Buckeye 2006

Hey all. I did a quick search and saw there was no thread for the Buckeye Regional so I decided to start one. So...whos all going and who do you think will put on the best show? Team 272 will be attending and will be representing the state of Pennsylvania. This is our first time there and are looking forward to a good time.

2 days!!!!

There sorta is.

In any case, this should be in the Regional thread category.

Re: Buckeye 2006

i am sad because Buckeye, Finger Lakes, Great Lakes and Pittsburgh are all on the same weekend. so numbers are down for each regional and some good teams are missing the one the 340 is going to, the Finger Lakes Regional.

Re: Buckeye 2006

no offense, but i think buckeye and glr will be more competitive than finger lakes and pittsburgh. GLR will probably be the most competitive since teams like RUSH, HOT, Lake Orion (302) and the killer bees will be there. i think the bee's should rename themselves the fleas after they get to the Buzz robot 13.5... just for a change of pace, if you know what i mean.

Re: Buckeye 2006

sorry guys. i'm pretty delirious right now. im tired from a looooong day in the pits today and everything is fun. but i do mean what i say about the teams i listed being competitive. if your at GLR, go check out RUSH's pit. the foam ground thing is fun to walk on. it's all spongy. like. umm. i'm not gonna try to make a similie right now. it's too late.

Aside from early problems with some inspection questions (IFI Wheels almost didn't pass :ahh: ) Buckeye has been great so far. It was my first regional as a student back in 2002, and it's my first as a mentor this year. Kind of weird.

The teams here have been great. Everybody seems friendly and ready to help.

One interesting note, the Martians (494) split into two separate teams this year (70 and 494). They have two cool looking robots.

I love the way they set up the pits this year. Instead of the rookies all being in one corner, they're spread amungst the veterans. We have 70 and 93 on either side of us.

The same thing happened at UTC. It goes Newer team | older team | newer team | and so on.

aside form some minor "issues" if you will with our 'bot, i'd say Buckeye's been treating us pretty well as long as the city of Cleveland, its great out here, and we're all enjoying the time away from Pennsylvania (hey, remember youve got a friend in pennsylvania! :yikes: )

hope to see everyone around.. feel free to stop by the 272 pitts and say hi!!

93 is definately a veteran team, but the students on 70 are all "green." Any first year students joining 494 were automatically put on team 70. :) just so you know. lol.

by the way, congrats! i forget which rookie award you won, but i remember seeing thatyou had won a couple nice ones!

and thanks to the member from 25 for posting the congrats. we had a great time. it was a good regional.

Re: Buckeye 2006

OK, here we go. You all know that I try to look at the positive aspects of things as much as possible, but I feel there are a few issues that occured this weekend that NEED to be addressed. Keep in mind that this is NOT an attack or bashing of the Buckeye Regional in any way...just some pointers for the upcoming events to ensure that all competitions are as "fair and equal" to each other as possible.

Inspections
I was not there on Thursday, but I heard all of the controversy regaurding AndyMark Omniwheels and IFI Traction wheels being deemed cleats and almost being declared illegal. I saw some tape on robots that was not electrical nor providing insulation.

Field Issues
See the week 2 field issue thread for my comments: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...threadid=45219
Nothing that wasn't taken care of.

Game Rules
I understand and encourage tough defense. I saw and heard about quite a bit of unnessecary roughness, however. Taking a shot at a robot accross the field that is not moving and is not in posession of any balls or in any way attempting to score (but not disabled, just incapacitated) seems worthy of a penalty to me. While repeatedly bashing, but not causing great harm, a robot that is not moving or stuck in the corner and not attempting to score may be legal, what happened to gracious professionalism?

If the scoring system was having as many problems as it did at GLR, I questiong the validity of the results since it appeared (I could be wrong) that some refs with manual counters were not in position or not watching when robots were scoring in their areas (at times).

I even saw a ref cleaning their safety glasses and turning to talk to the camera man DURING a match.

I may be confused on this particular issue (and if it happened only once, then who cares) but we had a partner that was never enabled (for whatever reason) and remained on the near side...we came to play defense since we only had 2 operable robots and incurred 3 offsides penalties. Was this correct since that partner was never disabled, tipped, or e-stopped (at least I don't think it was...I didn't coach that match)?

Finally (again if it happened only once, who cares), here's the situation. The robots were set, the field was set, and we had just finished introductions, but had not begun the countdown or even the pre countdown. Our human player stepped around our coach, stepping outside of the alliance station box, to talk to our partner about staying in the alliance station box. In doing so, the ref threw a penalty. Our coach (I know he's not supposed to talk to the refs, but it was right there and in the moment) asked if that was a penalty even though we hadn't started yet and the ref didn't really answer. Is this correct??

Practice Field
All I'm going to say is that in this year's game, a piece of carpet is NOT an adequate practice FIELD. One upper goal (with light) and one lower goal MINIMUM would be nice - is it this way at other regionals as well??

Kev

P.S. I fully expect criticism and comments like this about the Wisconsin Regional so we can learn and improve.

hi im bryan bassett from team 964 the elite technobots, the smallest team out there with only 5 students. Before semifinals we were ranked 16 at the buckeye i dont know if that matters, but anyways, is there anywere i could get footage of the buckeye regional

oh also team 964 would like to thank team 963 for being great allies when teamed up.

Re: Buckeye 2006

Now that the bad is out of the way, here's the good!

I loved the pit setup with the mixing of new and old. The pits were managed very well too.

The queuers did a phenomenal job keeping everyone on pace and getting everyone ready for the matches.

The social was a lot of fun (at the Great Lakes Science Center) and I know my teams enjoyed it.

The announcers kept the crowd energetic and enthusiastic during the delays.

Something funny I noticed was that TWICE in a match, when the head ref threw a flag, someone's little guy ran to it, picked it up, and gave it back to him.

Congratulations to Flo from 461 for his WFA - it was very much deserved.

Congrats as well to all of the finalists and winners (494, can you rethink coming to Milwaukee???? We're scared of you!!!), and especially 461 for Engineering Inspiration, 48 for Chairman's, 1747 for blinding everyone..er..I mean Rookie Inspiration (I love the shirts!), and 1714 for Rookie All-Star (I know, I'm affiliated, but I can still congratulate them since I'm not ACTUALLY part of their team).

I would like to thank team 272 and 174. You guys were the reason we were able to win. I would like to congratulate 461. Finalist, EI and the Woodie Flowers award is quite a weekend. Congrats to team 48 on the Chairman's Award. Great finals match as well. 1018 you scared me to death. You guys were able to play offense and defense which was very rare for the teams. Thanks again to 272 and 174 though.
