOF BALL TO YOUR SENATOR!

That way, the darned thing will sit on his/her desk until such time as a robotics curriculum is in every high school in nation (world). They'll get the message that way.

And, if that doesn't work, we'll all descend on Washington this Fall and stand on the Capitol steps and pummel every congressperson and senator with Poof balls until they get the message!

Remember, did YOU do your homework for Dean?

Re: What to do with all these poof balls?

Serious answer: donate them to underpriveledged kids.

Comical answer: If FIRST had thought ahead, they'd have made the poof balls edible so that at the end of the season they could wash them, ground them down, and have a fundraising dinner or something.

Or we could just store the poofs somewhere and hope they'll be used again in some future game. You never know.
